I'll take a gander that they are:

1. CM7 - very nice, a bit Hi Fi.
2. 87 - thinner and grittier.
3. James - midrangey, a bit smoothed over and two dimensional comparatively.
4. T1 - in the direction of the James from #1, but more transparent, with more depth than the James.

YOU picked the one YOU liked. I picked 1, with 4 just behind it.

Thanks for the opportunity to hear them. I await the revelation.

here an "optimization" of piedpipers guess

1 CM7
2 U87
3 T1
4 James

i thought 3 was more transparent and 4 a bit warmer...
only 2 i didn“t like so much...

nice test!

You need to use the process of elimination, all it means is that neither of them got the same one right!!!!

2 people guessing, 4 possibles, 4 choices. 4 x 4 = 16 possibles x 2 = 32 possibles. between them they have chosen 3 from 32.

Can you see now?

cheers.

Of course, it's just simple combinatorics. Why didn't I see that before?
In that case, I would like to change my guess to: They were all recorded at the same time.

That would be my second guess as I'm totally guessing about the T1 and CM7. Especially given that I got 2 right before, those two would be the interchangeable ones for me.

I leave for India on Sun night for 2 weeks.
So I will post the results then (before I leave).
I'm guessing you all don't want to wait 3 weeks to find out the answers.

As I do the math combinations with the three guesses we have and the number we've been told are correct in each guess, the only possible lineups that could be true are

1. U87
2. Wunder
3. James
4. T1

or

1. Wunder
2. u87
3. T1
4. James

There are no other combinations that can be correct given the hints, but not enough hints are given to be absolutely certain.

And thus, the ears. My guess (having only heard in person a Wunder from this group):

1. Wunder
2. U87
3. T1
4. James

I don't have experience with most of these mics, so I'm just guessing really. But here goes:

1- Wunder Sounds beautiful. large, broad.

2- 87? Least favorite by far

3- James (I hope its True! both because I liked it best and because I've one coming soon. I love that its darker. Sounds more natural to me. Right up my alley.)

4- T1 Sounds beautiful. large, broad.

Those were my guesses as well, but evidently only two were correct.

oops.

well, like you, I was guessing between the Wunder and T1, so I'll swap those choices.

no idea what is what. i like 1 and 4. 1 is bone-dry. would probably depend on the context which one to use. 3 sounds quite ok too. 2 is def to shrill for my taste.

Ok, I'll play...why not.

I am pretty sure of:

1. CM7
2. U87 (seems the most obvious to me)

For 3 and 4 I keep flip flopping depending on the source, but I like them both...I think I like 4 the best so..

3. James
4. TI (although I hope its the James, because that one I can afford).

I know others picked this line up too, but it is what I hear.

Over all this shoot out has told me 3 things:

One: If you could not make a great recording with ANY of these mics, its not the mic's fault, none of them sucked. Its like a wine tasting with $1000 bottles of wine, they are all gonna be great, but you might like one better, while you best friend likes another.
Two: I can save my money and stop worrying about getting a CM7
Three: Ben's mics and company really hold their own. Really makin' me rethink my Peluso 2247
