I saw on another thread someone said just about all free drum kits are illegal.
Well I am trying to make my music (beat and vocals) and don't want to end up getting sued for something illegal. I'm poor so I am wondering if there ARE any free LEGAL drum kits anyone knows of. I highly believe I will get noticed/semi-famous, so legalities are a big issue for me.

Like this song, but as you can see, the top commenter is saying that the song has copyright issue from a sample in the beat. I don't want this happening to my stuff.

Nice little tune right here, check it out:
Chris Webby - "Turnt Up" Ft. Dizzy Wright (Official Music Video) - YouTube

Please no negativity, just answer the question.

So to summarize, I am looking for LEGAL free to cheap (under $50?) for some nice quality good sound kits.

Mainly looking for drums, not audio clips (making beats, not a DJ).

also i had this theory, but correct me if im wrong. i was thinking that since i haven't made too many breaths (about 8-12) that if i just continue breathing in and out, time and time again, that i'll get better? like the saying goes " repetition is the mother of learning" lol. would this be true for air flow? what do you think?

Kinda want a Rough outline contrasting to what others doing other genera of music are using, not that it will be necessarily different but then again it kinda is being that we tend to emphasize certain things a little differently...

Recommendations on a good master quality limiter plug would also be appreciated! Thanks..

I'm trying to analyze the mix on this song and I need to answer the following questions for an assignment of mine and was wondering if I could get some help. My main questions are that I'm not great at identifying if a mix is wet or dry and the effects used. How do I know if things are really compressed or not?

Is the mix wet or dry? Can you hear the effects at all and do you think that this track very compressed?

I use Logic Pro, and someone asked me to do a sort of "Rap Battle" song for him, cause he's doing some rap battle video. I thought making like an epic hiphop/orchestral thing would fit well with that. Now, I dont usually really make epic hiphop, so I been trying to find the right "sound" that it usually has.

So far, what I have is:

A lot of instruments playing
trumpets have an important role
staccatto "angelic" choir or long, "epic" choir
high strings are important too

Anyone else got any tips for getting the right "sound" for epic hiphop?

Limiting and loudness help!

Ok so basically this is my first post here, and i signed up as i have some issues with my production that are constantly getting on my nerves and i joined in the hope that some dudes with more experience and knowledge than me can help me answer them!

The first one that is constantly is on my mind is to do with volume and limiting.

I make Jazz influenced hip hop music and recently i have been struggling to keep up with the loud volumes set by many electronic producers in today's game and i just want to know HOW they do it. How do they make their tunes so loud yet keep the sound so clean? is it to do with the quality of the limiter/compressor or does it get that loud before they have even begun the limiting process?. I was also wondering what's the best way to approach making your tracks "loud" with regards to electronic music and hip hop. Do you do it during the mastering process or is it done beforehand?

I would really appreciate it if you could have a listen to a new production of mine (attached), and give me some tips. Do you think it sounds too squashed and should i stop trying to push it so hard or is it ok? because as of now this is the loudest i can possibly make my tunes and it still isnt as loud as some commercial releases, so id really appreciate the help in giving me some tips! Obviously i realise music is not all about volume but this is simply an aspect of my production that i wanna get up to scratch.

Cheers! :)

I'm attaching two audio samples of what I'm asking about from a song called 'Beam Me Up' by Cazzette.

I've been hearing a lot of this 'sound', especially in EDM music, where usually a snare drum starts speeding up and pitching up.

I'm sure the speeding up I'm referring to is just the way the snares were programmed but the pitching up is what I'm really curious about.

Does anyone have any tips on how to achieve this in Pro Tools and/or Logic? Can it be done in Pro Tools? I'm going to assume it definitely isn't achieved with vari-fi in PT.

In the audio clips I am attaching, one of the clips does what I'm referring to with not only the vocal's delay but then again with a synth (kind of in the background). The other audio clip is doing this with a synth sound as well.

So how is it done, any videos or explanations? Is it achieved the same way for vocals, synths, snares, or whatever sound you would pick?

Thanks.

But when it comes to my own vocals I can't never get it the way I want them! Could it be my interface? I use a akai eie pro USB. Should I get FireWire? Would that make a difference? Am I just to hard on myself? Has anyone else have this problem? My chain is neumann tlm 193 into a presonus eureka into a lexicon vocal processer to the akai interface.

They are the AKG K 240's for $100 does anyone have any experience with these? Or any other suggestions around this price. I need to upgrade my headphones for my home studio to something with better bass response. I notice when I produce on my current ones I don't hear much bass then when I turn the monitors on Crazy bass.

