Jazz trio w/ DPA 4061s

Here's a snip of a jazz trio with 4061s on piano (using Mark Kramer's positioning), 4061 on bass (using the DPA mounting rig nearthe bridge) and Royer SF12 over the drums.

Rich,

That sample sounds great! Makes me want to dig out my 4060's and try them on the grand here.

Sad thing is, I know it's not near the quality of piano in that recording...

thx!

Thanks for the compliment! I do not recall what I owned at the time-- but I can assure you that micpres are almost the least important thing in the chain. ADC are the least important.

well,I was wondering in your experience ,what is the most important part of your chain? I thought everything contributed to the type of sound that you are getting? I'm confused their.

Microphones by far-- 85%-- micamps 10% ADC 5%. but when channel count goes up the quality of the ADC becomes more noticeable. This is all only my opinion.

I really do appreciate the complements, but with players of this caliber most of the hard work is already done-- great sound concepts; perfect musical balance. All there is to do is listen to them play in the room (very important-- stand right in front of the group) then capture what you heard. Having a concept of what a trio should sound like is necessary, along with recording instruments (the mics) that are equal to the quality of the instruments being played. I used some subtle HF LPEQ on drums and piano (a Steinway D) as well as some other tools (a gobo next to the bass to block the cymbal about 2ft away). BTW bass was definitely compressed-- you must to emulate the live sound character. And of course some Altiverb as well as very light Magix Ammunition optical compression. But all I did was capture and try to slightly enhance what the guys were doing.

Rich

PS I decided to listen to the clip again-- and IMO it needs more drums!
