Concerning the Tools provided by the MFIT Bundle:

a) What is the difference between converting to AAC Plus with the MFIT droplet and doing it directly with itunes set at AAC Plus?

b) Sometimes I drag and drop a wave file to the floating window of the MFIT droplet and to the Audio to Wave droplet and it does nothing. BTW I am using OS 10.6.8. I have already reinstalled the package.

c) Using afclip: 0 means Left Channel, 1 means Right Channel and what is 2? Center?

d) Clips and ISPs: I was mastering today a specific pop rock song ( like U2 With or without you) with ceiling at -0.8. afclip provided me 0 clipping and 5 ISPS.

Is this something to worry, go back and readjust everything or should it be fine?

Thanks

I noticed 90% of the loud electronic-genre tracks make it totally flash on the Analog. Am i wrong or every analog blink is intended as "the digital samples i just read could produce an analog clip after the DA interpolation"? (I suppose this must have as a premise that my digital full scale is translated from my DA as the max analog voltage before analog clip?)
Is it possible I need a whole 1 dB reduction on the master of the track (with a limiter, redithered after limiting) to make the analog meter stop blinking?

Can you please shed some light as to how do all of the pro producers/mastering engineers get their tracks to spend a dB or 2 in "soft clipping" on the master bus? That is if you take a track and put it into your DAW at 0 dB, it will clip the master output and the track output by anywhere between 1-2 dB's. Whenever I use the IRC 3 mode in Ozone 5, with the ceiling set to 0 dB, it shows that my track is clipping on my mastering chain inside of my project session, but when I bounce it and import back into ableton, It does not clip the track or the master at all.

thank you.

For example,

The mix is below par and you have no interest in teaching someone how to mix it better to achieve a nice master

You don't like their music

You don't want to waste your time working with an amateur producer

You don't do that style of music

You're too busy to take on a new client right now

The artist is not someone you'd want to be associated with or waste your time on?

Any other reason?

or does it make absolutely no difference to you what material you are working on, and will accept any client that comes to you looking for mastering work?

Also, do any of you full time mastering engineers (someone who makes a living entirely from mastering) go looking for work? (e.g. cold calling/mailing record labels, offering your services to artists, networking on facebook, offering free trials to desirable potential clients etc)

Or do you sit back and let the work come to you, rather than go chasing it?

Hey all,

I have a project I need to master. I was wondering what kind of recommendations I can get when it comes to receiving songs that all have different sample rates. I have a few that are recorded at 44.1, a few at 48 and a few at 96kHz. I usually master everything in the same session so I can reference each one to make sure I'm on the right track with each song.

Is it best to master everything in 44.1? Import the 48kHz, 96kHz into a 44.1 session since they will be dithered down to 44.1/16bit in the end anyways? Will that cause the audio to suffer at all?

Also, some are 44.1/16, some are 48/24, some 96/24.

Can I use Wave Editor, import a 96/32 bit file for instance, use the sample rate converter to change it from 96kHz to 44.1kHz, then save the file as a 16 bit file so in the end the file would be 44.1/16bit. Then do this for all of the files, import them into a 44.1/16bit Pro Tools session and master from there? Then bounce down (with a dither?) to 44.1/16bit?

EDIT: This is what I'm trying until I get some replies. I opened up Wave Editor. I used the sample rate converter tool, set it to high quality, and converted each file to 44.1. I then went to 'Save As' and changed the bit rate to 16bit and saved. I did this for every file that wasn't in 44.1/16bit. A few of them were already so I didn't touch those ones. They are now all in 44.1/16 bit format. Is this ok?

Any quick replies would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

Hi All,

The above article goes into detail about mix buss compression.

Mastering houses usually list in their specs that we send them mixes without compression.

I usually compress my groups -- drums, vocals, music, bass with the "usual suspect" two buss compressors such as api 2500, 33609, etc. Just using those as an example.

If I bounce a stereo track consisting of compressed groups, am I handcuffing the Mastering Engineer? Should the stereo track get bounced without group compression and then sent to the mastering engineer?

I’m a bit confused by different RMS level metering methods.