I'm trying to delve into making more anthemic type of progressive style hip-hop beats.

What are some good chords or KEYS to study/fiddle with to get that real anthem style sound using luscious synths similar to the songs below.

There's something about the progressions in these following songs that the chords just scream ANTHEMIC and EXUDE this LARGER THAN LIFE feeling:

Kanye West - Champion - YouTube
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6E2AV1lqdOg

Juega como Messi -- adidas - YouTube

I have a very sibilant voice and I'm willing to buy a vocal chain for tracking my own rap vocals. The main issue I always had with my voice is the very strong sibilance. Not only with the "ss" around 7k range but the "ts" and "ch" at around 2.8k or so...

I've tried any mic / pop filter placement with any settings you can imagine with a newmann u87 -> avalon 737 -> digi003 chain that I've been tracking on a friend's studio.

Maybe the AD is important here also, since I'm tracking with a 003. I'll upgrade my interface probably to a RME Fireface UFX.

Unfortunately I can't demo any gear in my city. Actually I'll have to buy it overseas.

Some gear I've been thinking about is:

Shure SM7-B Mic

Manley Mono Mic Preamp

Empirical Labs EL8x Distressor

DBX 160A

I've been quantizing everything since the first time I saw a DAW, which up till now has been fine since I mostly do electronic material.

However, I just got into an artist called Flume, and their songs have this amazing laid back groove.. and I *cannot* seem to get remotely close to it myself. Check out 0:59...

I can get pretty close if I play the beat using a drum machine or midi keyboard and don't quantize it. Obviously, once I quantize, regardless of swing setting, etc (I've tried groove quantize packs for Logic... MPC... various drum machine templates), it loses it's groove.

My first question is, and this may sound naive, but how do producers using modern DAWs deal with beats like this? Even the kick seems like it's off grid, so looping gets difficult... Do you make it so the first kick starts exactly off grid, and then loop after x bars?

Second, and this may be borderline wrong to ask but I'm curious - can you make quantize grids for Logic that would work to this? I tried making one by using Convert to Sampler Instrument on a looped section of that song (and then doing make groove template). However, it doesn't *quite* sound right...

If the answer to the quantize grid question is yes, are there groove template packs online that have awesome laid back feels like this?

happy mother day guys..

Recently been really digging Truly Yours 2 by J. Cole. I really like anything he puts out, especially production wise.

This is the song I am wondering about: J. Cole - Kenny Lofton (ft Young Jeezy) (Truly Yours 2) - YouTube

My questions are pretty simple, but I feel as if the elements in this track are all on point!

A few things I was wondering - This snare/clap combination really pops so well, it seems like it's the loudest sound in the track, I am wondering what you think they did to get it to pop so well..

Second thing is the sub bass! When i listen on my monitors it is the PERFECT level within the track, and to me it seems like with how loud the other elements are that is pretty great they were able to get the sub bass to fit so well. In my opinion I hear a lot of mid-range that might make it poke through so well. Thoughts?

The next thing I really liked was the hi-hat on the track, it is very live sounding to me and compliments the drums very well. I find it really hard to find hi-hat sounds that flow well and sound natural with live-type drums, do you think these drum sounds are all from the same kit?

Just wanted a few people to chime in on what they thought...really loving Canei Finch/J.Cole combo!

Hi people,

I have a strange question perhaps... I have Logic 8, an MPC2500, and an audio interface with 8 ins and outs.

What I want to do is record the output of Logic into the MPC, tweak the sample in the MPC, and at the same time have the audio outs of the MPC going back into Logic (and then out to the monitors).

Would there be a way to do this in such a manner (using all these audio interface outputs) that I don't get feedback and blow my speakers/headphones/eardrums?

(The audio interface is an M-Audio FastTrack 8r)

Thanks!

in the intro you can hear the effect best:
note - I tried iZotope Trash2, but it seemed way too harsh and just totally mangled the drums, maybe I was using it wrong I dno tho.

Okay first I will talk about my signal chain!

I'm using an SM7B going into an RME FF400!

The way I'm mixing it is one performance but on 3 different tracks!

One centered, then two hard panned left and right! The hard panned vocals are EQ'd differently.

Then I send my vocals to two aux's hard panned left and right but I pitch them down some cents then blend em until it doesn't sound robotic to add some thickness to it.

I like how my vocals sound but they do not sound "Professional." To me at all!

This song is a joke that me and a friend did.

