And guess what?
The midi timing is as just as bad as thru USB-MIDI interfaces, or direct midi over USB. (I tested it on Motif-ES and Korg TR-rack.)
tested with miditest? please upload results.
could be your RS-232 interface. (any pci/pcie card closer to the cpu gives better results, find a mobo with included rs-232 or other brand/model.)
could be the synths.
could be your PC PSU, not giving clean DC., try a low electric noise & low ripple PSU like Cooler Master Silent Pro M700, or the Thermaltake EVO or the newer TR2.
also wont hurt an AC power cleaner/conditioner/regulator with shielded power cables.
With and without power conditioner and Voltage Regulator

Akai MPC 1000 has 1-2 msec of timing inconsistency.

MidiLink results just in from the manufacturer
these results kick USB's ass for speed, check out the minimum time, 0.00ms!! with only the odd bum message at over 2ms
99.9% of the bytes get out in less than 1ms. . this is looking tight! (compared to USB)

In theory Yes. Data packets are moved parallel in groups, as opposed to serial as USB, data moves one bit after the other.

I don't know.. I don't think that for such a simple issue we have to pay attention to such small details.
what's the next thing you gonna tell me? to get my own electric power plant for my studio?

you guessed right... LOL
a better PSU wont hurt the PC.

my pc performace increases 10%, measured with passmark software.

my i7 920 can make 4000KB/s @ 2.8ghz, with winrar benchmark test.

returning to midi:
1minute = 60secs
1second = 1000ms.
60secs = 60.000ms

60000ms / 120bpm = 500ms per beat.
250ms per 1/2
125ms - 1/4 note
62.5ms - 1/8 note
31.25ms - 1/16 note
15,625ms - 1/32 note
7,8125ms - 1/64 note

2ms timing error in the synth
+ 2ms error in the Midi interface
its annoing.

Dude......what are you smoking ????? Your math is way off here.
It should be 500ms per 1/4 note @ 120 bpm.
BPM is "beats Per Minute" not "Beats Per Second".

lol

Anyhoo,
I was enjoying reading this thread up till now. I wonder how you would go about testing the Terrasoniq Midi ONE as it has only 1 midi connector which can be used as either input or output.....so would be kinda hard to connect the input to the output as required by the MidiTest utility.

Exclamation Attention, Attention!!

I think I found the problem.
since I am moving to mac, I tried in Logic (on MAC) to send 16 midi channels to Fantom-G, and all MIDI tracks are perfectly on time!! Tried it from logic to Korg Tr-rack, also, all tracks perfectly in time!!
At first I couldn't believe this, so i stacked even more notes, and they were all on time, just like in hardware.
I guess this is Windows 7 issue.
even though I wasted some money buying different midi interfaces suggested by various members of this forum, I'm glad that the midi timing horror is over for me )))

those results you get from the various audio tests like latency etc, doesn't mean much. they are perhaps useless after all.

It doesn't monitor the notes and data timing or jitter going out to multiple channels.

if those testers would send 5 notes per channel across atleast 8 midi channels and would show how the timing varies, than it would be meaningful.

even in windows 7 if you send one or two midi channels out to hardware the latency and jitter won't be noticeable. but if you have a few notes at the same time at alot (like 6+ midi channels), that you can clearly hear the different notes varying in time.

If you are on win7: IT DOESN'T MATTER WHAT HARDWARE YOU USE, the sloppy midi out timing when alot of notes are going out at the same time is WINDOWS 7's problem NOT midi hardware!

You can try to get you midi timing even tighter if you are on MAC or XP, but those tiny milliseconds differences will not be noticeable to most people

Some more discoveries people made here: (but still no solutions to windows 7 extremely sloppy midi out.) http://www.velvetacidchrist.com/2010...e-a-grim-tale/

MIDI-In seems solved.

i could run MidiTest v4.12 32-Bit in MAC OSX 10.6.7 with PlayOnMac....

same RME hdsp9632, same Board, PSU, etc...
it was:
Latency: 1ms
Jitter: 0.something,
Deviation: 1ms

...about W7 sloppy Parallel Performance...
the easy way... is to have 1 interface per Midi channel...
instead of a 8x8 midi interface, 8 midi interfaces....
more expensive, yes...
expansion chasis are needed, some drivers do not support more than 3 of the same at same time.
but doable
having another PC with Midi LAN, or real midi interfaces slaved by MTC.
to use CV when possible-.
the do it all interface, DAW seems too much...

i dont understand how this latency numbers are calculated and if all the these figures in this thread r trusted or not , i dont even know on what buffer size r u testing these interfaces

Multiple MIDI Ports

First, I am sorry to invade your thread, but I have a related question. I would have posted it as a new thread, but as a newbie, I am unable to find any place to click to post a new thread, and no instructions as to where that might be. (Clicking on New Threads merely goes to the already posted new threads, and Thread Starter is not live.)

