Hey crew,

I just got done working on three short films that I just delivered and this is the first time in a while where I have time for myself for a bit, but I still want to work on my craft. As a sound designer and mixer, do you mess with anything specific when you're not working on a project at the moment?

I was thinking about perhaps recording my own sound effects, or even grabbing some animations from archive.org (or any other public domain source) and working on those.

Thinking about also testing new plugins, learning new hot keys, etc. Just wanted to see what was your technique, if any.

Thanks,

I'm considering buying a hand held recorder and a couple of mics, for post sync recordings - primarily atmos recordings, with the possibility of a short shotgun for pseudo-ADR.

Budget is tight, but not the only consideration as I have some studio kit to sell which could fund it all.

My absolute priority for the recorder is sound quality, especially for quiet recordings using external mics (eg recording room tones).
Built in mics would be very useful from time to time.
I've used Zooms a couple of times and they haven't inspired me - too plasticy and too many unnecessary functions.

I have little knowledge of suitable mics. Again, low noise is imperative, and keeping costs down is important.

Suggestions please, for both the recorder and mics?

Hi guys,

About to negotiate to mix a lifestyle tv series in 5.1 for broadcast on a specialty channel. I've been a salary mixer for the past few years and just wondering what the going rate is these days. I've asked around but just seeing what some other pro's think. If the series pays, let's say, $3k per episode, what should I be looking for? Is it hourly, per ep or should I make a deal for all 13 eps?

I guess I am wanting to know what % of the budget is set for the mixer?

Hey all

I am thinking to purchase some kind of small format digital mixing desk to stop mixing in the box for post sound and use the desk for all mixing, surround monitoring and stem recording...

Hey all

I am thinking to purchase some kind of small format digital mixing desk to stop mixing in the box for post sound and use the desk for all mixing, surround monitoring and stem recording back in to Protools and I need some advice

I currently have a Protools HD2 system (going to HD3 fairly soon), running PT8HD for the time being. But I think I am loosing so much time mixing like this plus I want to train myself to the big, post-sound house way.

The thing that I really dislike while mixing in the box is that I do not have immediate view of the EQ and compression settings and I have to open up plugin windows in order to see what is what.

Ideally, I'd like a Yamaha DM2000VCM but I think that would strain my budget a lot. Hence, I've been having my eye on a Tascam DM3200.

Has anyone used any of these two desks for that task?

If so, would you say that the built-in EQ and compression does the trick?

How many inputs should I be considering? I currently have a modest Digital 192 I/O interface but I could add another two when flipping to HD3 and run the signal to the desk with TDIF.

My Pro Tools template runs across around 128 tracks but for the time being I am trying to lay each SFX on a separate track, on per scene basis, as this minimises the automation on the SFX tracks. On busier projects I use far less sfx tracks, producing a SFX list per track, but unavoidably this method relies on a lot more in-the-box automation. I am happy to change my ways if they will create compatible sessions with what is considered to be the norm with the majority of sound-post places.

Any alternatives that I am not considering? Perhaps something with MADI that might help put all mac outside the room?

One last thing:
With Pro Tools 11 coming out, I am thinking I might ditch the option of going to HDX and get myself a Native HD system instead. But I will try to keep the current HD system, get the TC Electronic verbs and create myself an alternative TC Reverb 6000. So, whatever the desk it would need to be able to bus for that as well.

PS: I might cross post this to DUC so apologies to anyone that might be reading this twice.

The film has won many awards (none for sound) and is a great story.
Obviously this is for audio post work.

I am running Logic 9.1.8 on Mac OS 10.7.5. I'm working on post audio for a video project, and the editor has exported an AAF file from the most recent version of Avid video editing software. The file is the right size on my HDD (it's 214 MB, so I imagine it's inclusive of audio files). When I open Logic and import the file, it creates a ton of tracks (120 or so), but they are all empty. There are no regions in the bin. I had a similar issue with two different editors (one was on Avid, one on Adobe Premiere), but the previous Avid editor got me an OMF and it worked perfect (the Adobe one never resolved).

Does anyone out there know a way to get the AAF to load properly into Logic? (Preferably without spending a lot of extra money.) I don't know if he'll have a chance to get me an OMF by the time my deadline hits. I've Google searched to the ends of the earth, and while I found others asking similar questions, I have yet to find a solution.