The better performance is at 1:25 (Which is me hahahaha)
I recently found myself wasting a lot of valuable time messing around with different samples, rhythms etc in order to see how they sound. Saying this, I didn't get much accomplished. Do you guys hear a sample and immediately tell yourselves "this is a boom-bap joint" or a neo soul joint, a street joint etc and try to build it that way?

I have this song I'm working on and I want it to fade in from a sweeping low pass filter, but the EQ levels are horrible. Kicks too loud, hats too loud and too "high" Is it because I haven't added any effects to the Kicks and Hats yet? When I hear it in professional songs, the sweeps sound like they have the perfect EQ. Nothing louder than anything else. I've attached the part I'm talking about and how it sounds. I hope the attachment works.

This is actually a recent one of the plethora of tips I've posted on my facebook page. But it was a good one on a subject that comes up here often so I thought I'd copy/paste.

Tip: Methods for reference tracks while mixing

Everyone has heard about using reference tracks while mixing. You know, so you can compare your mix to that “benchmark hit record”. I’ve talked in the past about how I turn down a reference track to help me start my gainstaging and to facilitate better a/b comparisons. So I won’t revisit that. Instead, I’ll talk about three different techniques you can use when comparing your mix to the reference track(s). The three aren’t necessarily mutually exclusive; you can combine or switch between multiple techniques.

1) We’ll call this the copy-cat method. You find a killer record that sounds very very similar to the record you are working on and make that your reference. So it will have similar sounding drums, similar sounding vocalists, similar sounding bass, etc. You basically try and mix your record so that it sounds as close as possible to that record. The upside to this technique is that you have something very concrete to go after. The downside is that you can spend forever trying to find a song that matches yours and even then, nothing will match perfectly. And there’s always the possibility that at the end of the day, the sound of that reference track really ISN’T appropriate for your song or artist. Nevertheless, the ability to compare apples to apples, so to speak, makes this a viable approach and one that is great for beginners who, through lack of experience, have a hard time sussing out the subtles of records. If nothing else, it’s also great practice for honing skills at any level of experience.

2) Let’s call this the dissection method. You may have seen Dave Pensado allude to this on his program. You grab a record that has a vocal you love, a record with a kick you love, a record with the width you love, etc. Gather all these different songs, each with a different “perfect” element and sort of combine them all into one giant super mix. As you are mixing your record, you check your snare against the reference track with the killer snare sound, you check your lead vocal against the record with the killer lead vocal, and so on. The upside to this technique is that you don’t have to find one perfect record for your reference because you are essentially building a collage from multiple references, each with their own strength. The downside is that it’s easy to lose the big picture by focusing too much on individual elements and ignore how they work together.

3) I’ll call this the zen meditation method because I use this method the most and everyone always says how I’m all zen and hippy-dippy about how I approach mixing. In this method you get a couple of records that are very loosely and generally in the same ballpark as your record. I think of it as though they are songs that would wind up on the same playlist in someones mp3 player. So if I’m mixing an uptempo pop/r&b jam, I’ll grab a couple uptempo pop/r&b jams to reference where I think the mixes are solid. I don’t worry at all about making my mix match those. Instead, as I’m mixing, I ask myself, “if someone was listening to those songs in their playlist, or on the radio, and my song suddenly came on, would it feel out of context or would it just roll along?” (or for those of us old enough to remember compilation CDs, “if my record were on a compilation with these other songs, would it fit in seamlessly, or would it be out of place?”). The idea behind this method is that in reality, no two mixes are alike. Further, there is no genre-dependent industry standard. You can take the two highest charting rap songs on Billboard and compare them only to discover that they have radically different amounts of low end and radically different perceived levels for the lead vocal. Is one right and the other wrong? No, one was #2 on Billboard and the other was #4 and you’d be happy to have mixed either! Same thing goes for rock, folk, country, ANY genre. So instead of comparing your mix to the reference(s) on a technical level like in 1 and 2 above, you are comparing more on a psychological level. Because the reality is that this is how the consumer will be evaluating your mix. And like I always say, I don’t give a f*ck what other engineers think of my mixes - I care about what the tone deaf consumers think of my mixes because they are 99.9% of the record buying population! The big upside to this method is that you are evaluating the mix as a whole in a context that makes sense from a consumer listening standpoint, and you have total freedom to do whatever you want creatively without sacrificing your ability to compare to a reference. The downside is that it requires a lot of experience and if you aren’t good at switching between the big picture and the microscoping brush strokes, you can wind up careening your mix off a cliff before you know it.