I need to be able to use more than 16 MIDI channels, which is what is available if your MIDI interface has only one port. The need for this is not because I want to connect multiple instruments, but because I am using an arranging program, Jammer Pro, which creates more than 16 channels needed in some arrangements.

I am currently using an M-Audio Fast Track Pro, but I also have a Roland Edirol PCR-300, which I am not presently using. I'm wondering if I can connect that in some way, which together with my single port Fast Track Pro will allow me to use 2 Midi In-Out ports, thus to create 32 Midi channels?

Also, if anyone can tell me how to post a new thread, that would be great. Thanks.......Don

Hi,

I don't use the MIDITest program referenced in this thread (I'm a Linux audio developer), but there is a similar program that works with the JACK Audio Connection Kit 2 to measure latency and jitter. I'd like to post some results that were sent to me about a year ago or so in order to show MIDI latency/jitter results obtained through JACK on Linux.

The first is with a Swissonic USB MIDI device. USB MIDI jitter is notoriously bad on Windows; so, given that USB 2.0 has an inherent 1 millisecond of jitter (USB frame rate), this is probably as good as it gets:

--------------------

$ jackd --sync -Xalsarawmidi -dalsa -r48000 -p256

$ jack_midi_latency_test -m 3 -s 8192 -t 5 "system:USB Device
0x170b:0x11 MIDI 1 out" "system:USB Device 0x170b:0x11 MIDI 1 in"
Reported out-port latency: 5.33-5.33 ms (256-256 frames)
Reported in-port latency: 5.33-5.33 ms (256-256 frames)
Average latency: 12.39 ms (594.69 frames)
Lowest latency: 11.85 ms (569 frames)
Highest latency: 12.94 ms (621 frames)
Peak MIDI jitter: 1.08 ms (52 frames)
Average MIDI jitter: 0.25 ms (11.46 frames)

Jitter Plot:
0.0 - 0.1 ms: 1778
0.1 - 0.2 ms: 1469
0.2 - 0.3 ms: 1693
0.3 - 0.4 ms: 1568
0.4 - 0.5 ms: 1591
0.5 - 0.6 ms: 93

Latency Plot:
11.8 - 11.9 ms: 112
11.9 - 12.0 ms: 857
12.0 - 12.1 ms: 706
12.1 - 12.2 ms: 874
12.2 - 12.3 ms: 836
12.3 - 12.4 ms: 861
12.4 - 12.5 ms: 887
12.5 - 12.6 ms: 663
12.6 - 12.7 ms: 839
12.7 - 12.8 ms: 797
12.8 - 12.9 ms: 745
12.9 - 13.0 ms: 15

Personally, I've seen MIDI jitter results for serial MIDI ports on Windows that were much worse.

Here are results for a TERRATEC EWX24/96, which, as you would expect for a PCI device, are noticeably better that the USB results:

--------------------

$ jackd --sync -Xalsarawmidi -dalsa -r48000 -p256

$ jack_midi_latency_test -m 3 -s 8192 -t 5 "system:TerraTec EWX24/96
MIDI out" "system:TerraTec EWX24/96 MIDI in"
Reported out-port latency: 5.33-5.33 ms (256-256 frames)
Reported in-port latency: 5.33-5.33 ms (256-256 frames)
Average latency: 11.06 ms (530.95 frames)
Lowest latency: 11.04 ms (530 frames)
Highest latency: 11.10 ms (533 frames)
Peak MIDI jitter: 0.06 ms (3 frames)
Average MIDI jitter: 0.00 ms (0.02 frames)

Jitter Plot:
0.0 - 0.1 ms: 8192

Latency Plot:
11.0 - 11.1 ms: 8189
11.1 - 11.2 ms: 3

Messages sent: 8192
Messages received: 8192

--------------------

I believe these results are the best I've seen thus far.

Disclaimer: I wrote the 'alsarawmidi' driver that's being used to handle MIDI input/output for JACK 2 in the above tests, and I also wrote `jack_midi_latency_test`, the program used to measure latency and jitter. Both the driver and the program are open source, so if you think that the results are incorrect, feel free to look through the source and point out the errors.

Thanks,

--
