Thread Starter | Looking for the perfect drum overheads, opinions?
So, the time has come and I'm building a drum-specific studio into my house. My main drum room is 13x9 which opens into a larger hardwood room for reverb, so i can get either a dry or more open sound. I've been racking my brain over which overheads to purchase. I'd like a stereo pair of large body condensers and a pair of ribbons, and I'd like to spend less than $1000 per pair. I have been considering the AKG c214 (as a cheaper alternative to 414's) and the Oktava MK-012 Suggestions? Anyone have audio samples? Thanks! |

I've used MK012s as overheads a few times. I've been happy with them, and they are certainly a great value. It's a very bright mic. I wouldn't say it's harsh... it's bright in a pleasing way, but it is very bright. I like to have a darker room mic (like a ribbon) that I can blend with them when I use them.

If you definitely want LDC's 214's are a good call; they're supposed to be just the card capsule of a 414 (I swear a 414 on cardioid sounds better....), but for the price you can't beat 'em. C3000's are also very good (still made in Austria), pretty good for OH's I've found.