According to the often referred to IEC 61606:1997 standard, or the AES17 standard, RMS/Peak parity should be set so that RMS displays +3dB higher than it actually is. Through this, the RMS and Peak value will be the same on a meter when playing a static sine tone.

When I say “actually is”, I refer to the measuring principle that RMS is derived from a 0,707 relation to the peaks of all sine waves in the recorded sound. If one uses that principle, measuring a static sine tone will make the RMS value display 3dB lower in volume than the peak.

I can set Wavelab to measure loudness using either AES17, or using the 0.707 of a sine peak principle. When set to AES17, Wavelab reports an RMS that is 3dB higher in volume than when using the other method (which Wavelab uses by default).

Many engineers, even notables like Bob Catz, has declared they supports the practice of setting RMS value to display at 3dB higher, than what it does using the 0,707 principle. One example is this thread.

In my understanding, the “true” RMS value, or percieved loudness, is 0,707 of the sine peak. But if I set my meters to display +3dB in accordance to either AES17 or IEC 61606:1997, that ought to make me assume I’m 3dB higher in loudness than I “actually” am. Correct? My meters tells me the avg loudness I’m currently at, so why should I not follow what they tell me? Yet if I do, I risk being .. well "fooled".

Is the +3dB parity practice only to be used for visual reference in meters, but not for offline analysis?
If not, I find this confusing. Hoping some more initiated kind soul might help shed some light on this.

Thx for any comments

I'm doing my first ever (in six years as M.E.) all analog mastering project this week. I need some help: What levels should I be shooting for on the master tapes? Peak and RMS. It's a Ramones-esque rock band going to vinyl replication. Does it matter? Can the cutters adjust accordingly? I'm really excited to dive into old waters. Thanks.

Hello together,
i ´ve got some questions and perhaps somebody can help me a little bit. Its all about lowcutting and phasedistortion.

1)Perhaps some of you know the PluginAnalyzer from C.Budde?
If i do a "groupdelay" measurement of a plugin, for example an EQ with a 40Hz 24db lowcut, the plugin shows "400" or more on the left scale at 50Hz. But i don´t know what it means....milliseconds? or microseconds?

2)Often i try to lowcut a mix with way to much lowend below 40hz. I tried a lot of non-linear-phase eqs with different slopes, and i have the feeling, as the bass in the upper bass range (60-100Hz for example) changes and even seems to have a boost or be a little bit unbalanced. I think this is from some phase or groupdelay shifting. Linearphase EQs dont show me that behavior. But often the kicks seems to loose a little bit of clarity. Perhaps because of preringing.
Is there a good way or a special plugin, which is really good in that?

3)On a LinearPhase EQ: Is the preringing only in the range of the edited Frequencies, or in the complete spectrum?

4)Back to point 2: What is causing the change i hear on the upper bass after the sublowcut. Is it more the phase-change or the longer groupdelay. Perhaps there are other ways (Bell, Shelf, whatever, perhaps a combination from linear vs minimum phase) with less phase or groupdelay change?

Thaaaank you!!!!!

So, I was lucky enough (pun intended) to catch a few of the actual leaked tracks from the new Daft Punk album before they were taken down. One thing I noticed right off the bat. . . that knocked me out of my chair was. . .

The volume.

I had to actually TURN MY SPEAKERS UP! to hear more of the track! My speakers are usually at around 35-40% so when I hear music it still comes in pretty loud. . . .except I didn't notice it as loud. but after hearing those few tracks and having to turn up my speakers. . .I was floored. . .and inspired.

I'm definitely buying this album when it comes out

Here's one of the tracks

By the time the record goes off to mastering it is out of our hands so this process has always seemed strange to me. What is really going on in this stage or is it just something to make the A&R feel like they are in the record making process?
Every Indy record I have done has never done anything like this even when using the same mastering engineers.

Hi.

I've been using the 6 band ren eq recently on my masters. It's very cool, very musical. However I noticed today something I've never noticed before. When I eq my masters I like to roll of some highs, as well as adding and boasting in the low end and mids. Usually things are fine, however today I noticed that my song seemed to literally travel through the eq spectrum as the song played.
It started bright - then would literally go through each spectrum, it was almost as if somebody was playing gently with a hi fi style eq.
I've never had this problem before.

