Well, I can't explain the limited edition bit, but
, Leica is the inventor of the 35mm format, and is one of the great lens manufacturers. This is a full-frame camera, so while the regular edition is certainly expensive at around $7k body only, it's still a hair cheaper than a Nikon D3X or Canon EOS-1D Mark IV. This is a top-of-the-line pro camera. That said, a top-of-the-line pro camera should cost around $7k, not $17.5k.
And while I've never held a Leica, let alone used one, I don't think that most professionals would agree that Panasonic has a better camera than the M9 in their lineup: http://www.digitalcameratracker.com/...sample-photos/
