Thanks James, now that I officially have a lunchbox and a 512c to be here tuesday, I'm stoked~!
BTW, your tune "Around The World In 30 Days" almost gave me a heart attack.
I was crankin it and my girlfriend snuck up behind me to say, let go!
If your a fan of crankin rock, do yourself a favor and check out James tune~!

Your girlfriend told you to let go?

Personally I love the LaChapell 583s, Montessi Red, MA5 and 512c the best. Again, they all sound cool and are useful.

I can't imagine how much time this must have taken. A big THANKS, you are a true philanthropist and gearslutz, Lord James!

Although I'm not in "shopping mode" for a new pre, I particularly enjoyed the Mono Gama and the LaChapelle 583... no, no, I must resist!

gama nickel on most everything, ma5 on male vox, 583s on female and acoustic, but all of them all over good. AND p1 on electric guitar!

a pity that the juggernaut didn't make it in time. i know that there's this other shootout james provided but not quite the same.
would also have been great to hear the burl!

ps: there's also this issue of different levels that makes it difficult to judge. 512 is always softer e.g.
pps: i know it's not really possible with that many pres but a splitter before the pre and say 4 pre's with the exact same performance would be awsome. performance is very often more important than the pre...

well i think it's a little hard to tell from these files if some of the 500s could compete with your favorites or not. who knows if you tried them yourself.

If I had my studio to do all over again I would start with an 11 space 500 series rack. 11 space rack filled with; LaChapell 583s, Montessi Blue, Red and P1, MA5, 512 and SH... and a seperate 1073... game over.

so true and i'm one that doesn 't care for bare tracks in examples. i like a bit of context as i don't record much acapella or bare bones speech
