Typical mic snare shoot.........

This was done quick, I figured I would post it because I love the shoot out threads. This this was done in my personal home studio.

1st- sm 57 - Neotek series 1e - apogee rosetta @ 44.1- Logic 8- Disc

2nd - Yamaha mz103 - Neotek series 1e - apogee rosetta @ 44.1- Logic 8- Disc

3rd - Senn 421 - Neotek series 1e - apogee rosetta @ 44.1- Logic 8- Disc

4th - Akg 414 - Avalon 737 - apogee rosetta @ 44.1- Logic 8- Disc

5th - senn 609 - Neotek series 1e - apogee rosetta @ 44.1- Logic 8- Disc

The snare is a pork pie little squealer all mic's were aimed at the outer rim. Sorry for the low level. TURN UP YOUR MONITORS..........

Wow, that is a tight little sounding snare! Can we see a picture of placement?

The 57 and 414 are better than the others for me. The yamaha kinda worked as well... but, it's hard to say, as I could never imagine going after that kind of snare sound myself. If you want me to be crude, I think they all sound kinda lame. But don't worry, it's not the mic or the board. Try tuning that snare!

Sounds like it's jacked way up to me, top and bottom, and the snare wires might be a bit too tight for my tastes as well.

I know there was no tuning involved this was a spur of the moment shoot. I originally came across this snare while recording a local ska band here in chicago. It worked really well for them." basically because there is nothing to it". It has a fast attack so it works well for up beat tempo music. I looked in to them, I ended up buying one from ebay for $125. I like it. I also have a vintage yamaha sd755md recording snare. It sounds big. I use this for most of my recordings. I will try to post pic's of the placement.
Thanks fossil tooth
Steve

it sounds like a mic you would use in a grindcore band. and if we were going to record grindcore i would probably pick the 103 because I think it would pop through a lot better when hit really really fast. I agree that retuning the snare would be a good idea. I believe you should do a shootout with your good snare.

Sorry for the late reply. At the time of the shoot out I was waiting for the 48v phantom power transformer for my console. The 414 requires it. It's all fixed now. I agree the 103 was my top choice.
Thanks

57 sounds best to me.. hate the snare.. 57 sounds great. 414 sounds good too but there's not a way in hell you're going to not end up gating it later.

I like the 414 best, followed by the 57.
At first I thought it may just be the volume of the 414 being a little hotter, but I still pick it #1 after lowering it's volume on playback.
The 414 gives the entire snare more dimension from top to bottom.
Although for a session, I may not want to risk a stick hit unless it was the drummers 414 (lol)

Shootouts are cool...Great job!

Sorry I doesn't want to post offence and I doesn't say that I can make it better but this snare sounds like
Something is strange there......

Ok now my Ranking here:
1. 103 sounds the best to me
2. sm57
3. 414 not that bad but mids are to much pushed back
4. 609 sounds shitty with lots of resonance
5. 421 sounds like bad mp3 on 56kp/s

414 is very nice, but usable with placement and separation from other elements?