As I said, these are not mutually exclusive and you CAN combine. Although I overwhelmingly use the third method, I will often use the second for certain spot checks, particularly when I’m nervous. For example, if I’m having a hell of a time getting a snare to sound right, I might dig around for a similar song with a killer snare sound so I have something to shoot for (even though I might not want to wind up exactly in the same place). Or if I’m particularly nervous about the amount of sibilance in the lead vocal, I might dig up a song by a similar sounding singer and compare. So you can in fact mix and match, combine, stir or even buss (lol) these different methods.

For ex... say a producer is working with an artist.

Producer made so and so beat in their own studio.

Are the stems of the beat given to the artist's engineer who then mixes the stems intricately? Tweaks 808s, makes them fuller, EQs synths, snare, kick, etc. Overall makes the beat sound way better than how it came in.

Or is it the instrumental used how the producer mixed it? I'm assuming there are plenty of producers who make great music but can't mix on a professional level.

Music on the radio is damn near perfect. Did the producer mix the beat so well, or are the stems given to a professional who really turns the beat into audible gold?

I'm mainly referring to major label stuff because I'm sure there are cases where the producer's 2 track mix is used.

When producing music with 808s, is there a preferred key signature to use for the 808s to really knock?

I've read that certain keys allow the 808 to really cut through in terms of frequencies... The 808 may not be audible in one key but in another it may really resonate and hit hard.

I know this probably dives into mathematics and what not. I'm just curious if it's actually of any relevance to consider this when producing music with 808s or if it is irrelevant.

Any insight on this?

Also, any advice on getting the 808 and kick to sound like one, is this just a matter of finding a kick that meshes with your 808 so it sounds as if it's one kick with a huge decay?

Hey all,

I have a bunch of 808 samples.

I'll throw one into Kontakt and tune it alongside a piano so I can play it to the song's key.

However, even though I specifically make each note's velocity exactly the same, some of the notes are hitting louder than others.

Some of the 808s are hitting lower frequencies considering bass lines are usually playing different notes.

So for example, one 808 may be playing the note of C1 while the next one may be F1. The C hits much lower in pitch, LOUDER in volume, and deeper audibly and the F hits higher in pitch and lower in volume. But they are the same velocity.

Why is this? Professional records with 808s have consistent bass lines in terms of volume. Even though some 808s hit higher in terms of pitch, they aren't hitting lower in volume as they are in my case.

What is the issue here?

Referring to digital production. If you have tons of samples of toms where you don't know what "note" they are, you then pick one and implement it into one of your instrumentals, do you tune the tom so you can play it inside of the song's key?

I'm mainly referring to tom 'drops' at the end of a measure when you hear the descending pattern.

And I don't mean tune by your ear... I'm talking about the initial tom you pick, do you tune it to the note of a C and then play the tom as a note that corresponds with your song?

Or, do you just pick any random tom sample and just rock with it and not worry about 'tuning' the sample to your song?

For snares, hi hats, etc. I would say most people just pick a sound and go with it. Is it the same for toms, or are they tuned to a song?

Assuming that if you do tune this initial tom sample to your song, when it descends for that transitional effect it is probably going to be leaving the key you are in, is this correct?

Am I over-thinking this, do people just randomly pick tom samples that sound good with their track and then automate the pitch in a descending matter?

I'm also asking in regards to other similar sounds, cowbells, etc. Basically, when do you tune a sound so you can play the sample as a note inside the song's key?

Thanks.

Sound I'm referring to kicks in for the first time at 31 seconds and once again at 35 seconds (it appears throughout the song consistently).

It sounds like pitch bending, I'm really referring to way the sound kicks in initially, it's got a certain sliding feel to it.

How is this achieved, is it manually via the pitch wheel? It sounds perfect. If they did it manually, do you think it was tweaked in the DAW to achieve the perfection or did the producer just nail the performance?

Or is the sound sliding the way it is because of a setting on wherever the synth was coming from?

Thanks for any insight.

I would be hyping the Great River a lot to say that my voice sounds way better than the 003. It honestly sounds pretty much the same. I've been making music for almost 10 years, in a treated room with Yamaha HS10 speakers.

Using a KEL HM7u mic, plugging the great river into input 5 so I know I'm not touching the Pre's on the 003.

I don't care, I mean I always wanted a "quality" preamp.... but I'm not really noticing much of a difference, not 1200 dollars worth at least.

