Apple to start making TV's

Apple to start making TVs, report says - CNN.com

Apple plans to "blow Netflix and all those other guys away" with a console that would have Apple TV and iTunes built into it, the source reportedly told DailyTech.

The report says Apple plans to team up with an existing manufacturer to provide televisions that would be branded under the Apple name.
"You'll go into an Apple retail store and be able to walk out with a TV," said the former exec, who DailyTech said spoke under the condition of anonymity. "It's perfect."

Brian White, an analyst with Ticonderoga Securities, was bullish on the prospect of Apple entering what he described as the $100 billion LCD television market.

"In our view, the combination of Apple's powerful ecosystem, industrial design savvy, powerful brand and ability to reinvent product categories could make Apple a powerful force in the TV world in the coming years," White wrote in a report on the article.

He wrote that during a trip to China last year, Ticonderoga was "the first to uncover data points" suggesting Apple planned to release a "smart TV" by the end of the year.

Apple already makes an Apple TV device which, amid a string of recent successes such as the iPhone and iPad, has floundered by the Cupertino, California tech giant's standards.

The system, first introduced in 2007, is a box-like gadget that lets users stream Web content, such as Netflix streaming video, on their TVs. But even Apple CEO Steve Jobs was forced to acknowledge that Apple TV has "never been a huge hit."

In September, Apple slashed its price from $299 to $99, but even that hasn't made the service a household name.

A move into television would likely keep Apple neck-and-neck with one of its chief rivals: Google.

Google TV is a similar product to the current Apple TV. And Google also is widely expected to expand its service by integrating with actual televisions.
Apple did not immediately respond to a request for comment on this story.

Apple TV is the worse. Closed proprietary format. I got a WD Live Plus for $100 bucks. THis thing is awesome. I can connect wirelessly and stream movies from my computers or have it hooked to it's on harddrive. And it has access to various internet media such as Netflix, Blockbuster, Pandora etc. And it can read just about every audio/video format known to man.

people will pay through the nose for Apple branded LCD TVs because they match their iPhones, at the end of the day.

Apple might be able to get away with co-branding some Samsung or LG stuff but they will fail at the TV market if they really decide to enter it.

just like they failed entering the cell phone market amongst long established brands.

they will offer something new and the marketing will make people seem like they "NEED" it as usual. I personally think iPad's are a fail in practical use compared to a macbook or iPhone but marketing has made it a hit.

TVs aren't phones and Apple will not be able to break any new ground, offer superior quality (panels will have to be sourced from LG and Samsung anyway), or a value price point (it is Apple after all). Apple will be way behind the other CEs where they were ahead with the iPhone. The TV biz ia a super tough one especially for a company that can not build it's own parts.

cell phone market is harder to break in than TVs. Look at all the failed cell phone brands throughout the years and look at all the new TV brands that have hit the market and become profitable. ie: vizio who is currently the largest LCD TV seller in north america.

I would have paid twice that for mine too, it's awesome. The GUI isn't slick, but it works marvelously.

I would just imagine Apple would pair with a large manufacturer since all they're doing is putting their Apple TV into another box. Be interesting to see if they try to reinvent the wheel. Remember, Apple isn't too big to fail...

I know. It's by far the best and cheapest media player I found in my research. A no brainer at the price and they are continually releasing firmware updates for it. I am actually think of getting rid of my cable tv which has gotten way too expensive.

Agreed

I think it is quite ironic that Apple's first major commercial was a take off of Orwell's 1984 and today Apple to me is a closer representation of what Orwell was trying to portray in 1984 than PC

Correct. I can't see a giant glossy display in the living room catching on.

Good thing you can get it in matte for $100 more.

Great stuff.

Some article mentions the possibility of Apple releasing a TV at an unspecified point in the future, no details about the dang thing are known.

Yet people condemn it wholesale without even having the slightest clue what it will be like.

I don't understand the Apple hate. They are an incredibly successful and creative company. People who argue that a closed system like Apple's is bad, need only look at the customer satisfaction numbers to see the advantage of it. If you are a "tinkerer" then most Apple products are not for you. If you like elegantly designed, well manufactured products that just work (and in the case of their computers: often work for 4-6 times the average life cycle of a comparable PC) then Apple is great.

No hate at all. I use macs and pcs, and have a iphone. Compare AppleTV to the WD Live and tell me which one you'd rather have. Unless you were a total Apple fanboy the WD Live is the better choice undeniably.

Got given the 1st gen AppleTV years ago as a leaving present, still absolutely love it. Easy to use and I've not had a single problem with it.

Having said that, I'm not a video power-user per se, nor am I into piracy, both of which I dare say makes it easier to live within the 'confines' of Apple's audio/video format ecosystem.

My five year old TV is starting to show its age so I for one am hoping that rumours are true.

Call me a fanboy if it pleases you!

Hate to be so negative...., but IMO this is just Apple as a brand taking another step towards the consumer market and pull away from the 'pro' market. I give the Macpro line 3 more iterations before being EOL'd.

That said.... I love my two Apple TV's, iPhone and four Apple computers..... Probly getting an iPad as well in a month or so mainly for my wifes Salon.