Help me Obi Wan, you're my only hope.

Suddenly out of nowhere the EQ goes back to the "default" setting (the same as before the region) whenever I stop. So I can´t write the automation to the whole selection.

A quick fix for it is to drag the whole region on to another DX track and dial it in again, then move it back, but sometimes some of the other DX tracks have the same issue. If I remove the Plug-In and click OK on the Pro Tools automation will be lost warning, set up a new EQ and automate that it works again. But then all automation is lost, of course.. And that´s no good.

I´ve tried "clear special - plug-in automation", tracks in latch mode, etc, etc but to no success..

Can anyone explain what is happening here?

Oh, and Pro Tools version 10.3.3 + CPTK

edit: no success with Write on stop either.

- wich reverb will be available when it was realesed? Any clues? I make a little research and found that

- Lexicon Native is not AAX
- Tc Electronics is not AAX
- Altiverb is not AAX
- A2c Audio is not AAX
- Valhalla is not AAX

just to quote a few, or at least the more popular. I`m a user of Lexicon no my Native HD, and afaik just the new Phoenix reverbs one is AAX. And revibe of course...
it is a major issue, no?

Hi there!

We have some very reverberant spaces where I work and I´ve always wanted to record them. So I grabbed what I could find and recorded a couple for a scene in the feature I´m currently working on.

1 Schoeps CMIT 5 U
2 DPA 4011A (I think)
And a Sound Devices 644. So only 24Bit/48KHz. Set up in a kind-of-decca-tree with the Schoeps in center.

Recorded around 3 takes for each placement in the basement. Only 1 door there. Moved up to the 4 story stairway, placed at the top floor pointing down and to each side. Recorded top floor door (no-glass in it), third floor door and ground/first-floor door.

They turned out pretty well, allthough I´d like to take some more time with a couple of omni mics.

I know there´s a lot of metal impact doors out there but I wanted to share these. They are edited and stemmed down as LCR, so you can split them and just use the Schoeps or the DPA.
http://willyhetland.com/sound/HS%20I...oors%20LCR.zip
http://willyhetland.com/sound/image.jpeg
http://willyhetland.com/sound/photo.JPG

You may use them as you like but not sell!

It's a live show so it should be too bad but I'd really like to see if there is a quicker way than two separate mixes which I normally do, of fold downs for simple TV stuff, I can do the 5.1 then convert to stereo but the artist can only hear it in stereo so tempted to do that first.

Appreciate any input.

Formats, different types of files, etc.
What's the typical turnaround for an hour and half feature?
I am using Logic and I know protools is preferred, I have a copy of pt 8 just not familiar with it so I'm doing it Logic.

Any other advice would be greatly appreciated!
I've read the most of the stickies, still going through a few and reviewing.
Take it easy on the newbie please!

I've no idea why this is bothering me, but I've been trying to figure out why some of the dialogue in the TV series Bates Motel sounds odd.

My wife really likes the show and has taken me along for the ride. It's not so bad, but I find myself focusing on the dialogue. At times it has this sorta "grainy" rough quality to it. I'm wondering if it's the mic they used during ADR or something else in post. Anyone have any insight into it?

I can't find a clip on the Internet that clearly displays this but if you watch an episode at the opening, the line: "Previously on Bates Motel" you can clearly hear it.

Just curious...

Are there any ideas on how to make the audio at least acceptable for the pitch?
Anybody on here got some milk for me?

Hi,
I'm currently working on a tight deadline feature. My first actually.
And there is a 15min VFX "new years eve - at 00:00" scene. So lots of fireworks explosions. I have some firework recordings in my library, but 15 minutes of The same gets boring real quick.
I'd love to take a Week and record some myself but deadline is in two weeks, so that leaves one Week editing before one Week dub.

I've read a bit in The "new sfx library thread" but didnt immidiately find any.

Any tips on some great firework libraries?

Preferably one library with different multiple bg explosions along with clean single ones for on-screen sync wise.

Thanks!

Good morning everyone!

I recently upgraded my sound system to a 5.1 bluesky mk2 mediadesk. (sounds great to me sofar )
I am on protools 9 and have a digi 003 rack+
I am on windows 7 pro 64

everything is playing well in protools, I have calibrated every speaker and sub.

