Hi all. Have any of you heard PJ Harvey's 4 track demos? I read somewhere that she recorded these on a Yamaha MT1X, which means that they are cassette demos. This album is wicked awesome, and as demos for Rid of Me, it completely blows the Steve Albini produced Rid of Me out of the water.

My thing is....this is approximately the exact lo-fi production values I am wanting. Gritty and raw. I've always found the diy approach most appealing. The idea that this is being made in someone's bedroom or wherever is really exciting. But I find that other 4 track releases by other artists usually don't sound nearly as good PJ's. Anyone have any insight as to why that is? I just mean that they sound clear and achieve everything you would want to achieve with this kind of music(as evidenced that the Albini recordings are less interesting aside from the fact that they have drums).

Also, when recording on a 4 track, does recording less instruments make for the ones that are recorded to sound better? As they are less compressed on the tape or whatever? I'm don't know what I'm talking about sorry..... I want to record similarly to how her demos sound, but with drums(which she has on some tracks). Anyones interest would be awesome!

Hey guys,

I make dance tracks what means they need powerful, punchy and deep bass drums. So I'm curious how to sculpt my own bass drums that gonna be pitch perfect and fitting the track right?

I've tried to make such thing:
1. take the drum which is not in the pitch with the track but fits well due to its shape and kill with EQ its basic frequency so I have the drum without the low end - that gonna be the shape of the kick
2. sculpt of a bass synth shape of the bass drum with the frequency I need - that gonna be the low tail of the kick
3. make a powerful click with enough low end in it - that gonna be transient of the kick.
Then match the 3 parts together.

The result was nice but it still is not so tight\powerful as kicks I hear in commercial tracks by Above&Beyond for example. How to make it sound powerful (but not distorting)?

Hey guys, I'm looking for a cheap MULTI-PATTERN LDC mic to use on a variety of sources, though primarily acoustic guitar. I want to get a multi pattern so I can do M/S recording with the figure 8 and play around with omni for room miking, close up acoustic miking, etc. I also want something different from my GAP FC1.

I'm really strongly leaning towards the Studio Projects b3 but I know there's other stuff out there, the AT2050 in particular.

Would I be well off with the B3 or should I stretch to the 2050 or is there something else?

This is a theoretical question.. and I'll admit it may be a stupid one... but this is the weird stuff I think about on a Friday morning.

In terms of interface I/O, ADAT converters, preamps, EQ's... the whole nine... things are constantly being updated and "improved".

At what point is "sonic improvement" no longer possible in your opinion? Marketing companies will of course argue against this so they can continue to sell you a product that is 10 times better than their last product, but... at what point can things just not get any better.... but just sound different?

I'm aware it's possible this is a flawed question... b/c "better" is super-subjective. But... just in general... it's hard to argue against the fact that most of these newer interfaces indeed sound "better" than interfaces on the market 10 years ago. So... at what point do you think an interface can no longer sound "better"?

I'm using interface as the main example... but didn't want to limit it to just interfaces.

:::::EDITED AROUND POST #18:::::

Another way to pose it is.... the gear that was made during the 1990s and 2000s is regualrly labelled at "inferior quality" to the stuff they've come out with in the late 2000s to present, on a general basis. IE... People will say that the original MBox and Digi 001 sound like hot garbage compared to MBox 3 and Avid Omni.

So.... in 10-20 years from now... will we be saying that Mbox3 and Avid Omni sound like hot garbage compared to Mbox 15 and Avid Omni X sound? Or.... are we at the limit?

There... i think i finally posed the question correctly.

Alright, I need some advice. Here's my situation:

In my free time, I try to write some pop-punk-rock stuff. I'd like to try and do my own singing on it. I've been working with FL Studio, recording guitar directly into the computer, and the bass and drums are plug-ins.
As I haven't had a microphone, I've sort of just used my imagination when it comes to the vocal lines, sometimes using a piano or synth as sort of a stand-in to get an idea of how it sounds.

