Beesneez James

In late January I ordered a Beesneez James. It arrived yesterday. I have to say, I am presently fairly impressed.

I'd be interested in your thoughts on the vocal quality in the following song. I recorded it into a Great River MP-2NV -> 1176 -> Fireface and put a little UAD Fairchild on it in the mix.

It's a bit of a cheesy love song I wrote for a wedding. But I think it showcases the mic/vocal fairly well with acoustic guitar going into a slightly more dense mix.

Sorry about the abrupt start and stop...

I think the song is quite good, maybe I just am a sucker for "cheesy love songs". The vocal is certainly well detailed and easy to hear in the mix. Just curious, what other mics could you have chosen to use for vocals on this track? I hope you are happy with your James, personally, I received my Jade about 2 weeks ago. I like it very much.

I have quite a few others: AT4047, Gefell UM70, OctavaMod 219, Rode K2, Pearlman TM-1... And I've tried a slew of others - this one seems to hit the sweet spot for my voice.... in this song.... on this day.... etc....

Did you use James on the acoustic guitar as well? The vocals sound really good!

I was thinking to buy Jade, but maybe its worth to spend a 100 $ extra for the James mic?

Dang... that's a nice song. The James really works for your vocals.

And, Ben's a great guy, judging at least from his generosity on the More Free Stuff thread. Can't wait until he's got his mods and parts pages live on his website! I'm holding off on some stuff until I see what he's got to offer.

I used a Chameleon Labs TS-1 on the guitar 6 inches out or so, pointing slightly in toward the body at the 12th fret. An amazing combo is that, plus the AT4047 about a foot out from the lower bout on the body -- pan hard left/right and it sounds pretty killer... But in a mix where more instruments come in, I sometimes keep only one acoustic mic.

Not sure what to tell you about the Jade vs. James - I've heard it's a little more neutral, but I'm not certain that's what I heard in Ben's shootouts....

Plus 2.

Your voice reminds me of Bernard Fanning of Powderfinger- one of my favourite vocalists. Your vocals sound fantastic- nice air but the lows very present/detailed. Your vocals in this so remind me of Fannings recent solo album- congrats on your voice and mike -oh and the song isn't half bad either

Thanks for all the kind words and the reassurance - the more I use the James the more I like it. I just overdubbed a tune last night that I was having a hard time getting a vocal to sit in, and the James totally did the trick...

I have found the same thing to be true with my Jade. I recorded a friend of mine who doesn't always sit nicely in the tracks, but the first time I had him sing into the Jade, it was like it was meant to be there.

Thanks for posting the song.

I was on the fence about getting the "James" but your song reassured me
that I'm making the right choice.

Great vocals and song BTW.

James Mic

Hey I have a small bedroom and we have been working on some pre production stuff in our spare time and we used a James Mic on the vocals, GAP PRE73 on the bass with the JLM modded output transformer, Beyer MC930 on acoustic ( Taylor 814). Its pretty rough as it is a first take to get some levels and stuff then we had to drop it all and we will get back it some time later but it will give you some idea on the James mic. Sung 3-4 inches away using Neve 33415 preamp through a Daking FET II compressor with about 3 db of gain on peaks. ITB reverb on vocal and a little PSP Old Timer on the 72 JAzz bass.
The Vocal is mixed higher so you can hear the James at work.
Cheers

Really nice man. Love your voice, you are the only judge that matters on the mic, if it felt and sounded right to you then it is. Beautiful track. I hope all is well with Ben and his family.