If I close protools and want to listen to a cd, the L and R speakers alongside the sub work properly.

sofar everything is ok,
however, If I want to watch a 5.1 movie on my computer using windows media player and my sound card the digi 003 rack+,in order to be able to use my 5.1 bluesky system,
well I don't understand how to do it. In the control panel I can select only stereo channels of my digi 003.
Does someone know if it is possible to use the digi 003 sound card for surround to play in windows media player?
thanks for any contributions
cordialement!

Hello all, thanks in advance for your help. I am working freelance on a feature and we don't have the money for a collection of surround BG's (like Frank Serafines'), and I have tried to find individual tracks to purchase, but it seems like the surround collections are bundle only. I should also add that this movie is heavily reliant on BG's as there is very little dialog, and the film takes place in the Alaskan wilderness. We are looking for backgrounds that are true to what we have from production audio ( which is unusable ), but it also has to fit in with the somewhat darker tone of the story. In the end it may have to come down to purchasing one of these libraries, but if I could pick and pull only what we need somehow it would be a big help. If anyone has any ideas please let me know, Thanks!

Hey folks,

I've just been given an opportunity to work in a Post/VO studio that is run on SADiE systems. I'm looking to get up to speed on the software, so have downloaded the demo and having a look at it, reading the quick start manual and so forth.

But learning resources are a bit thin on the ground, so I'm wondering if there's anyone who has some tips/pointers or if there's a user discussion group that I've missed that can help with queries or tutorials with regards to using SADiE in a Post/VO/Radio context. I've PM'd a couple of guys here already but wondering if there are any other guys on SADiE here! I've heard that you can edit your audio while it's being recorded, but I've not been able to find any clear explanation how to edit a stream mid recording.

Any big features/quirks etc. that I'd miss coming from a PT background into SADiE?

Thanks!

Hey guys, I've been working on my company's first video game for the past 8 months and our Kickstarter finally went live! I'm excited just to have it out in the open. I'm honestly not sure if I'm supposed to post this here, but considering that all of my work, and the sound of the game, is completely SFX driven, I thought maybe I could poke around here for some feedback on the project and the soundscape I'm developing.

TUG by Nerd Kingdom — Kickstarter

I did a write-up for our website that talks a little bit about the sound work I'm doing for the game, which uses sound fx to build up a score inside the game as the player plays.

Nerd Kingdom

And me and the art team came up with a little animatic teaser that shows how it all comes together. The music behind the track is composed by me, built almost entirely out of SFX that are from the game itself (the chanting and the boy's whistle aren't, though whistling might be added down the line)

TUG Animatic - YouTube

If any of you guys are interested in games or game sound, I'd love some feedback! And any help we can get to spread the word would be greatly appreciated as well!

Hi Folks,

I know this is a pain in the a** topic but I'm going to ask about quotes! We have been given the opportunity to pitch for a new animated series (52 x 11 episodes) and I'm interested to know if anyone can pitch in with advice.

We do a lot of sound for animation but it tends to be small projects, one offs etc. Maybe just voice over, just sound design and so on.

So I am a bit unsure as to what budgets tend to be like for a full on 52 ep series of high quality animation. Probably for CITV or Cartoon Network, something along those lines.

Anyone worked on a project like this that would be happy to advise?

Cheers

The studio preferably has to be able to play a quicktime in the booth, and deliver nice unprocessed voice-overs in either a protools session or an embedded AAF/OMF.

Second choice would be a good music recording studio without video capabilities, and a laptop with the quicktime as a guide for the lenghths of the voice over parts...

After a battle with my girlfriend over this topic (She's a die hard The Voice fan) I've decided to hopefully further prove my case here.

This is about the head to head battle rounds on the voice where two singers sing a duet piece. I am thoroughly convinced the music, including the singing of course, is ALL done in post. First of all, the singers in this round have NO monitors in front of them. No in ear monitors either. So how are they hearing themselves so well for what sounds like a nearly flawless performance? Rather fishy if you ask me... As a performer who sings live on occasion, you don't sound that good in front of such a big crowd if you have no monitoring what-so-ever.