As for the interface, on my stationary computer I've used an Audiophile 24/96 soundcard, and on my laptop I've just used the built-in soundcard, which obviously isn't optimal.
Now, I'd like to start actually singing, to see how the melody works, and maybe if I should consider looking for another vocalist :P
As for the quality I seek... Well, I usually tell myself my ideas are recordings that I'll eventually present to a few musicians I know, and we'll try to do a proper recording. So basically just demos I can show off. But honestly, I'd like to reach a quality where I can sort of release the stuff. Obviously not as a proper album, but at least just something to put on a band website, without people instantly noticing that it's far from professional.

So, here's my plan. I mean to get an RME Babyface, which I suppose will be a decent upgrade of preamps. The question then, is, which mic do I get?

I realize there's plenties of threads on the general subject, and I've done my share of googling, but I figured you guys might have an idea of which of my current candidates best fits my specific situation :)

Initially I was thinking a Shure SM58, cheap and simple, and maybe add a Rode NT1A. After some further reading, I decided maybe it was better not to skimp on a mic, so I figured maybe I could spend a little more and go for an SE4400a, as it seems to be a good affordable all-rounder.

So my question is, is the SE4400a more than I need? As I said, it's mainly just vocals, but I might also try to record my electric guitar with it, to get a bit more oomph than with Guitar Rig. What I mean is, would my money be better spent on something meant for my specific purpose, than an all-rounder?
Apparently the SE2200T is quite good for vocals and guitar, and costs less, would that maybe be a better buy for me?

I've decided to post a link to my soundcloud, where I've uploaded some ridiculous iPhone recordings of me singing, nothing fancy, I just sang a couple of songs I liked, not a lot of preparation. That way you get an idea of what my voice sounds like, and feel free to laugh.
Now, below that are a few examples of some songs I've made. These are just ideas that I've uploaded in order for myself to listen to at work, and think of further work I might do with them, lyrics or whatever. But this way you get an idea of the genre/sound I'm working with :)

Otacon's sounds on SoundCloud - Hear the world’s sounds

Okay, sorry if this thread turned too long and specific, and if I forgot some stuff that really matters, but any help from you guys would be sooo much appreciated! :)

Howdy, Thanks for stopping in
So I have been getting some great artists in my home studio recently, they are all having a great time and enjoying the finished product but I am slightly disappointed by my final mixes at times. I feel like they sound too "digital" and not a HIFI digital either. I have worked/four walled many studios over the past 4 years and kinda just stared getting some stuff for a home studio setup as seen in this thread. So I guess I'm spoiled by all the cool stuff in other studios and am wondering whats next in my chain?

Heres a gear list for ya.

Mics
2x bluebirds (OH/Acoustics)
ST69 tube mic(Vox/gtr)
3xsm57(toms/gtr)
SM52(kik/bass)

Outboard rack
Eleven rack
Art vla II
Art Mpa II
Art channel (broken/rackfiller)
8ch headphone amp

all running into a 3200 Out of alesis MK2 monitors (Ihatethem)
With PT 10
Windows 8
Rack computer with 25 gigs ram

So here is what I'm looking into...
- Start a lunchbox
- Black lion sparrow converter
- Ribbon pair to fix my harsh ass OH's (lackin in pre's though)
- New monitors
- Nice single outboard (comp pre or eq for bus)
- Rebuy all my cheap a$$ .25cent cables
Trying to stay around 1-2k for this update

I have a Tascam 32-2 and a few 7in and 10in reels of tape. Also have a Hand D Mag. Rarely used because I don't have room to keep it out. Always had dreams of lots of space where I could mixdown to it. Right now it's boxed away in the closet.

Sell or Keep?

I had 2-k2 mics in the shop to be upgraded with an electronics mod and a Capsule upgrade.

The electronics upgrade consists of replacing all of the electrolytics with low ESR capacitors, by passing the output capacitors with small film capacitors and upgrading the film capacitors. Also the power supply is upgraded with low ESR capacitors and by-pass capacitors.

The results of the mod is a smoother sound with more focused bass and mid range

The biggest difference was when the capsule was changed. I used our Amero K47 capsule that has a custom 47 backplate that we have assembled and custom skinned. The K47 has the low mid richness that you hear from the classic K47 and the signature smooth top end that that capsule is known for.

