BeesNeez Jade, Phelicity & Tribute 1 tests with my Mic Pre's

Greetings Slutz.

For anyone interested here is a little shootout I did today in about 30 minutes - really quick.

The Mics...
BeesNeez Jade, Phelicity & Tribute 1.

The Pre's...
Neve 283 (with vintage trannies), Trimax Valve Pre & Siemens V72.

All Mics & Pre's went thru my Retro 176 Comp because I always track vocals thru a Comp.

My thoughts or what I hear from these clips:-

T1 - that thing is huge! I mean it just sounds enormous in the low mids compared to the other two. It sounds like a hummer with off road tyres. The other two sound like sporty sedans. Some people like big off roaders, others like sedans. This mic to me however definately sounds like the big 4wd in the group. Obviously depends on the source . It may be too much with some things whilst on other things, especially for "making bigger" a smaller sounding source, it may be just perfect.

Phelicity - to my mind this one has pop vocals written all over it. I particularly hear female vocal pop queen sound and I also hear a sound reminisenct of 80's top forty. Has a C12 flavour to it.

Jade - this sounds more naked than the other two. the vocals sounded more raw and exposed. I hear screaming make rock vocals all over this one. Especially that raspy tenor voice that unleashes and yells at the high points in songs.I also hear a slight u87 flavour to it.

As for the pres- that trimax is the fullest sounding to me. Fullest isnt always the best on every source but in my mind it does sound "fuller". Guess those are the valves doing their stuff. Again, with the right source, coupled with the T1 these two could be the definitive chain! On other sources the others might shine more. The top end on the Phelicity is much more "at you". Again this is what gives me the C12 flavour I hear in my head.

Thanks for posting.

Thumbs up

nice to see not popular, strange esoteric gear...
the files..
i like:
Trimax Jade.
Trimax T1
Trimax phelicity

T1 its the darkest... not life changing experience. maybe for kick or bass would be nice.
phelicity sounds good, but has too much high end and low end.
the Jade its between both, not too bright, not to dark, but also not impressive.

phelicity sounds good, a bit too much up front, like too much compressed/processed, but if i had to choose only one, that would be,

What converters were used?
what cables?

Canare cables mostly.
SSL MadiExtreme with SSL Alpha Link converters.
Running at 24 Bit 96K.

When I sang I was up close to each mic (maybe 2 or 3 inches away) except for the room loud passages where I was about a foot away.
Remember they all went thru the Retro 176 so there will be some character from that.

The T1 is a U47 clone.
The Phelicity has similarities to a C12 and a 251. (as you said)
Jade is a little M49 'ish.
(according to BeesNeez).

The Trimax is my new 'go-to' vocal mic pre - love it.

I'm thinking the Phelicity will be lovely on Acc Gtrs and Piano.
I mainly had the Neve built to track my grand piano (4 Ch's for 4 mics).
Do you guys reckon the V72 would make a nice Elec Gtr Amp Mic Pre with a ribbon etc?

Phelicy sounded great through the neve, and the trimax. I didnt like it through the v72

T1 sounded best to me through the neve
Jade sounded best on the trimax.

That trimax is a beast! Ive never heard of them before though. Have you any more information?

I really like the phelicity. It had a really nice sound to it i was not expecting.

I have an arabella comming. Ive been a little edgy wondering if its what i am chasing after. Im hoping this is the one!

Yeah thanks Doc.
I love the Arabella - it was my first BeesNeez mic and is what contributed to my love of Ben's work - I'm sure you will be happy.
For more info on the Trimax gear give Rob Squire a call or pm myles = he frequents the Aust / NZ GS forum.

I will try the V72 with gtr cabs and a ribbon mic Deuce and will report back - cheers.

All the mics are all nice in their own ways, with my favorite being the Trimax with the T1 - super smooth with a crisp present feel.

That Trimax is special - what a fantastic preamp!

Great shootout Angus. I only had a chance to listen to the Neve files. I liked the Jade and T1 the best on this particular solo performance on this particular day. I would feel the need boost the highs a hair on the T1 but it's fundamental sound is nice.

I've got a recording I did last week with the Phelicity and the Jade.
It's a bit unique - Aboriginal Didge with Native Flute and Traditional vocals.
If you guys are interested in hearing that let me know.

The Didge was tracked with the Phelicity thru the V72.
The Native Flute and Vocals were done thru the Jade and the Trimax.
All tracked thru the Retro 176 though as I always track with a Comp.
I would put up about 30 seconds of a few tracks.
Yes, would love to hear it

Jeremy Donovan clips

OK - I gave Jeremy a call and he was cool with me posting some short clips here.
Jeremy Donovan - Aboriginal Didgeridoo Player and Artist
I decided to put up high quality mp3's - hope that's ok?

Most of the sounds on these recordings are made with the Didge recorded with the Phelicity and the V72.

Vocals and Native Flute were the Jade with the Trimax.

The Bull Roarer (spinning sound) was recorded with an MS pair - Phelicity as Fig 8 and Ross Giles modded Mann M11 as Cardoid - Pres were Neve 283.

2 of the tracks have some sampled drums in them.

All Inst & vocals were tracked thru the Retro 176 except the Bull Roarer. (and the samples of course).

Very little compression and EQ were done in the mix.

I never EQ while tracking either - not even HPF.
None of my Pre's have any EQ or filters on them - I believe in tracking everything 'full range' and leave it to the mix to EQ and HPF etc.

I do like to compress a bit in tracking though especially as the Retro 176 is such a great box.

Those Jeremy Donovan samples. WXPN is a radio station in Phillidelphia that still plays what they want. They are funded by donations from the public. Echoes is the show when they play music to just zone out to. It used to come on late at night when I was driving home from the studio and was a perfect defrag from mixing/tracking the same songs all night. I have Jade # 14 so I always try to check out how things are going for fellow bees users. Sounds great.