Nextly, I hear no breath pops on the Bs or Ps, everything is pristine and super clean. That being said, I am sure they recorded the takes in a studio setting and then dubbed those takes over a (probably far less superior) performance for the audience we see on TV and judges reactions.

Also, a part of me is saying they definitely used some light pitch correction on the performances being aired because I don't hear one bum note in the harmonies or ANYTHING at all! I'd love to be an audience member for a "The Voice" battle round and hear what's really going on. (If anything at all, the conspiracy theory part of me wants to say the whole show is fake and scripted)

So who is with me? Am I being paranoid or is there a lot of deception going on with this show like I believe. It blows my mind how many people (My GF included) think that the performances we see on TV are being aired "in the raw."

Hi guys :)

I recently left the world of Steinberg :( and went into Avid. The first thing that hit me was of course the change in keyboard shortcuts and the lack of a scissors tool (!).

But then another problem came in. The previous guy had no system whatsoever in terms of looking for sound effects. He would open the folder on Finder and manually browse through all the effects.

I was wondering if there are programs etc that I can convince my new bosses to purchase to make this process less painful. Having something close to Nuendo's search engine would be awesome! I've looked at Soundminer so far, but was wondering if there are any others out there. I'm on PT9 HD btw.

Thanks all for your input! abduction

Another question, what would be a good plugin to check for levels? I depended on the SLM128 when I was using Nuendo. What bout Tools?

EDIT: Bad grammar

My DA-88 has some problems. I took it to a local repair shop and I think the guy who runs it was overwhelmed with work. The shop had the machine for two months before I went and took it back when he said it would be a couple of more months until he could work on it. He said one head is fractured and needs to be replaced. The unit was working just fine until I did a remote with it last summer and it did not work when we set it up.

I don't want to spend a lot of money on the machine as it is somewhat ancient technology by today's standards but it is nice to have around for the occasional project we get in on DA-88 Tape.

Any suggestions as to who does good repair on these machines at a reasonable price point? I am located in Ohio.

Thanks in advance.

I put together a few pieces which I thought sounded really good from various metal sounds etc.

But the client thought it wasn't old enough sounding.

It needs to have a general running sound and also a start up cycle and switch off.

I'm struggling to think of which way to go now. Anyone got any ideas of where to start with such a thing? Or have any good field recordings that might be useful?

Thanks

Hello ladies and gentlemen!

I'm a relatively green engineer in seattle who just landed his first internship with a post house. I have paid work experience with web series and indie film, but have had to hold a crappy day job for two years.

I'm simply wondering if freelancing post and/or music mixing/composing is feasible. I'd like to quit my day job and focus purely on sound work. Would it be possible to survive on freelance bid sites and marketing myself around Seattle if I push hard enough? Or perhaps do you all think I should just finish the internship first while keeping my crap job?

Any advice and insight is greatly appreciated!

Hi there,

I've had a tricky session this week with isolation and ended up using booths when I would have liked to have kept everyone in the same large acoustic space. Anyway I want to try and re-create the acoustic space for the booth instruments and so have taken sweep recordings with a LR and Blumlein pair.

So my problem..

The studio has Altiverb 7 but the mix studio has Altiverb 6. I want to make sure the patch works before the mix session and so have got hold of a naughty copy but it doesn't have the pre-processor.

Would anyone with Altiverb 6 be up for sending me the IR Pre-processor? It seems to be missing from my bundle and I need to convert the sweeps into a format that's readable by Altiverb 6.

Would really appreciate it

thanks
Owen

I do about 1 (that's right) theatrical a year, the rest is TV and corporate, but have been doing more and more video-editing and producing lately. So I don't need the mixroom all the time and it would be nice to share ideas and workload now and then.

Good evening folks.

Looks like everyone who asked for EuCon support in Reaper, a DAW many of us love to use, is about to enter the testing phase.

All interested parties are invited to join the testing in this forum thread, where the developer in charge of this part of Reaper has posted the requirements and what you can expect.

EuCon alpha testers - request for brave volunteers - Cockos Confederated Forums

I think it's great that it's finally happening. If EuCon support is anywhere close to what you can do with OSC in Reaper, this should put all the hardware that so many of us have to very good use.