The tubes in these mic are E88CC made by "JJ" (not me)

The clips are Guitar 12" away at the 12th fret. The Vox clips are 8" away and the 2 capsules 2" apart and are centered in relation to the source.

Hey GS,

I have a tascam 424 mkII that I am finally getting around to cleaning and getting back into nice and sexy shape however I am having a little trouble understanding how to properly demagnetize the bastard.

I've read the best demag is the Han D Mag however I live in NZ and that thing doesn't seem to exist here. I do however have a demagnetizer called the Akai AH-20. There is very little about this thing available on the internet so I have no idea if it is good or not.

Now, doing as much reading as I can on demagnetizing I read that you want to turn it on really far away from the tape heads and then slowly approach them and get them close and wait and then slowly move back and turn the power off etc etc however the instructions given with this demagnetizer state that I should place the demagnetizer on the tape head and press the button. It will only be activated for 1 second before turning off because that is all that it will need. This makes what everyone has said you should do in terms of demagnetizing not possible.

What do you guys think? I wouldn't be too fussed if it wasn't for the fact people have said doing it incorrectly can **** up the tape heads by permanently magnetizing them or something along those lines and I really don't wanna make this beauty unusable.

Hope you guys can help and thanks in advance hooppie

So I've always been curious about bleed..I don't do a lot of recording (yet!) but I love reading about it and hearing tips and stories. Why is bleed so bad? If it's all in sync and happening at the same time (all the instruments/tracks), what difference does it make if one instrument bleeds into another mic? Maybe a phase thing? If someone would shed some light onto this, I'd appreciate it. jkthtyrt

Thanks everyone!

How low end is considered low end?

There's Behringer EQ's, DBX EQ's, and Manley EQ's... Where do you draw the line? There's also the "No EQ at all" option, of course, which is even more low end..

Same with all kinds of gear really.. You have Tascam/Fostex tape recorders and then you have Revox. Of course there's always no-name brand tape recorders as well.

What do you guys consider low end?

Is there a point in pricing, where it no longer makes a noticeable difference in sound quality, in your opinion? Like, a $5 microphone probably sucks when compared to a $300 microphone. But is there much difference between a $300 mic or a $3000 mic? How about a $3000 mic compared to a $30000 mic? When does adding zeros stop making a difference?

There's budget mixing desks, there's entry level mixing desks, there's professional mixing desks, and then there's mixing desks that cost more than my house, car and wife combined!

Assuming you run the same kind of audio through all of these mixers, where does it stop having a big audible difference?

There's fairly cheap products with amazing specs (on paper) and much more expensive products with lesser specs.

I've used extremely low end, low end, not-so-low-end, fairly-professional, and I am currently using mostly professional gear, with the odd bit of lo-fi, but still reasonably priced. Is this low end or not any more?

I have used the odd expensive bit of gear here and there, but was really not that impressed, considering the price. Then I'm seeing some $5000 compressors, and I wonder if it is really worth every penny over the pretty decent $500 compressor.

If you had the option to go really high end, how far would you go? Are you low end out of need, out of choice, or out of principle?

I am often asked if I use Neumann microphones in the recordings that I do, and stuff like that, by people in the industry (my work is often commercially released). I haven't even seen a Neumann up close. But I have no complains about the quality of sound with what I'm using. Would it make any difference to me or my customers if I actually had one or two of them? For the price of a pair of Neumanns, I could pretty much survive for a good couple of years with no income. For a price of a mastering compressor I could get by for 6 months to one year.

Is the really high end gear kind of like driving a brand new Cadillac versus driving an old soviet Lada? As in, they will both get you from A to B, but the Caddy will get you there faster, more comfortably, and in style, while the Lada will be slower, uncomfortable and unfashionable, but you will certainly have a lot more on the side for gas money if you haven't spent it all on buying the Caddy in the first place.. But with the Caddy, you will get noticed more.. Is that what it really comes down to? Being "noticed" for your equipment more so than for your sound, and maybe also making it easier/faster to reach a good result, which you could also reach with cheaper gear, but with more effort?

I mean, if I had a few million $$$, I would probably buy all the high end stuff just to try it out side by side to answer my question. But I don't.

