On Kel's voice, I preferred 4 followed by 2 as a second choice.

Ok - some good guesses there.
All will be revelaed soon.

All who were in the control room on the day preferred Mic's 1 and 4 on Kel's voice and we ended up choosing Mic 1 because of it's warmth.
The big question is - which mic is Mic 1?

My Guess:

James
Wunder
Beezneez
U87

I think I'm fairly happy with that guess upon listening to the first set up clips.

Thanks for doing this, this was way fun.

You are undoubtedly a better expert in mics than in combinatorial analysis. There are not 16 but 24 possibles for associating 4 takes to 4 mics.

But there are only 16 different associations of a cap choosen among 4 different ones and a transformer choosen among 4 different ones for building a mic.

Cheers.

hahah, you guys have way too much time on your hands!!!

next you'll be discussing Amplification factor v Output Impedance v Mutual conductance ratios in tubes.

(ps; when you do, let me know your findings)

You must be happy he didn't use 10 mic's. The way to do the math is: if you have 4 items in any possible combination the math is 4!, 4x3x2x1 possibilities. For 10: 10! = 3628800

Yep you got it right mate.
Thanks everyone for having a go.
We were all surprised by the U87 and chose to use that mic on the day for Kel's vocal.
The other mic we liked was the T1 (Mic 4).
But of course all 4 mics sound good.
Thanks for participating in my little shoot out.

........

Surprised at the u87. I thought certainly it was number 2. I'm jazzed and not surprised, that the James is number 3. Mine will arrive next week. I have wanted a dark mic. Seems to be just the thing.

Thanks for the test!

I listened to everyones files. Kel was by far the best to do the shoot out on.

i think the 87 was a clear winner in this case. It just fitted his voice. If you listen to how the word 'sand' comes across the 87 compared to the other mics it clealy shows why.

i guess this has been establised already.

Just goes to show the level that all these mics are on. You could use all of them and me stoked with every single one. They all have their own qualities.

Consider that the James still sounded good and also 1/2 the cost of a vintage U87.

Wow quite interesting outcome...

Well now I am thinking..."man I wish I could afford a tribute", and while I tried them a few times in other studios, maybe it is time to stop talking my self out of it and buy my own U87 and just be done with it.

Very interesting! 87s do vary and you'd want to try before you buy IME. I actually prefer my Peluso VTB with upgraded coupling caps and wiring to the U87s I've compared it to, including a very nice early seventies one, a little more naturally detailed. Boy, surprised I didn't like the CM7 better. Which version capsule? Figured the James as I've heard clips of it before. It does what it does well. The T1 is definitely interesting. Thanks for the opportunity and the good clean fun.

what's good to hear is that the james is not a sibiliant mic (e.g. compared to the wunder) i already knew that from fromer shootouts...

So the James is 800 bucks compared to a 1600 dollar U87??tutt That I doubt.

How much have you guys seen U87s go for used? I ain't talking the AI either.

I thought the james held its own! ( i own one aswell). If id had all those microphones to choose from i would be more than happy with any. They all sound wonderful and are peices of art. The 87 just worked better in this case.

I wonder what the james would sound like with the transformer from the t1?

Like an AM Radio!!!

The tube in the James has a high plate impedance meaning that it needs to be paired with a transformer that has a high windings ratio ie 10.5:1 where the tribute's plate impedance is much lower.

cheers

Yep that's what I keep coming back to as missing in my collection...probably pick up a new one his year. I pretty much don't buy vintage, I just don't trust it. Never know if you are getting a golden one or a piece or crap.

Well I did luck out with my KM-84's...they look beat, no badges, but they sound amazing.