Here's a quote of the first post in that thread, if you're curious:

Quote:

It's almost time to start the testing / feedback process.

I have no Mac development environment currently, so for the alpha testing we'll start out Windows only.

CAUTION -- There have been BSOD's (developers are notoriously hard on things, and the EuCon drivers get in pretty deep), so DO NOT use this anywhere but a test environment.

If interested, please post to this thread including:

Hardware setup -- incuding audio / video / computer / EuCon
OS info
Plugin info -- e.g. "I use the Reaper plugins, plus Scott Stillwell's stuff", "I use Nebula exclusively", "I use a lot of VSTi's", "I use UAD", etc.
Typical project size - only include ones that you are willing to subject to this torture test :)

EuCon experience level -- EuCon has its own set of challenges when it comes to DHCP / caching, etc. The goal here is to get EuCon owners who are regularly using EuCon with another DAW. This will help us keep EuCon and Reaper issues isolated from each other.

The goal of the alpha phase is to test the very simplest things at a primitive level -- e.g. can you easily download and install the software?, does it crash immediately?, those sorts of things :)

Please pass this on invitation on to any folks whom you think won't be reading this forum, but who may benefit from EuCon support in Reaper.
I am a student about to graduate film school in a few days. 8 months ago I didn't even know how to automate a plugin and now I just finished mixing 5 short films in two months. I did the whole process from spotting with the directors to editing then pre-mixing all the way to the final mix. Thank you guys for answering my posts and giving me advice (especially concerning how to use the advanced automation features in PT). This shows how great the post community is and I hope to be working with you guys soon.

I was asked to record a voice-over and since my home studio is not suitable, I was wondering if you could recommend me some recording studios in London that hire vocal booths only or dry hire studios?

Hey guys, I am working on this short film called "Chapter 7: Exit Interview" for a school project and am re-recording/mixing all the audio for it. I had a question though! There is a scene in the movie where all 4 of my characters are talking to eachother inside of a van. Now, since I re-recorded all the ADR for it, the vocals sound REALLY clean and crisp. How can I get my vocals to sound more like they were recorded live on set, inside of a van? I'm having some trouble. Would appreciate any help or tips :) Here is a link to the original so you can get an idea of how it sounds.
Thank you! Also, feel free to ask any questions if you need more information!

Right now, I been using the API 550B for my eq...
But, lately I've been using the SSLEQ...
I also have McDSP...
I'm torn between, "what I want to use, and what I should be using"
I understand I have to trust my ear too...
What should I be doing?...

My band is putting the finishing touches on our first real album. We've spent a great deal of time making sure it sounds great, we're hiring a graphic artist/illustrator to do the artwork so that it looks awesome. I'm starting to think about the packaging for the release. Here's the two options that have caught my eye:

1-Digipak:
Obviously very nice and professional looking. Would make our product look even more dialed in. Could get 500 copies for $895.

2-4-Panel CD Wallet:
Not an amateurish looking option. Can still look great if done well. Less protective of the disc (but who reaaaaallly cares about this?). Could get 1000 copies for $850.

Now, obviously in a perfect world, I'd like to get 1000 copies in the digipak, but they're just so expensive. What are everyone's thoughts on a full length album being released in a 4-panel wallet? Does it seem cheap? I'd be able to print twice as many copies, for basically the same price.

Please give me your thoughts!

Hi all,

I'm currently conducting a PhD research survey on cinema audio calibration. The survey is to collect the opinions and preferences of re-recording mixers working on film and film trailers.

The survey is online, can be taken at your convenience and should take about 15 minutes. You will be anonymous on the survey and your individual survey results will be kept confidential.

If you are interested in participating in the survey, please contact me so that I can email you a link.

As a participant in the survey, you will be entered into a drawing to win one of three sets of AKG K242HD or K272HD headphones, your choice.

Your answers and input on this survey are extremely valuable and are part of a larger research effort towards the future of cinema calibration.

Cheers,

Just a thought, how many folk only charge an hourly or Day rate for sound design/mixing for jobs compared to charging for usage. We deal with a lot of bookings for voice overs, we kinda act as an agency, and sometimes for tv ads get paid for the usage or buy out to be more specific.

Is this something that is common in mixing or design as well?