What am I doing wrong to generate this effect?
Thanks.

Hi forum! I've been trying out different mastering techniques lately. Since i produce dance music, obviously my goal is to get my track as loud as possible. Now, i tried to just put a gain plugin on the master (in Logic) and increase the volume until i start hearing distortion, then i back up a bit. But the thing is, when i do like this, i get a lot louder result and actually, i find, more dynamic result than if i'd use an expensive software limiter.

Now if someone could tell me why i shouldn't master without limiter, i'd be thankful

This makes my track clearer(lower mud higher treble obviously)but then I used a great sounding track to match it and it does the same thing. Why would it tell a gread sounding track to turn up the treble and down the bass.

Im hoping any of you more experienced Nebula users could enlighten me on any good Nebula instances that you use either on the 2 bus or in Mastering situations. There's so many libs for it im kinda lost at what next to try. Im trying to avoid any more compressors or reverb instances. I do use very slight Fabfilter Limiting but would you replace that with anything Nebula ?

Im mixing modern, pop, urban music and am currently getting some really nice results including these :

In this order -

fifty33 Mojo eq character plugin
Fabfilter q
Fab L
One of the Studer instances from the CD Master Collection
and at the end one called 76D M. Its the FET emulation I think.

I tried adding the other CD Masters tape instance after the studer but it crushed it abit too much for my taste.

Would any of you be kind enough to suggest anything i havent used which would make significant improvements? Would you replace any of these with anything else ?

Many Thanks,

Every few masters i'll get there will be variances in the mix that might need attending to, such as a dark or boxy lead vocal in the verses only. Or murkiness in the low end in only one section of the song. I tend to find myself going after these issues with automated eq or dynamic eq only for the sections in question. What's your process with this. Do you fix it, or request a new mix.

I've only had one mastering engineer in all the years i've been mixing do this. I would think more than ever you guys are receiving mixes that are not completely balanced.

I was hoping for some advice or general tips on recording vinyl for digital transfer.

Hardware:

Technics SL-1200MK2
Rane TTM 56 DJ Mixer
Shure M44-7 stylus/cartridge
RME Fireface 800
Apple iMac (3.1 GHz i7 / 8GB RAM / OS X 10.8.3)

DAW:

Pro Tools 10.3.5

So firstly, I have my Pro Tools session @ 24bit/96K with a low H/W buffer size (for the recording stage). Master fader created and 16-bit dithering is inserted. One stereo input channel, or sometimes 2x mono input channels are created and I monitor input level with a Dorrough meter (peaking around -6dbFS).

After recording I will edit and apply fades, no noise reduction techniques are used - unless the record itself is very noisy.

Bounce tracks out @ 16bit/44.1 or higher depending on file size.

Is there anything else I should consider along the recording or processing stages? Would it be unusual to slap some limiting to catch peaks?

Cheers.

Don't know if this is common practice, or if it has been done before, or if it is completely ludicrous. Since almost completing mixing of a whole album of 14 songs, the conversation turned to where the album will be mastered?

Before we go into that...I came up with what I thought was a brilliant idea.Supposedly the high end mastering facilities have far superior listening environments to what I have in the studio? Why not use it to our advantage!

It seems like every time I send mixes off for mastering, there is always the mastering engineers feedback that the bass in this song is not enough, too much in this one, could have a little less sibilant vocals in this one, less top end on the overheads and cymbals on this song, and kick needs more top end boost on this one.... There is always a balance or eq issue in most songs that could have been done better. (Let's leave comments for how i need to improve my mixing to later).

So my question is, why not bring my whole computer (assuming it is mixed in the box, and assuming all mixes are atleast 95% finished with maybe only balancing and minor eq fixes needed) and finalize all the mixes in the mastering studio before we master. That way, we would get a superior mix, ready for mastering without all those little anomalies due to songs being mixed in sub par listening environment studios and monitors. Does this practice occur?? Pro's and cons if any? Would I be completely mad in requesting this for to the mastering engineer?

