the input stage of the fatso is designed to be a harmonic distortion generator; the harder you push it, the more 2d and (eventually) 3rd order harmonics pile up. this becomes even more true when you engage the tranny emulation, which lightens the sub-bass and adds even more 'life' up top.

the fatso is now my undisputed #1 bass compressor. it locks that instrument down like nobody's business, and adds all these subtle overtones that make it so clear and present in a mix. bass is such a piece of cake to mix now.

fwiw, the gp/spank combo is my favorite for this app, and i hit it hard, floating between 5-10db reduction. for synth bass and other stuff that's uberdeep, i'll slam it into the red... instant seal bass: massive, pillowy, deep, and totally out of the way.

This is why the 'after' version is brighter. It might be nice to hear an example without the extra eq, or at least one where there is only enough added to match the original high end.