However now I have found this site which offer Pro Tools to students at a discount of 66% totalling £165.99! cheaper than logic as well!
I was wondering if it is too good to be true and if anyone has experience with this site? And if this is the full version of Pro Tools 10

Sup guys

I am a total newbie when it comes to producing, coming from a dj'ing background and the ability to keyboard. I would like to mainly produce sample influences rnb/hip hop , with clean synths and drums, unlike the gritty sounding boom bap early 90s east coast stuff;
i.e
J Stalin Mayback ft Philthy Rich - Play Witcha - YouTube

Armani Depaul - Something New (prod. Domino) [Thizzler.com Exclusive] - YouTube

I was deliberating between gettin an mpc 2000xl/mpc 3000 and Native Instrments maschine. I think im leaning towards going with maschine just for the fact that i find components of the mpc such as floppy drives and having to import and export samples etc across multiple platforms. I just want to make a layerd sequenced clean sounding track without too much brain power staring at screens constantly or having to have an engineering background. Thats primarily why i want some form of hardware to supplement the fact i cant completley escape software in this day and age.

The next thing im looking for my needs is a keyboard wich will allow for production/normal keyboard play and is of good qaulity for around £300 which is like $500

I basically want a clean set up of keyboard, production hardware such as mpc or maschine, good monitors a good piece of straight forward software and laptop. I dont want cumbersome analog equipment and bridges that arent required. Like the picture example
I've been rocking to channel orange by frank ocean for a while now, and have come to realize just how good the production is on that album. Each beat is so organic, and I feel it's the best produced album I've heard for some time.

I was wondering if you guys had any details on the production. I know Frank did a lot of the production on the album, and there weren't many samples used. Does he use live instruments or Midi? What is his process when making the beats? any of this will help. I know this question is pretty vague, but I would love to know any details on how he put this album together. Anything you guys know would help, even just speculation.
Well how would you, in a way, let them off gently. You know, without hurting their feelings and all hahaha. Could be good friends or your fans, but you don't want to disrespect them. Still would want them in your music videos and to be on good terms with you. From the average type of people to cats from the hood.
Bwahahah, not scared by any means, just would like to keep on good terms.

What's up GS? I don't know if this is the appropriate place to post this, but anyways, here goes..

I'm looking to take my music from my humble home studio, to a "real" professional studio. I have fun making music, but I'm at the point where Im dying to hear what my music would sound like with time and money invested into doing it right.

Honestly, I feel like it takes me forever to mix our music and get a sound that I like. I end up feeling like I'm settling and never really happy with the end result. I want to hear what me and the other rapper in my duo's voices would sound like through a top notch chain, and with engineers behind the boards who know what they are doing.

Having to attempt to engineer our music is extremely sidetracking and slowing down my growth as an artist myself. It would be nice to focus on writing and working on delivery, both in the booth and on the stage, and not have to worry about the headaches I'm having to deal with so far.

So far, we dont charge anything for our music. We are more concerned with getting our name out there and making a buzz. What I'm looking for, at this point, is simple 2track mixes. Recording vocals over instrumentals and getting the best results that we can. Unfortunately, most of the instrumentals we end up with are 2tracks and usually already compressed/limited.

Since I dont have tracked out instrumentals, I'm not expecting to sound exactly like what I hear on the radio, but Im confident that the professionals out there can do a much better job than I have been so far.

Our genre is rap/hip hop. If necessary, I can send a song of ours so you can get an idea of what we sound like.

I live in the LaSalle/Peru area in central Illinois. I tried googling, and even looking at the member directory services on the site, but I'm looking to reach out to as many people as I can from Illinois. Let me know if you can help me with what I'm looking for. Links to your studios' pages are obviously useful. Looking forward to your responses.

Anyway, I found some very familiar sounding presets, one of which I was very surprised by. Who'd have thought the genius that is (or so I thought) Polow Da Don used a practically un-tweaked preset for NaS's Hero beat. I was quite surprised by the A$AP preset too.

Hi everybody,

This is for the music producers and business entrepreneurs among us.

I hereby would like to open a conversation/thread about MUSIC PRODUCERS and one particular source of music-industry-income-stream; LIVE PERFORMANCE FEES.

So,.. I would like to know what you all think about the idea that music producers (who in this case is also an authors) should also get some percentage (%) of the Live/performance-income stream from artists. As far as I know this doesn't really happen yet. But maybe it isn't a bad idea, I mean, at a time where income on music sales isn't what it used to be, we (as producers) have to get/be creative about how to make money.

Record companies started with the 360-deals years ago, why can't we as producers make money on some more income-streams (from the artists); "live-performance" income for instance.

