Mic suggestions for my voice - audio clip sample included

Hi,

I am looking for advise from the experienced engineers/ producers on this forum with regard to my next mic purchase...

Details: The mic will be primarlly for recording my own vocals for my next album. I have included a link to a sample recording of my voice, my voice can sing quite comfortably over three octaves and I am looking for a mic that will capture this. Most of the recordings will be close miced and intimate, surrounded by organic acoustic instruments (I think). The sample recording is an old song recorded years ago on a 4 track so forgive the production but it gives a true representation of the vocal range of my voice, all the voices u hear were performed by myself...

SoundClick artist: hally - page with MP3 music downloads

Currently the best mics ( or my most favorite) I own are an AKG C414 LTD and a Shure SM7b

My better preamps include focusrite isa 430 mkii, jomeek twin q, 2 x golden age preamps.

My budget is around €1000 and of course if more suitable cheaper mics come to mind feel free to mention them. Also if any preamp that u think would be just perfect for my voice don't hesitate to mention it...

It is impossible for me to test gear before I buy as I order my stuff from the UK or the USA so i need to rely on reviews, forums etc for advise

Regards
hally

AT4050 would be my choice, simply because it seems to work on so many voices. I recently added one to my collection and like it on my voice which also has a fairly wide range in pitch and tone.

Having said that when I put it up against my SM7b I wouldn't say either was better, they both tend to give my voice some nice body, since you already have one of those, why not just use that? Is it not working for you for some reason?

I would consider a ribbon mic also. For example Royer R-121 could be nice in that price range. Works also heavenly on acoustic guitar...and is versatile mic (different sound on the other side).

But, if you choose ribbon, check that your preamp has enough gain...

Thanks for the responces -
the SM7b is just not doing it for me, there is something lacking, I perfer the c414 over the SM7b and the 414 is not quite hitting the money either...It is very possible that the preamps that I have at my desposal are a factor in this...

The Royer R-121 would be lovely but are €200 - €300 over what I have to spend. Can u think of any other ribbons a bit cheaper or even alot cheaper...

Any experience with the Oktava ML52-02?

thanks

I'd say get a JZ Bh-2. It'll sound better than what the AKG and Sm7b are offering you. I sold my sm7 and I don't regret it, and I also used the akg many times, but I couldn't sing without my Bh-2. That's exactly in the 1000 range. This will pair extremely well with the GAP pre.
