Unidyne 545SD vs. SM57 Clips Inside.

Hey, just picked up a Unidyne III 545SD off Craiglist for 40 bucks!

So I wanted to try some comparisons. Here's a reamped track through a 6505+ on the Rhythm Channel. The Unidyne's output is very low compared to the 57. Anyone else have this issue? Might just be the mic, but it still sounds good. A lot less lows from the mic, but a nice mild boost sounds great. No mud whatsoever! I hope you enjoy.

hmmmm .. I have a couple of the 545SD's that I bought new in the 70's still in VG shape .. I use them interchangably with 57's... there may be some difs but they should, for all intents and purposes, be very much like a 57

Would anyone here say the 545sd is decent for vocals? I can grab one here for a decent price but would only use it for vocals...

thanks!

Yep.

You can also upgrade the transformer, à la the well-known '57/58 mod treatment.

(Unless you really need it, I'd pull that on/off switch out of the circuit, too.)

And the standard Shure '57 foam windscreen will fit right on it, if you like. (But for recording, I'd use one of those round mesh pop-filters instead.)

Just listened to this. Less mud with the Unidyne, yeah. But with that comes less sound. Personally I would rather have more sound and subtract, than have to add stuff that isn't there

I've got a Unidyne 545SD and we (my band and I) recently started to rehearse with in ears.
I use the unidyne on the rhythm guitar's amp and tonight I realized that that mic seems to be omni, it picks up as much drum as it picks up the amp.
On my amp, I've got an sm57 and I almost can't hear the drum throught it, both amp are placed side by side.

Was there any omni version of the unidyne or is mine broken or maybe modified?

False alert, I tested it today and it's clearly cardiod, the guitarist's amp volume was just too quiet compared to my amp and to the drum...