Does anyone know if the uncompressed 'STORE' option in ZIP archiving still offer CRC checks to ensure data integrity like their compressed counterparts?

I like the fact that my masters are delivered in a container that will not extract properly if there is data error during transfer, but the amount of space saved by using compression is generally so minimal I'm starting to think it might be better to use a non compressed zip - faster to pack and unpack at both ends, and avoids any extra mathematics (even if it is lossless.)

Thanks

FunkyJunk, Milan will be hosting a mastering workshop (in English) with Stefan Heger of MasteringWorks (EU distributors of various mastering gear) on Friday at 10:30 AM. Stefan sourced the Dangerous Music Bax EQ for me last year. I'll be there for the first half, from around 10 AM. It's free, but you need to contact FunkyJunk, Milan soon and put your name on the list if you want to attend. Hope to see some of you there!

P.S. Just want to say I have absolutely nothing to do with any of the organisations mentioned, I just thought this might be a cool free workshop/networking opportunity.

Hi,

Anyone help me out? Have been searching all forums for weeks now trying to find a conclusive answer ad to why the input gain on VTm is set to minus 15db as standard, yet the default on vcc is minus 18db?

Just about got settled with minus 18db across my system now using kleighelm gain at start of each strip but whilst I know you can change the calibration for vcc and vtm I'm guessing its set to that default for a reason?

But yet the reason has me stumped as if you use both plugs as advertised ie VTm>vcc on channels then your always going into vcc too hot?

Very confused so please be kind?

Steven Slate? Care to share the wisdom which I clearly lack?

Many thanks to anyone who can help

Has anyone ever experienced getting a mix nice, wide, and full, only to realize it sounds way too crowded and mushed up on a smaller, two-way system?

I ask this because after doing a mix on my two-way Focal Solo6s, I brought the mix to a studio with ATC SCM100ASLs and found huge gaps in the frequencies. I ended up adding lower string parts to fill in the low-mid stereo portion of the mix. However, on my smaller speakers the mix seemed to get slightly more crowded.

Sometimes the added audio real-estate from 3-way mains is good, but it seems like they can't replace a 2-way speaker.

Comments? heppy

(Edit: I know this is more of a mixing question but I feel like it can apply to Mastering mixes as well.)

I am shopping for some mixing and mastering tools that fit my limited but growing mastering skill set. I use mostly virtual instruments and expect to track vocals or maybe an instrument "here & there". Whatever plugins I use will be mostly used for myself and Artists I work with. My theory is for "free" music (stream or free downloads) there is no reason to spend the extra money on "outsourcing" professional mastering. I feel you just can't beat the skills of someone who does mastering everyday unless they're "shi**y" at it. But for those songs I want to make money on, I feel it's only fair to my customers that I AT LEAST have a professional mastering expert AT LEAST scan over what I've done and if it sounds bad have the expert do the master.

So if it's free, it's "me (self mastering)"

If for pay, it's "they (pro mastering)"

Questions

1. Is Ozone 5 advanced more powerful that Ozone 5 and Alloy? In other words are the plugin separates in Ozone 5 advanced better than Alloy?

2. Is Alloy a better plugin than T-Racks Plugins?

3. Does Waves have an "all in one" solution like Ozone or will I need to buy a bundle? If I do, will waves be a lot more difficult to setup than Ozone and will the results be well worth it (literally saving me mastering services)?

4. My weakness is compressor settings. Are there wave compressors that are easy to use and as powerful as Ozone's multi band compressor? Does a T-Rack compressor compare to either Waves or Ozone (I already have T-Racks).

5. Vocal Plugins - How does Izotope Nectar compare with Waves Tune Lite? Nectar seems to come with a lot more features for a lower price than Waves lite Version. Does either one do the T-Pain effect better than the other? Does auto tune sound better than them? I DON"T expect to get too picky with vocals correction. Mostly subtle changes on vocal performances.

