Liquid Channel Replica Shootout

I spent a couple of hours singing the first two lines of The Skydiggers "Penny More" through a pop filter and 8-10 inches away from my OktavaMod Mk-319 (Floating Dome) using most of the Liquid Channel replicas available (recorded into PT LE via MBOX spdif set at 24-bit, 48 khz). For reference, I also tracked a take through a Mackie Onyx1620 preamp. My good friend and lead guitarist (Todd Hunter Band - Canadian pop rock for fans of R.E.M., Coldplay, Blue Rodeo, Counting Crows, Crowded House, Barenaked Ladies, etc. - HOME) Jeff Derksen sat with me for the tracking. I apologize for other noises that made it onto some of the takes (my boiler firing up, my family walking around upstairs, Jeff taking notes, etc.). All files were converted into stereo 192kbps mp3s by iTunes. Your thoughts?

By the way, your opinions on the replica suits my voice the best would be greatly appreciated - I hope to purchase "the real thing" soon. Cheers.

Todd Hunter

LC New Age2A(STT-1).mp3
Lc NewAge1(HV-3D).mp3

LC Savillero(Helios).mp3 - has verry nice higs & lows but not nice mids,

Onyx1620 Pre-Firewire.mp3
LC Dunk(ManleySlam!).mp3

thumbsup test
tube vs. not tube = no tube a bit more detailed

difference its small for the price

i would for....assuming this is the best mic for your voice, and using non-stranded copper cable

LC Savillero(Helios).mp3 the best, but has a strange resonance arround 1khz , that could be the cable or the mic
sounds similar to johnhardyco.com M-1 with both In+Out Transformrs

1081 Hi-Imp
LC BirdD(FlamingoFATIRON).mp3 like 1081 but more alive or like 1100 but without the room !

Pultec Ovr like 1081 LowImp. but with a small tube feedback i guess

NeveVR

for a darker highs or a brighter inst./mic
(TridentMTA-A).mp3
1073

just a partial quick listen list, not a go for it list

mic makes a big difference = this is a bit relative
but anyway is a Verry Nice point of reference thumbsup

Sorry - this forum only allows 5 files per post so the rest of the 48 replica examples are posted as "Liquid Channel Replica Shootout pt.2 (then pt.3, then pt.4 etc. etc.)

Thanks
Sorry can absolutely non-concur more with you findings than humanly possible.

Issue 1: Mic used for the test

First of all it seems that he's using a MK-319 floating dome modded? And these are touted by Oktava mods as what again?

OKTAVA New Modified MK-104 (silver) with Premium Electronics GEFELL M930 CLONE
OKTAVA New Modified MK-105 (silver) with Premium Electronics NEUMANN U87 CLONE
OKTAVA New Modified MK-219 with Premium Electronics NEUMANN M149 Clone
OKTAVA New Modified MK-319 Flat Top w Premium Electronics GEFELL UM57 FET
OKTAVA New Modified MK-319 Floating Dome w Premium Electronics NEUMANN U87 CLONE

CLONES HUH? NOT even close! Hmmm. Makes me wonder, even after listening to all the Okatava samples at that website. Dude, you spent all this time to do all this, at least go rent a KORBY EQ modded U87 or a LAWSON 251 or U47 or something better huh?

Issue 2: He kept moving forward and backward causing a proximity effect on almost every single one, not as bad as when he started, but as he went along with fatigue and additonal distractions he kept moving around. The things you mentioned at certain frequencies are a result of what again? The mic, the proximity, the bacground noise, or the preamp? Just too many variables.

Then the additional issue of resinging the same piece over again how many times? Add that to the permutations of the variables in play. Hello? It would have been just as difficult to do the same playinng a simple line on an electric or acoustic guitar. But then, be advised, the frequency range and pitch of that/those instruments and a human voice (male or feamle differences there too), makes the test relative to what again? A Universal Finding and Template for for what and of what again? Yup. Just as I thought, not a goddamned thing.

So your conclusion that the Helios preamp was the goodest and niceest and prettiest and bestest was based on what variable of what permutation again of what preamp again? The Focusrite liquid emulation is a model of the Helios Green not Black. Hardly the same as using a modern day redo of the Helios Type 69 sold at Vintageking either. And then is it a rack API lunchbox type with 16v on the rails, or the rackmount stereo version with higher headroom? Hmmm, issues, issues, issues .... makes me scratch my balls and wonder ....

Issue 3: Here's a non-sequitur unbiased forum and adequate population sample of accuracy to go to for the real skinny:

FOCUSRITE has already extensive feedback from owners/users who have downloaded assets (emulations) and offered feedback. See:

FOCUSRITE LIQUID ASSETS - LIQUID CHANNEL / 4PRE MIC PRES AND USER REVIEWS:

Focusrite Audio Engineering | UK Site | Support

FOCUSRITE LIQUID ASSETS - LIQUID CHANNEL COMPRESSORS & USER REVIEWS:

Issue 4: What is Liquid technology Good For?

A lot of things. For one, for somebody who can only afford maybe one API 3124 and maybe one really good FET or Tube condenser and maybe only an ONYX 1640 or another smaller 16 channel mixer like a Spirit M12 or WZ3 and needs some different oomph for whatever reason to bring something special out in a mix. The majority of the models are very close, however there are quite a few stellar ones in the pres and the compressors on both the LC and the 4MICpre that validtaes the price of admission by any stretch of the imagination. There you have it.

It will never be a Voxbox, or VT2 or an 992EG. My recommendation to anyone is buy a couple of each if you can afford them. They are a blast, but be advised no SMUX only AES I/O at the rear. I would also strongly recommend the Focusrite 428 and 828 with the 828 converters despite the unfounded gearslutz rage against them. Huge huge bang for the buck, great converters, and excellent and fabulous on drums and acoustic instruments. I'm not really a fan of anything else in their product line. Honestly, I would personnally do a mix with API 3124s and 428s and 828s anyday that mix very well together over any other neve designed preamp with the exception of the 1272 for kick on very hard rock and 80s metal cuts for that dark huge sound. I don't care for 1073 or 1081s on vocals much as these are clearly passe now and over done, esp as there are just so many better preamps out there to select from now. Think Manley, Fearn, and LaChappell that come to mind immediately. Costs a lot, but what a lot you get for the buck. You Kidding Me? Fuggedaboudit!

Sadly the poor guy spent so much time doing this test for what end result, I am not sure, but Sexxy sweetheart, what is it you are engineering again? Porn soundtracks? Keep up the good work

I use the Liquid Channel to insert on recorded tracks as an insert via AES insert in PT.
Its nice to audition some different pre's and compressors and possibly change the sound even after it was recorded.
Try it, you might like it.

PMoshay,

My studio has just purchased the Liquid Channel, and I want to connect it to the Digi 003 we have. Which converter would you recommend me to use in order to convert the AES output of the LC to the Spdif input of the 003?

Any help will be much appreciated!

Here you go
Mercenary Audio - AES/EBU (XLRF) - SPDIF (RCA) Cable
if you need a longer run use this
Mercenary Audio - Neutrik NADITBNC-FX Female XLR AES/EBU to BNC SPDIF Transformer

a cable could damage your equipment.
you need a balun with -10dB pad.

there are:
canare bcj-xj-a10tra
etslan.com pa-813
drawmer m-clock & m-clock plus

i have all 3... all i can say is the etslan pa-813 with bnc-m--to--rca-m adapter is amazing.
the canare sounds harsh, but gets the job done.
the drawmer is temperamental, some inputs sound sweet, some sound darker.
