| Gearslutz.com admin | Need fancy pants scanner also good fo old negatives & slides too
I am looking for a scanner with wifi that has the ability to scan 35mm black and white photo negatives and also slides. Lots of old family b&w negatives + Color slides + prints to scan in for archive. Any recommendations? Thanks*

I did last year our familyarchive with even 60x60mm and 60x90mm black and white negatives with an Epson Perfection V500 Photo scanner. Very happy with the results. Lots of correction options and high resolutions. Cost quite a bit and still using it for documents etc. No Wifi. It is fun(old stories) but it takes more time than you think!

What about this bad boy? No idea about quality, but looks like a cool toy and no computer required...

I don't think you're going to find a good scanner with WiFi. The Epsons are all very good, including the V500 listed. The Epson control and utility software is very good, too, *as long as you use it in "professional" mode," which just means you don't let it self drive. While sharpening is something that merits some serious thought (understatement intended), the sharpening available with the software isn't bad if you're not going to do it later and more thoughtfully (!!!...???). If you're a detail freak, be sure to check out VueScan, a software package. Particularly the "professional" version, which has lots of unique features-including the ability to store the entire dynamic output of the scanner. As I said, only if you're a detail freak. Canon scanners have improved a lot-they are now quite good-and their software improved immensely a few years back. For everything there is to know about scanning-including comparisons of drum scanners, dedicated slide scanners, and flat beds (which will show you how good flatbeds really are!), visit photo-i.co.uk The site hasn't been well organized, so you'll have to take a look around and dig to find things, but it is well worth it! The slide scanning stuff will probably be back a year or three. |