6. If I go waves. Which plugins (specifically) do you recommend using for an newbie with growing skills? I don't want to buy something that works great for me now, but has me wanting more in a few months.

I have watched several mastering videos. But, I want to know if there's a certain safe method/chain to use on mastering/mixing R&B, pop, edm and hip hop (i.e. which processor to use first, etc)?

time was short so i couldn`t go into deep.
within one hour of listening i was very pleased by their sound . very natural , precise in stereowith and deepness , warm and clear , transients , bass . i`m totaly aware that comparing speaker by 2 different listening session within two weeks in different rooms is nonsense, but at the moment the gurus seem to get the gap between psi and quested. QM10 are very small speakers with a hug sound and lows down to 30hz. i don't know how they can do it , but they do and they are passive.

is there anyone out there in the slutzarea who is working with gurus and willing to share his experiences?
please no suggestions on other speakers unless you compared them direct to guru. thx

Hey all,
So I recently started mastering at 96K, only to find out that I can not assemble my mastered 96K files in Waveburner.
However, there is one function in waveburner that I use extensively when creating album duplicates (i.e. instrumental versions, vinyl versions, radio versions etc.)

Basically, I master all of my audio with hardware and software in PT, then export as 96K files. I assemble the album version of the CD in wave burner, then export as raw audio. If there is a vinyl version for the album, I then use the Region-> replace region function to insert my unlimited version for vinyl release. This maintains the often complicated sequencing that goes in to the album version, but replaces the digital release files with the vinyl release files. Does DSP Quattro (Mac), Wavelab (Mac + PC), SoundBladeLe (Mac) or Sonoris do this?

Are there any assembly tools that can do this? I really like my processing work flow that I have developed in PT, but I would like to start assembling in a program that can work with 96K files.
Thanks for all of your help.

Waves and McDSP GUI in Peak?

Hi:

I don't even pretend to be an ME, but I've used Peak for quite a while, and I like it a lot. I had posted this over on Computer Music, but maybe someone here has experienced this:

After several happy years in Snow Leopard, I upgraded to Mountain Lion in anticipation of PT 11 (and Komplete 9, and Finale 2014). I was happy to see that Peak Pro still works in ML, because even if BIAS no longer exists, there's no reason to stop using Peak as long as it still works.

Anyway, here's my question: When I load either Waves or McDSP AUs, the GUI is not as it looks in Pro Tools or Logic or REAPER or DSP-Q or whevever. Rather than the normal look of the plugin, it's this ugly, generic sort of thing. (This was also the case in SL.)

On an unrelated topic, I can't load Waves into Peak as a VST because I get an error message.

Has anyone experienced this, and do you have any advice on how to get these plugins to display correctly?

Thanks,

Gary

Some background to my situation: the recording engineer (great engineer, but with no work ethic and much too enormous an ego) that recorded my band's album set to release at the beginning of NEXT week absolutely effed us over. After firing the guy who worked with us during tracking and pre-pro (he was hardly there during the whole process), he decided he wanted his credits out of everything and had me and another member drive 2 hours back to his studio to retrack leads and drums. Being the terrific guy that he is, he went about blaming everyone but himself, including US (how, I don't even know) and complained endlessly about "not having the time for this" etc etc. So he rushed us through the two songs we had to retrack, us all the while trying to hide the fact that we knew he had been talking smack about all of us to all of us.

Now, my problems begin here. I have been recording for about 9 years now, so it's no mystery to me what is going on when I'm in the studio with somebody else. Using this knowledge, our engineer decided that I would need to do all the editing for the retracked vocals (yes, our label paid this guy for this). After doing all his grunt work, he started b----ing about wanting more money because I got them back to him in a week (I have a life too).

And now it seems I'm just rambling in blind fury. So basically, he FINALLY got these two songs back to us (mastered as well), and he clearly put little effort/took absolutely no time with them. TBH, what he sent does sound great, however, there are important vocals missing all over, a 16 measure long bridge without the lead guitar part that is now 16 measures of us playing out the same chord prog, sloppy transitions, etc. The dude even had the courtesy to leave the click (albeit quiet) in one of them. It's a mess.