What do yall think??

I am trying to decide between the two devices, from what I hear the nektar panorama can do pretty much everything from the device but watching some videos of the maschine paired with its maschine software it seems to mimick the workflow of my old motif workstation setup (which I love) or what i can imagine people with mpc's would do. I am worried if I go with the maschine ill be limited soundwise as I'm not sure if the software can run any vst with the nektar I know I can just do everything in cubase but will not have that maschine workflow. I also love the layout of the maschine software. Can anyone shine some light on this or possibly give other suggestions. I was going to use either of these in tandem with an 81 key motif es 8 as a midi keyboard so all the instrumental melodies will be handled on there for the most part.

Do anyone on here knows more about the pitch shift on the ASR-10? I use my asr-10 as a slave and my mpc as a master. I was watching a video on youtube where you can play the sample in different pitches to speed it up or slow it down to find the tempo instead of using the timestretch mode on it. Afterwards, you can go to the FX select section and go to pitch shift to find the right tone or pitch of the sample. When i tried the pitch shift on my asr, the sample sounds cloudy and muddy like. I messed with the fx and filters and everything and i still don't know what the hell is going on. Idk if it's a manufacture problem with my asr or if I'm doing something wrong. The guy 3rd Degree on youtube was doing this method and his sample sounded crystal clear. Can someone solve this problem for me?

I'm considering the following:

- EZ Drummer

- Superior Drummer

- Addictive Drums

They all seem like great programs, but do any of you use one or the other or have another program that you favor for any reason in particular?

See I love working with producers, and collabing with them. The one problem I see is not knowing how to fix this really quickly with out copy and pasting each pattern and then deleting out the other stuff.

How does one clean this up to the point of arrangement?

This is an example of what I'm talking about.

I got something in my head:

So I'm working completely OTB. Since I can afford only a handful of nice high end EQs and compressors, I was thinking. I'm using an s950, what if I just EQ, compress, and use effects when needed when I'm sampling into the 950? The EQs on my mixer are shit btw. (I'm getting a very good line mixer without eqs) So I'll just need one of each instead of having to spend a shitload of money on processing to put on every channel. This would be already kind of defining mixdown in the sense that everything will already be processed when moving the faders on my mixer and midi sequencing everything. All of the low end will go into kicks and bass. Every other sample I will cut the lows and highs, so I will create room for bass and kicks. This does mean I will print the processed samples in 12 bit.. So my compression will be 12 bit, my effects will be 12 bit, and my EQ.. I guess this defeats the idea of high end recording?

So how about this?

My goal is to get the best sounding sync to the DAW metronome.

Do you use recording offset and/or how often to you readjust audio that is laid down?

It seems like both are valid methods depending on other factors, but I'm thinking less is more so I have been using the Roland as the master but I am considering all opinions about changing that.
thanks for insight and cheers

It might just be me but i feel like reason is never really loud enough or just feels "tiny". I've been using reason for a awhile but i feel like i cant get my drums like i want them ever especially when i try to make trap beats. Is it Just me or does anyone feel the same. I love reason so if anyone can give me advice or answers that would be great because i feel like stuff i hear in Fl studio (specifically the drums or low frequencies) sound a lot better then mine and even when i make something simple in FL i can here it. Maybe Reason 6 or 6.5 sound better im not sure because im using reason 5.

After using FL Studio for 6 years, I only found out last year that the knob on the mixer channels is for stereo separation(i.e. making the track mono). I thought is was for panning. Don't judge.

I was thinking about it, and should be fun...

I know there were some comparison threads....but I was thinking of doing a bigger one?

Basically, have one person sample a drum break and a 1 bar sample of some instrumentation, maybe without drums. Like a 1 bar soul sample or whatever...into their DAW, wav or flac, then send it to whoever has a sampler they want to compare...then we get all the samples and run it down the line...

What I can offer.

EPS-16
Emax I
S612
Mirage
SP-505
MPC 2000XL

The Mirage and S612's sampling time will definitely be an issue. So maybe we can do a one shot comparison for a few of them too or what not.

So that's the link to a song i recently recorded, mixed and mastered on. I use an MXL Genesis Condenser Mic, Focusrite 2i2, an acoustic vocal shield, Krk 8400s(for now, i'm planning on buying Yamaha hs80's when i feel comfortable enough to throw down the money), Ableton Live 9, Fab Filter's Desser and Waves Desser are both on my vocals... and they did a lot to lower the s' sound but.. there is still an annoying scatter high frequency noise that I WANT TO GET RID OF COMPLETELY!! ... without dulling down the tone of my high's

Also, it seems like i got rid of the beggining S sounds completely, but the ending s and t sounds seem to still linger a bit. I just want those gone completely.