Hi- I have mixed a lot of commercials in the R128 format for the Netherlands, but now must do a bunch of European versions and have not sent anything abroad lately, so want to check and hope some people here can help....I think most of these countries are also using R128 now, but hoping some of you can fill me in if there are any irregularities you are aware of - for example, last time I mixed for UK (quite a while back actually), you needed 1/2 frame blank at beginning and end of spot (but I looked at Channel 4 specs today and they say 6 frames). Is the UK using R128 yet (or PPM -6) and do I need to squeeze the audio for the spot to 19 seconds (and advise the video person to do the same - or 6 seconds off each end?) - My list is=
UK
Norway
Denmark
Sweden ?
Spain - R128?
Finland - R128 in June or already implemented?
Germany - R128
France - R128
Belgium - R128
Turkey - ?????

I am especially curious what Turkey's specs are! And no, I unfortunately don't have a list of the broadcasters and cannot contact them directly. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Hi guys,

I'm looking for a mic preamp for doing foley work. I've narrow down to these 3 choices. I hope you guys can give me some advice. I would be using it for ADR at times, but 90% of the time, for foley usage. Here are the choices:

- Aphex 1100 mkII
- John Hardy / Jensen Twin Servo
- GML 8302

I'm using both 416 and KMR81 mics.

I'm currently using Grace Design m101. But somehow, I just don't really like the sound. I mean it's good, clean, transparent and quiet. But somehow, it sounds abit too sterile to my taste.

I have no experience in using the above 3. I know there are other recommendations such as, Millennia, etc. However, the reason why I narrow down to them is after days of searching and reading forums, and I came to these ->

Aphex 1100 seems to be popular recommend for foley in various forums/threads,
John Hardy / Jensen Twin Servo - Walt Disney Post is using them,
GML 8302 - Warner Brothers Post uses them in their foley stage.

I'm expecting alot of answers such as, "Any one of the above will work". But I would hope to get some answer in the point of view -> "If you are me, which one would you choose, and why?"

(My area don't really have those kind of showroom or rent out service that I can hear it with my own ear. Therefore, I'm counting on you guys. Thanks a million!!)

Anyone on this forum that sometimes imports a Quicktime with multi-channel audio at 24 bits as a basis to start working?

If you want to preserve the 24 bits, then extract the audio from the Quicktime with other tools first because Pro Tools will truncate the last 8 bits!!!

THIS IS ONLY WITH QUICKTIME, REGULAR AUDIO IMPORT WORKS CORRECTLY

TEST: In a 24 bit session, create an audio file with for example a sinus at -105 dBFS (you can do this by creating a sine at -96 dBFs and then gain it down a bit, if you check your level meter, you'll see there's still audio in this file, put this audio file in a Quicktime container with for example Final Cut Pro, make sure your FCP sequence is set to 24 bits as well, import via Pro Tools and check the level. It'll be silent. Extracting the audio from the Quicktime with other tools and then import in Pro Tools will result in a correct 24 bit file, with the low level sine.

Hopefully this will get fixed in a v10 update, but it's uncertain.

I'm headed to LA in June/July to visit my sister, who works as an editor, and take some time off and enjoy the west coast.

So apart from the usual tourism stuff, vegas trip, friends and other people I'm thinking of maybe visiting a post-house/dub stage to say hello and look at how it's done in Hollywood!

What's the custom like? Randomly pop in and say Hi or book a date in case there's a burning deadline going on?
And if it's even possible then which firm and where abouts?

If not then there's always sun, sand and Screwdrivers! :)

Tim Cook had previously stated that there would be an update to the Mac Pro this year (after several years now of stagnation), and hardware updates are generally either announced at Macworld in January, or at the WWDC in June. What's going to be in the new Mac Pro, ya think?

I am a long time lurker but finally have a question I can't seem to find an answer for with the search function.

University has tasked me to do the post production for a short film. They have provided us with a couple of different ones to choose from but none are particularly inspiring. I was wondering if anyone could point me in the direction of some possible willing animators or film makers that would grant us permission to work on some of their work? Ripping a film off youtube isn't an option as the assignment guidelines prohibit it.