Our label contacted him, and he is conveniently on vacation for two weeks (but still able to instagram/vine from his studio). So now for these two songs, I need to retrack these parts myself, mix them into the master, and remaster the result. The 5 songs total that we recorded with him are mastered inconsistently, and transitions in between songs haven't been finished/added, so I'll need to do all of this as well.

My main problem is that, naturally, these masters are squashed so I have have no idea how to approach this. Of course I've turned them down to give myself some headroom, but I just don't know about laying these parts over the flat master, then adding more compression to bring it back up/glue it in. And I can't just not remaster, because then these two songs will be inconsistent with the other 3.

My general idea is to use an upwards expander or something similar like the C1 or the Renaissance Comp, but I've never been faced with something like this so I've no clue where to start with it. I've come to terms that it's not something that's completely fixable, but how would I go about using one of these tools to "decompress" these masters? Should I use some subtle subtractive linear eqing for purposes of fitting these parts into the mix? I'm desperate.

Probably a lot longer than this needed to be, but I'd be eternally grateful for any ideas/help/experience with similar situations/etc.

For example, if Bob Ludwig mastered a mediocre home recording made by Joe Wannabe, wouldn't it likely still sound like a mediocre home recording?

On the other hand, maybe any decent ME could master a mix made by Bruce Swedien and it would sound awesome.

So maybe WHAT and WHO you work with is just as important as your own skills.
Yes?

I wonder - what is your experience with Tube-Tech compressors ? Would this multiband be the most universal solution if you want just one Tube-Tech compressor with that typical beautifying sound ? (having the option of multiband, a kind of EQ etc.) Or rather CL2A or LCA 2B for more straight compressor action ?

How do you like Tube-Tech compressors in general for mastering ? Close to universal or rather special use ?

Just a quick question about the Panasonic DV - 4100 Dat Machine, I have a artists that wanted me to transfer some old material from his dat into a digital format. My only problem with this newly purchased dat machine is that I put a dummy tape in there (Thank god!) and now it won't open up!! When I hit the eject button I get two zeros that pop up at the top right hand corner of the screen but the unit never releases the dat tape. Any suggestions? This is a "new" (new to me but used, bought used off ebay) unit that I am just learning to use so this might just be a noob question regarding this unit. Any advice would be greatly helpful. However I am guessing that this is going to need to go to the local tech.

Other than the computer in the RADAR, the only computer I use is my DELL laptop to library my stereo mixes in WAV format.

What, if any, program can I add to my laptop that will allow me to "master" my mixes?

I dont have any kind of SW DAW, and I am not crazy about starting to work with one....is this a prerequisite for mastering programs?

I was wondering, if you have a muddy or overly sibilant master and you wanted to do some multiband compression, what do you prefer for transparent processing, low threshold/ lowratio or high threshold / high ratio?

This is tricky because it seems like you can essentially accomplish the same thing either way, but my gut is telling me one way is preferable for transparency, and I'm leaning towards low threshold/ratio. What say you? In what circumstances would you choose one method over the other. I'm using Ozone 5, fyi.
Thanks!

I am wondering something:

Lately I have been thinking more about just enabling the DC Offset filter and the intersample peak detection in order to make sure for certain that these things are taken care of in my masters. My question is, if my audio doesn't happen to have any DC Offset does it matter if the filter is on or not? Same with the intersample peak detection, although I always check to see if I have them first before implementing the detection tool. I am not always so sure about DC Offset, though. My second question is what does the DC Offset filter do exactly? Is it a high pass filter or something?

As I'll be completely rebuilding my studio from scratch later this year I'm getting a new desk.

I've been talking to several companies, but in terms of professionalism and product I found Sterling Modular the best.

Both will be custom jobs with several alterations to the standard models. It'll be all white with black padded bloster. There'll be no low front or back racks. The desk will be lowered an additional 4 cm for a height (to armrest) of 68 cm rather than the standard 72 cm.

Both options have advantages and disadvantages, but I'd like your input, especially if you have something similar.

Customized Plan A
Instead of the standard 2 x 12U, I'm reducing the size to 2 x 10U since I won't be needing more, and have an additional rack or rolling rack off to the side.

