Thread Starter | Classsical guitar recording, any comments?
Hello everybody! Can I ask for your opinion about my first classical guitar recording?. I have my opinion, but want listen what people say. Tracks are just normalized, no effects. Thank you in advance!!! |

B sounds brighter (it has actually much more high end) and the stereo is unreal. A sound more natural. B can be preferred for its more demonstrative sound. But for listening to the music, I would much preferred A. B can be good for film music. Edit: Just permute A and B above, and you get what I think. |

You sure you don't have those backwards? A is the more upfront/bright sounding one to me by a lot. I do prefer A though as well. I can here the decay of notes quite a bit more which makes B sound a little muffled by comparison. I'm not sure if this is two different sets of mics, or just simply recorded from different distances. If it's just distance, ideally I would probably prefer something in between. Brian

My mistake ! But I maintain that I prefer B. I hear a guitar in front of me. Yes the sound may be felt a bit muffled, especially when compared to A, but it's warm. I prefer this to A where I am in an unreal space. |

Thank you didier! very interesting. Between A and B I have the same dilemma. For me, one is crisp and clear but as didier say maybe has an unreal stereo image. The other is more focused (maybe more real) but darker sound. And you are right Brian, is two different sets (position) of mics but at the same distance. Maybe something in between will be better. I'll try again tomorow.... Anyway, Didier and Brian, let me ask you something (for your wide experience) -For Cd purposes do you think it is a decent recording?....or far from decent? thank you very much for your comments!!! I think that the quality is OK for a CD but I am not a professional. It could be better in a nice hall but you might add digital reverberation. (I cannot attach your B take that I have processed, I cannot use any emoticon, and the edition buttons do not work: it is strange...) |

Many Thanks Didier! Here is a new take. I think is something in between, what is your opinion?, it sounds better?. Would be very nice if you can process the one you like most for me? Thank you! Roger. |

I'm also not a professional audio engineer, so I really can't say for certain if it's CD quality. I do have over 100 commercial CDs of classical guitar and I can say I have heard worse than any of the takes you've posted, if that's any measure at all. Strangely, I like C less than B. It seems some of the attack is gone even though it does sound closer. I guess ideally, I would like something similar to A but with the upfront/brightness taken down a notch or two. Perhaps EQ? This is all, of course, a matter of taste. If you plan on printing your recording to CD for sale, I would definitely take Didier's advice and find a space with a good acoustic such as a local church. This will do more for the recorded sound than anything else, especially since there doesn't seem to be any major problems with your recording equipment (i.e. noise, lack of detail, etc...). Good luck! Brian M.

C is not bad but I also prefer B. Adding reverb to B or not shall be your aesthetic choice. I cannot yet attach any file to my post. I uploaded B + some aether reverb here: rogerB-1_rev.wav |
