rough comparison AT4047/SM7B and AT4033/CEMC6

this is two performances (four actually, the guitar and vocals are both double tracked/panned) of the same song using the same guitar and preamps.

the guitar is an alvarez MD90 solid rosewood and spruce dreadnaught, I think the strings are .012s, d'addario

the vocal mic went into a Universal Audio Solo 110 (different gain settings, I think the 4047 track had pretty high input gain). the guitar went into a Solo 610 with a JAN GE 5751 tube in the input stage, full input gain.

the 4047 was about 4 inches away from my mouth, the SM7 has the small windscreen on it and I was just about right up on it. the 4033 was at a 45 degree angle into the soundhole about 6 inches out kind of above the 12th fret (I call this the "gearwire" position). the Peluso CEMC6 was maybe 8 inches out pointed roughly at the soundhole. no EQ on the guitars or vocals. positions and performance probably varied a bit. I realize I probably should have used the same mic position for the guitar mics, but I was just experimenting.

mics and preamps set to "flat," no lo cuts or hi boosts. low impedence on the 110 for the SM7, and hi-z for the 4047

audio technica cables. into an Audiofire12, into cubase, 44.1 32bit. there is an effect, a master compression with the "JS Magneto" plugin. these are 320kb/s mp3s. as this is a rough test I thought this would be fine.
I can post other samples with no effects or compression if need be, as wav clips. if you want to see an idea of what these pieces can do though, give a listen. I kind of like the audio technicas on this particular track. I also think the UAs add a lot of "color", but part of that could be the compression (there was quite a bit)

here is yet a third take, this time showcasing the SM7 with bass rolloff at the preamp (along with the peluso cemc6 again on guitar). might have been some clips on the vocal track at the climax. lots of options with these U.A. preamps

no effects or compression on this take.

I like the 4047 better here. Sits better in the mix and brings out a nice syrupy lower mid resonance in your voice. The SM7 sounds a little out of place. Where were the switch settings on the SM7?

thanks! I thought the same thing... the nice resonance with the 4047. I didn't notice it until I double tracked the vocals then it really stood out, in a nice way, like the "every time" line at the front of the song. I do however like the way the SM7 sounds with bass rolloff at the preamp (the third file) better than set flat, for some reason.

in all the takes the SM7 was set to flat bass, flat presence. but in the third file there's a high-pass filter at the preamp. the preamp was also set to hi-z input in the third file, but lo-z in the 2nd file. I haven't been able to discern a clear difference, yet, between high and low impedence on vocals with the SM7

I'm still trying to figure out if the solo 110 is an ideal vocal preamp for me, (what do you think?), or if something else I don't own yet might be better (or even my sytek) but I guess that's another thread all together

I like the third take SM7 without the compression. The first two mp3's you posted where distorting quite a bit, not good for my speakers!!!