Any advice?

I've been considering getting a compressor and slowly built a home studio, just curious, could i run my mic through the compressor into my interface and into my computer fine?

because my mic has a power box and doesnt require phantom power. I saw alot of forums saying certain mics would need to go into the interface first for power reasons and then mentioning ad converters and shit that confused me, but i dont need the phantom power. Yeah, just wondered.

i going to get this Behringer MDX4600 Proxl Multicom: Amazon.co.uk: Musical Instruments

Okay so I don't have any professional experience with audio engineering so bare with me. I've been using Fl studio's to make beats and I've never been able to achieve the crisp 808 sound that I hear on the mixtapes, cd's and stuff on the radio etc. I've researched the basics of mixing and I understand that you have to have the 808 operating in the low end and you have to cut out the bs on the ends to give it room to shine. (I usually use the 30hz preset on panometric e2 and try to cut out the parts that aren't glowing until I have a raw 808 vibration) However, I find that no matter how long I try and eq using panometric eq 2 or w.e I cannot achieve a crisp/clear 808. The 808's I have created seem to shake the house but you cant really hear it, it's like a really low frequency and it gets outshined by the other instruments. i'm trying to get an 808 similar to "Tat's on my arm" - Wale, or "RWT" -Big Sean. I've also read a lot of posts on here about using good quality sound font or sample, I think I've got a good couple samples to work with but if anyone had a kit or something I could use that would be awesome! or i'd be up to making my own if I knew how, if anyone had a link to a how to make an 808.(I've been all over youtube for like a year, can't find anything that's helped me solve this) btw I've tried compressing using the fruity compressor or w.e but it seems like that makes the frequency lower and louder, thus shaking my house more and waking my roomates up, but I can't even tell its that loud. HEEEEEELLLP MEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!

I'm having trouble choppin' a perfect 4 bar loop tho.
I think this is because the tempo is fluctuating in the range of 1 bpm since it's live.
How do you guys handle this?

I rarely ever sample so I'm not a pro chopper.
Any advice?

I'm using Maschine btw... and it kinda sucks tbh. It seems easier to just chop in PT.

I have recently started to use V-Comp Plugins on my mixes and was looking for some help or suggestions from others on vocal settings to start out with. As of right now My Mic I'm using is AT404 goes into GA Pre73.

My Sound coming in is real nice and clean Raw.
This is my plugin chain for the main vox
1. V-COMP Compressor
2. V-COMP 3BAND EQ
3. Wave R-comp Desser
4. Double tap delay
5. Waves L2 Just a touch to bring up the volume a little not much but just barely.

My track volume is down to -1.9 or so to Mix with the beat when I'm ready etc.

My back up vocals are same chain without double tap and L2.

I am a big fan of Neve hardware and maybe one day with the right money I can get the hardware vs. the plugins. So, this is what I'm working with now. Is anybody a expert so to speak working with V-Comp that can help me with a great starter on settings for the Compressor and EQ? Something to start out with etc. I'm still learning but, I'm loving the sound so far but I'm struggling for vocals to get a great setting for both of those plugins. Can anybody Help me out with these two for me to start out with etc.

I thank you for your time.

Hi guys new to the forums and just starting to build my home studio this site is awesome. I have been doing research for a couple weeks now and wanted to know if this vocal chain sounds good for a Vintage sound. Haven't figured out which compressor I would need although.
Also if you guys could perhaps offer any other set ups similar to this one? Or perhaps I can't even get the sound I'm looking for with this vocal chain? Any and all Help would be greatly appreciated.

Will be using Pro Tools 10 on PC

for example the sound on "you ain't a killer" By Big Pun. I like that scratchy vinyl sound I know that it's on the beat but w/e he's using lays well with the vinyl sound.

this is the chain: SM7B > Golden age Pre 73 > MOTU Ultralite-mk3.
I was also wondering if this chain would go well with
The Studio Projects C1 microphone?

if i forgot anything just ask or if you need more info to come up w/ a better answer or w/e no worries I don't get all touchy.
You must be schooled to learn I say ablian

I am getting back into the producing game and trying to move into the software coming from a previously all analog setup with a motif and a few other devices. I've been out so long after I got done setting up cubase and some vsts I come to find my old mbox 1 is useless so i guess i need to upgrade. I just want a soundcard that will let me run my vsts (native etc) in cubase I may also use maschine later on and I can hook up a mic or a guitar possibly later on. I know I can use my onboard computer soundcard but I want something better than that.

