Perhaps one thing to consider is that the API used in the first test may not have done justice to higher end mics and made their advantages less pronounced. That said, I personally find the Horch more rich and euphonic on male voices than the 47-type mikes. A subjective judgement, for sure, but at that level, it's all a matter of aesthetic preference really.

I hate to point out that the basket on the 47 is not a real Neumann basket. I wonder what kind of capsule is in it. Maybe not the best example of a U47 to use for the test.

Ok I need to know... Why does everyone say that Manley Gold is a bright sounding microphone? To my ears it really lacks sparkle and air. When i tested it I had the same experience. Can anyone explain to me why i hear something, and read something completely different?

Thanks!!

I think the problem is, you can't "listen" to something by reading a description, you listen to something by using your ears, and more people need to do that! What you hear is more important than what you read on here

Its mids are less present when compared to other mics like the Neumann M149 and the Rode Classic II in this test.

Please please read before you reply. It will safe us all a lot of time.

What i say is - When people explain the sound of the Manley Gold, it is very different from my experience with the microphone. I know that explaining sound i difficult, but to me it is more dark than bright sounding.

But to me it is a difficult sound to work with for most vocals. How come it is so popular? Do you boost high mids on all recordings, or how do you compensate for it?

As the Manley site explains, the Gold is bright on the very top, above 12k, like a C12. It is unhyped in the lower treble around 5-10k, where a lot of other mics are pushed, and/or rough, and that most people would describe as bright if accentuated. It's all in what you mean by the word "bright". The Reference Cardioid is pushed in that area and would be normally termed bright in comparison to the Gold. It's further confused by the fact that a lot of people call 5k upper mids, which I find misleading.

JZ Microphones

Hi,

if someone is interested in beautiful high-end equipment, I recommend JZ Microphones. I had my BH-1 fixed absolutely free of charge even though I first tried to fix it all by my self after accidentally dropping it. I sent an email to the firm with a description of the problem with some pic's and after ten minutes I got the reply from the company that they would fix it for free if i could cover shipment costs back and forth.

So if u are interested in Great mic's and top support, take a look at JZ mic's. Promise u wont regret it!

Greetings from Zürich

Joel
