What a very interesting test!
I think the best one is 1, and the worst is 6 (because of noise).
Send me the key, please

Key please and thank you! -

And, no offense to the OP, but I hear a pretty nasty sound in all of these samples. A metallic, ringing decay. Is this an .mp3 artifact ? Anyone else hear this? Right after the attack.

I am monitoring directly from the computer to Sony MDR-7506.

OK, the .WAV files sound much better. I do still hear an occasional "shh-shh" across all the tracks, almost like something in the room is vibrating, or clothing noise...

The difference in noise floor of 6 compared to others is worth noting....

thanks for a great shoot-out!

I guess that the difference that you hear between mp3 and wav comes from that your are listening mp3 in streaming and the wav directly from your computer. If you would download the mp3 for listening to it after decoding in the same conditions like the original wav, you might realize that the difference between them is not audible: a null test gives this difference at about -90 dB RMS, -60 dBFS peak for track 1.

The noise of the dampers on the strings when the pedal is put on/off.

This test is still alive. I send the key on request. Any comment about how you rank these takes much appreciated.

I like number 2 less self noise, a little bit dark but i like that sound and the bass of this mic could be the oktava, number 4 is great too followed by number 3, number 5 is too bright for my taste maybe the josephson, and number 1 and 6 would be my last choice.

May I have the key please?

Order of preference would be 2, 3, 4, 6, 5 and 1 with the latter two having some mid range properties I didn't enjoy - it seemed like some of the denser voicings got muddied by them.

Fantastic piano playing, by the way! Can I have the key please?

You have been gathering information for a hella long time bro. As everyone said this is a cool test. Since I just read all the responses after my listening, it's looking like most people chose 3 their first or second choice, (or noted their preference for the high end sparkle). I agree the 3 is my top choice, I think that's the one for this specific application. Segue...

So these notes may not make perfect sense to anyone that's not me, but I'm happy to give my full feedback.

I listened to the Mp3 first, and got the same artifact from the embedded player as noted by others. But took these notes:

1. Full and warm sounding, artifacts are distraction
2. Ringing, a little flat sounding?
3. clean, natural sounding, artifacts are a distraction
4. tinny artifacts are a distraction
5. nice, but matter of fact, detached?
6. still clean but lacking, a little flat sounding

I then realized my error and downloaded the Wavs, and rerandomized and got this:

1. Very sharp, present, lacks a little low end oomph
2. Dull, good mids, sits up high, tiny bit rounder bottom
3. Great blend, very smooth, regal almost
4. Flat, hyped top maybe, sounds distant somehow
5. Very nice, well supported, smooth, good blend, nice verbs
6. Thin, sounds like the microphone was bored

So I think my final vote is
3 1 5 2 6 4

Honestly, between the first 4 it's really a distinction of taste and function I think. 3 has this "glow" which sounds really lush on just piano, but I think 1 might jump to the top of my list if the piano were part of an ensemble. (Chopin with rock drums, emo vocals and screaming metal guitar? My heart is pounding ) You don't have to send me the answer key, you could just label the mics and put them in the mail . But no really, I'm gonna need that answer key, lol. Thanks for this, these shoot outs aren't always such good ear training.

Hey there,
I registered here only to finally learn from which microphones those files are ...
The reason I found this: In two weeks I got my first piano recording job and I was thinking wheather I should buy a Rode NT5 or an Audio-Technica 4041 (instead of my old Samson CO2). So I hope you still send the keys and help me to learn about the differences.
Rating: I think every recording had its charme, hard to decide. Maybe the numbers 3 and 1 felt best (for my ears).
And thanks for this great shoot out.