Hey fellow gearslutz.

I'm in big trouble economicly, i'm currently studying and i misunderstood the payment system. Long story short, i need to make about 700 dollars a month for June, July and August. So about 2000 in total through 3 months.

I'm depseratly looking for a Job, but we have problems in Denmark with minimum jobs, and it's close to impossible to get hired with no education.

So i'm currently just thinking about every possible option, if i won't find a job. I can't and won't take a loan in the bank, lend from friends or family.

One thing that comes to my mind is selling beats, i'm alwyas working my ass off in the studio, and i think lately i've been able to produce something that people might wanna throw a 40-50 dollars after.

I got no experience with websites and settings things up, so i'm kinda just thinking about selling my beats on those "Beat Selling Platforms", i know that i won't make 700 dollars a month on that, but i just need everything i can get atm.

You have any advice on beat selling, which sites will give me the best opportunity ? I don't mind paying a few bucks to get a user or something like that, i'm just desperate.

my question is im trying to make a home rap studio to record and edit my vocals so they can be added to a beat.
I would like to make beats eventually but that's a question for another day.

ATM i have a USB AT2020 Mic and i record directly to Adobe Audition and edit the vocals there.

Overall the outcome sounds decent when all said and done, but i know it can better.
I was wondering what other equipment i should invest in to make everything just overall sound better.
I also don't know to much about other items i have done my fair share of research but its hard when you don't know what your looking for.

So any suggestions and advice and details and any other type of advice or whatever would be greatly appreciated. Thank you :)

i am looking at a jj audio mic as, i in no way can afford a sony. right now im looking at a jj audio greyhound with the jj transformer. i know jj has other mics modded, but what mic would you recommend? i am going to buy it from front end audio as i dont want to send a mic in.i can just buy the modded mic and have jj audio get it.

which ones do you prefer to sound good for a variety of voices? specifically rap and singing? i have a audio technica at4040 and i feel that my voice isnt right for this mic. it does sound good but not enough for me to keep using it.

EDIT: i dont see to many sound tests from home studios with only lower end to mid grade gear with no proper booth, so thats why i decided to ask

I'm after some advice from the community here if I may. Any responses would be greatly appreciated.

I am a 25 year old UK based producer and I have been producing music in my home studio for a few years now. I feel confident in the music I produce and believe I can produce and write music which is at a professional level.

I have a SoundCloud page and an official website showcasing myself and my music but I'm struggling to find/do the next step which can progress my music to the 'next level' and get myself noticed hopefully by decent artists who are willing to collaborate or in an ideal world a label who would consider signing me as a producer so being a producer could be day job.

I've contacted some majors, independent labels, producer management companies with minimal success and the process just feels like I'm on a never ending spamming mission. I've searched the net for upcoming talented artists and have contacted many with most not replying. My experience with unsigned artists has been mainly negative, the majority seem to think they are stars signed to a major label already and have the attitude to go with it.

As already mentioned, if anyone has any info they can give me which can point me in the right direction I would really appreciate it.

Thanks :)

Greetings!
I've been reading Mixerman's "Zen and the Art of mixing" and now i am confused about panning. He is talking about LCR-panning (i.e. panning most of your stuff either hard left, center or hard right) but there are
two problems that often occur when i try to use LCR-panning in my mixes:
1. Stereo turns to mono when panned hard. This means i would lose all my stereowidth when panning a melody hard left or right.
2. The second problem is the balance between hard left and hard right. If i pan sth. hard left, i need sth. similar panned hard right, otherwise the mix seems unbalanced.

So it seems the best candidates for being panned hard right or left would be percussions that are already in mono. But then i would need two percussion elements so that one can be panned right and the other left for the balance of the mix.
But what to do if i don't have percussions in my track or only one percussion-element?

How can i make full use of hard right/left panning but still keep a wide stereo-panorama and still keep the mix balanced?
How would you pan these kind of mixes?

1. (drums, bass,) vocals, melody
2. (drums, bass,) vocals, two melodies
3. (drums, bass,) melody
4. (drums, bass,) two melodies

5. my current project: (kick, snare, hihat, bass,) pad, vocal sample (a oneshot with lots of reverb and delay on it; used like a pad in the background), two melodies and rap-vocals

I'd be happy to get some help from you! Thanks!