The end product will be in 5.1 and will obviously be passed back to the film maker

Thanks

Hello Everybody,

As some of you know I'm a picture editor who dabbles in audio post. Mostly shorts, trailers and a few micro-budget features. It's something I'm very interested in, but obviously don't consider myself a professional at. I'd call myself a skilled beginner, with the benefit of lots of watching and listening on others' dubstages (spent the day in stage 2 at Warner Brothers today on a CBS pilot).

Anyway, I was wondering how people use noise reduction tools, such as iZotope's RX2 or RX2 Advanced in their workflows?

Is it always used as a rendered effect, clip by clip, or does anybody use an adaptive noise reduction plugin in realtime? If so, under what circumstances, and do you have any tips for best results?

Just curious, mostly because iZotope is offering a reduced upgrade to to the "advanced" version and this feature is the one thing that I'd find interesting about it. But if nobody uses it that way, it doesn't offer much else I feel I need.

Thanks in advance.
Is there a way of saving descrete multiple regions/clips to either PT or soundminer.
Having used Pyramix you can save multiple regions as a library entry and spot or drag it back to the timeline.
I know you can group regions but Im used to PT 8 where you then loose handles and all the regions start and end at the same point.
I want to keep the elements within the grouping discrete, not a consolidation.
Hope this makes sense

Hi all,

I have a question on the wording of some delivery specs. Any advice would be appreciated! I'm mixing several spots that will be for internet / streaming only.
I've been a little puzzled by the wording of the specs.

One websites asks for:

"Audio: Max peak audio between –6db and –12db"

A second website asks for:

"-Audio Bitrate: 192 kbps
-Audio: AAC (.mov), FFDShow (.mpg), Volume should be normalized to –23 dBFS"

By "Normalized" do you think they mean an average / RMS level ?
Normalizing an entire stereo mix (VO, SFX, Music etc.) to -23 dBFS doesn't seem to make sense...

thanks for any input...

Their new add on which sits on top of the unit and uses the direct outs in the other direction just shows how flexible the unit is.
It would be really nice to have it as a field unit but also as an interface with its quality preamps and limiters for recording into protools but also as a break out box if you wanted to monitor in 5.1
I'm putting together a small room for mixing 5.1. I am currently working with 5 Yamaha HS80. I would like to work with 5 monitors without bass management (full range), and add an LFE channel.

Here's my question:
Many subwoofers on the market do not have a dedicated LFE input. Can I use a sub without LFE input (like the Yamaha HS10) connecting one input L or R?

Will this bring some problem or disadvantage?
It's seems to start fine but a few minutes in the process stops and I get an error message that simply says "not found" nothing else no numbers or anything. Anyone ever encounter this problem before? Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks a lot!

Was over at the Slate HQ in Hollywood yesterday. We talked about the MTX and MTI application in post. And I CAN see it being a very viable mix solution in post with some minor changes. I especially think the MTI will be a fantastic solution for ADR and Foley stages. It will completely negate the need for a separate computer screen.

Same for the MTX. I am pretty excited about being able to lose computer monitors on the stage, without losing editing or waveforms as I mix.

Hi ,

wonder if anyone can help
i am trying to help set up a Prima LT that we had in our old facilility.
It worked perfectly fine there.

The problem is as follows:

We had verizon install the ISDN line which has 2 Telephone numbers.
212 xxx xxx1
212 xxx xxx2
The line seems to come from our T1 circuit panel in our closet.
Tip and ring wire comes from the wall jack and into a little brown box with two RJ11 ports .
opening the box it seems that the tip and ring wire are screwed onto a terminal in the box and flipping it over it looks like it feed the red and green wire which then goes and feeds the bottom socket.

I have tried several rj11 wires out of the socket. 1 pair/2 pair /3 pairs
(infact i have also tried them in both sockets) and going into the Line 2 Socket on the back of the Prima, (line one is closed off).
when i turn the prima on it starts up fine, and on the back i see a flashing green light, however if i input the number of our ISDN lines to dial (either 1 of them) the Pirma tells me the line is down.

Now before i goto the trouble of getting Verizon out here, I wondered if anyone can tell me exactly how this should be wired from the sockets provided to the prima into the line 2 socket?

Is it just a 2 pair or a 4 pair? I honestly haven't had to deal with ISDN before and have no clue, although im ok with analogue lines.

Thankyou for your help

Brian
