uad 1176LN vrs BF 76 soft compressors

Hi , so i recorded bass and drums just for the test , my girlfriend Tina helped with te vocal part , very quick , not hi fi .

settings on both plugins where the same , escept for gain , uad LN needs more db .

You'll see the settings on the picture ,i compressed more than usual, just to compare squashing , pumping , color ,dulling etc ( effects of real compressors.. you name it ) , i'll post new samples with gentle compression next time . In most of the instruments i used the same settings , medium to fast atack , fast release , 4:1 ratio and the VU showed 4 to 5 db of gain reduction . If you have the chance , try ( on drums , bass , or vocals ) this settings with the real 1176LN . purple audio version , another fet compressor , or any other hardware compressor with manual ratio , atack and release settings before listening.

each sample starts with the uneffected instrument A , then follows b , c

Reflixtinian, thanks for taking the time to post these examples !

B sounds best to me. I'm guessing B = UAD 1176 LN and C = BF 76 ?

Would anyone who has a purple audio MC77 be kind enough to post samples with the same settings ? I'm very curious to hear how the MC77 compares to the UAD 1176 LN plug-in, in terms of colour.

shure, the difference between the two software compressors is huge , i couldn't think that was posible (coming from 0011010011101) . In some situations i find one of the two better for room compression , vocals , etc , for bass , bass drum etc i dig the other . But there's only one i can't live without.

One of the compressors is easy to use , the other takes time and patience.

Remember that its more important how the instrument or vocal sounds in the mix , listening to individual instrument helps but is not so relevant.

Try with vocals first , what i like from the original hardware units is how well the vocal sits on a mix , with some exceptions, and the color of course . i know many people that use these units for color only (not compression ) .

I'll post the results latter ... keep in touch

I think the first one sounds the best..not to be cocky
The second though if was going to choose.

I have hardware compressors but if I was to use a software one the UA stuff does sound pretty good.

I thought B sounded best in all tests and now I see the results and it is not the same compressor that I like best on each track. I guess I have to learn to know what different compressors sounds best on. Not just throw the same one on every thing I want to compress.

Thank you for this test! Regards

yep, not a problem , youŽre right , sometimes our "favorite" doesnŽt sound good every time....its better not getting married with plugins bro... as they are tools.....sometimes i use waves, URS ,or sonalksis , UAD , or outboard....I havenŽt found a brand that works perfect for all..

of course youŽll hear things like "brand A makes brand B sound like a joke" ........ sounds like an automatic delivered answer from a machine or something..

that comes from dudes based on Rumors...rather than Listening
DonŽbelieve everithing you read or hear from other guys

I picked B C C.

I think the transformer emulation is what makes the difference. Their is a certain "weight" that is there in the UAD samples, that the BFD just doesn't achieve.

The drums sample isn't very useful, because C its pumping all time, the big difference come in the vocal sample... Uad sounded much more better, BF sounded lifeless...