Reducing to 2 x 10U will lower the A version even more than the standard, how much I don't know yet. The screen will be a small 21" on an arm, aligned with the top of the desk.

+ Smallest desk size
- Screen is higher
- Gear isn't centered

Heavily customized Plan E type
There'll be no back or lower racks, there'll be no speaker shelves, there'll be fewer rack units for a smaller overall size, and the armrest will be straight instead of following the angles (corners "chopped off") for less surface area. Finally the back shelf for the screen will be further reduced in size.

Instead of the standard 12U+8U+12U it'll be just 6.5U+4.5U+6.5U. So imagine a smaller Plan E with everything trimmed.

+ Lower screen
+ Main gear can be centered
- Larger desk size overall

–
So the question mostly comes down to whether the benefits of a lowered screen and centered main gear of the customized Plan E exceed the benefits of the smaller overall desk size of the customized Plan A, which doesn't have centered gear and has a higher screen that could interfere with the sound image.

For ergonomical reasons I'm not going to put the screen off to the side or have the screen lowered into one of the racks in a larger Plan A.

Monitoring will be the new B&W 802 Diamonds.

I was looking for decent fullrange speakers to dig deeper into mastering and found the Pelonis within my budget - they are on their way to my studio actually.
At the moment I am using Focal Solo 6 and AKG 701 for this purpose, so I think and hope that the Pelonis are a step up from my current monitoring.

Hey probably everyone is gonna disagree with me on this but i despise compression/limiting. I find it almost always has a negative effect in both mixing and mastering so i only use in mixing when absolutely needed and lots of volume automation instead to try get music as balanced as possible. It might have something to do with my style of music, that i find without compression more dynamics and depth/seperation is preserved. So instead i simply turn up the volume on the mixdown till reaches clipping. For me this always results in a higher quality sounding result, but the problem with this is compared to everything else out there it sounds like 3-4 db softer, which some people complain about and might be problem for people playing it at sets. So is there a way to get a loud master without compression/limiting without effecting the sound at all just getting it loud? Need a solution that is as transparent as possible, thnks

Hey folks,

When you are utilizing mid/side processing during a mastering session that's using primarily outboard gear (via something like the Dangerous Master or Manley Backbone, for example), how are you 'solo'ing' the mid and side components of the signal to enable you to hone in on specific issues?
It's easy to do this 'in the box' with something like a Brainworx M/S Eq, as it offers a solo function to allow you to hear each component separately, but how about 'out of the box' when you want to use your favorite analog EQ just to notch a mid frequency or brighten the top on the sides?
Other than the Maselec MTC-1, there don't seem many analog solutions out there that offer a mute/solo of the sum and difference signals. Are you just using a combo of mono switching and phase flipping? Any advice or tips would be much appreciated.
Thanks.

I'm currently working on some stem tracks my friend has released for his dissertation for uni.

The mix is not 100%; but nothing ever is xD, I only own a set of Headphones (Sennheiser £25) and the worst Logitech HiFi speakers. I've tried listening to my mixes on different types of players: Ear Buds, 5.1, Car Stereo etc to get an overall vague feel of what i was doing wrong

I am looking to be purchasing a decent quality set of monitors but i'm no where near getting my penny jar up to that price range. So for now i'm going to have to put up with what i've got.

When it comes to mastering i always fall on Compressors, Multiband Compressers and Limiters. If you could point me in the right direction of some the types of limiters i should be using and if you know of any good and free VST comp's and limiters, that'd be great!

Here's the siad track i've been working on:
https://soundcloud.com/copypasteandl...-act-reclaimer

Thoughts and opinions will be greatly appreciated, and if you like what you hear you can have a crack at the full album, the link will be in the description. Also, if you have a SoundCloud give me a follow and i'll follow you back, i post regularly testing stuff out ranging for all sorts of stuff!

Thanks :)

I have Hybrid Trailer reference tracks that I am "snapshoting" so I can see the outline of their average frequency levels. I am noticing that all frequecies about 16000Hz completely drop off. However when I snapshot one of my tracks the frequency goes all the way to 20000Hz. Am I suppose to use a very hard lowpass filter during mastering at 16000Hz? What am I missing?

Thank you.

I'm demoing Soundblade SE actually and I'm trying this MFiT plugins RoundTripAAC, but with Soundblade it's a real nightmare and disaster!

I went to the Pro tools 9 rig in the studio, installed this plugin in, and it never shows up in the insert drop down menu of Pro tools 9.

Is there somebody who have it working on PT9?

Thanks.

What else would you guys suggest? He's doing this for free and as a mastering novice, I'm helping him for free while getting some experience. I don't really think it needs much more than compression though...any tools out there I may not know about?

I am having a debate elsewhere about why things are getting louder and more compressed and with poorer dynamic range.

First argument is that some think clients are worried their music will not jump out as well as others on the radio or on ipod shuffle.

Second argument is that cheap mp3 players dicate that master engineers are now mastering to make stuff sound good on crappy gear, one technique being brick wall limiting etc

Third argument is that some of this is now spilling over into vinyl mastering, so vinyl records are also suffering.

To what degree are these points true? Are there any other things going on?

I wonder if there is a difference in those that master products for mid / large sized record labels, who make sure their bands are being recorded really well. And then those that master for tiny labels with much reduced recording budgets or the bands have recorded themselves, but not that well.

If you reply, could you let me know which type of recording you are referring to? Cheers.

Hello,
I done some reading on this subject but haven't found a definitive answer.
When I would burn cds on my old burner they would skip all over the place so I got a new burner. It's an Asus sdrw 08d3s usb burner. The new burner's cds play fine on my computer and one cd player but in the car and on a different cd player the last song skips a lot.
There is 7 songs on the disc and only the last one skips.
I'm using Xp Pro sp2 and Burning at 16x using Ridata discs.
Any help is greatly appreciated
Thanks

Hey all.

What's your thoughts on different M/S encoders/decoders - and how they compare to each other. Can be software or hardware.

Is it (M/S encoding) a simple un-alterable process, always the same and scientifically repeatable - like turning a lightbulb on/off? Or is there a grey area involved, i.e. like introducing a dimmer into a lightbulb switch (to mash the analogy) ;)

For example, I've experimented with two instances of Voxengo MSED either side of the analog chain send, 1st to encode and 2nd to decode. Results vary.

Obviously it's a pinch to do everything in the digital domain (ala Brainworx), but I'm looking to incorporate the outboard in this process.

Many thanks chaps.

First off I am not a ME. I am a producer & mix engineer that is forced to master some projects due to budget constraints.

I am truly baffled because I have to do mastering sometimes. Loudness, no problem reaching -9 RMS without damaging clipping. Translation, fine on all systems.

Problem...everything that I reference to that has a real ME & nice budget sounds like it comes from the same mastering house. And they don't.

Let me explain what I hear. Super smooth EQ and compression. Overly compressed, but in a smooth pleasing way. Nothing stands out. Everything is a cohesive whole. The top end is always sparkling without harshness. Almost as sounding like there's a steep LP filter way up around 16k. The mids are never "poky". And the lows are very strong & round. Smooth. Obviously with some HP for translation on bass deficient systems.

Every pro master I hear sounds like it comes out of the same magic box. It drives me absolutely crazy trying to chase it!

I would love to really know how to achieve this is a mix project studio. People are obviously doing it. I got ears, I got nice tools...just tell me the secret society magical box so I can go buy the damn thing :)

DMG Audio : VST/AU EQ, Compression & Dynamic Processing

Testing this plug -in for few days now and I must say I am totally impressed with the sound quality and versatility of the EQ.

To my ears it sounds better then any plug-in EQ I own (Brainworx BX, PSP Neon HR , Ozone 5.....) and even better then MDW HiRes on TC 6000.

I LOVE the versatility and options it offers, I can finally "build" my own GUI.

Thinking about building a dedicated PC with AES IO and dedicated custom MIDI controller just for the EQ.

Opinions welcome :)

Best,