Howdy
I know these are all over, so pardon me for making another one but I hope its enjoyable.

So I suppose I'll start with a gear list.
Mics.
Blue bluebird pair (OH/acoustic's)
St69 tube mic (vox)

Outboard
art vla
art mpa
art channel
eleven rack
8ch headphone amp

Windows 8 with pro tools 10.3
Running on 25gigs of ram Through my lovely 3200

Alesis mkII powered monitors

So here are my concerns as of now. I have a great amount of local artists coming by and loving the sound of what we create, but I feel like my mixes could be much better. I have worked/four walled in pro studio's for about 3 years and know what a great mix sounds like. I know this is a pretty low end place but its great for my artists and there budget.
I feel like my mixes sound pretty digital and fuzzy, and want a warmer yet HIFI sound.

Here is my list of what I am considering, obviously wanting more opinions as well.
-BLA sparrow converter
-New rack with lunchbox and nicer outboard
-(Hate my monitors) new monitors
-Trash all my .25 cent cables and change them ALL out
-More mic options

I like to do payment plans on my sweetwater card, thats how I obtained the DM. So I'm looking for a nice little 1-2k update here.
Thanks for your thoughts kfhkh

Hello out there. I recently started using a Yamaha MT4X that I acquired via ebay. I'm new to 4 track cassette recording and quite easily confused. When I playbook what I recorded it sounds almost inaudible even with the monitor turned to full blast. I've read the manual and can't figure out what the problem is. Is it supposed to be that way? The only thing I can think of is that it has to do with the tapes I bought. They are the standard Cr02 chrome tapes, but they are "fine". I'm not sure if that makes any difference. ANy help would be soooooooooo appreciated.

Hello folks,

I find my self in a very strange situation, hope someone could clarify some things... One year ago i have bought what initially i thought an EMU 1616M card... it was such a good price that I ignored all other sugestion (around 200 $)

Recorded few tracks, not so impressed, I just discovered that i was pretty ill informed when i bought it, i received an 1616 Dock (non M) along with the PCIe digital interface from an M version that goes to motherboard (on those times it used to be PCI). it's like having a hybrid... everything works, no problems, but i recently found out the 1616M has better preams and converters.

My questions are:
1. where are these converters placed? into the audio dock or into the digital part that goes to motherboard? could this hinder me in receiving better quality, should i buy an 1616M dock?
2. I plan a serious upgrade, i'm hunting a RME FF800, but after doing some researches there are many oppinions... Most people say the preamps from RME FF800 are good but not briliant, and they are not to be used on something serious like a main vocal or snare (please correct me if i am wrong) I realised that insted of spending a lot of money on a better soundcard, i should get a good preamp and converters.
I just came from a studio where i recorded some acoustic guitars, and that guy had RME ff800, a great river pre i think nv-1 and additional converters, it sounded awesome.

My aim is to produce music with live instruments, as a guitarist i need really good acoustic guitar sound and vocals. Probably tracking drums too, if needed, i use live samples mostly!

3. I am hunting also a Focurite ISA One or 428 MkII, both with converters. Would i get better results if i stick with my EMU 1616 and run the Preamp and converters via ADAT (i never used this feature). Will i be able to run for e.g. a ISA 428 via ADAT on my EMU or are incompatibilities issues? other sugestions???

4. If YES to quest no. 3, what converters should i buy, i know what a convertor is mosly but have little experience... they seem to play a critical role in the signal chain...

I have around 1500 USD to spend on a soundcard/preamp and converter, doesn't bother me if i get something second hand if i get what i pay for!

I know there are a lot's of questions, hope that people with more experience than me will be able to give me some sugestions before i spend my money on other crap... diddlydoo

Best regards, Marius

Hey there guys, so I'm working a new track and I want an acoustic tone that isn't brittle or wide.

My usual way of recording lush acoustic strumming sounds is to use my AT 4033 and my AT pencil mike then pan each one out separate ways. Not the best I know but it's the only mic's I have :)

For this song I think I want it to be mono and right up the center, I'll use some stereo reverb to widen it just a tad. Would blending my two mic sounds into a buss be the best way to achieve this? I like the brightness of the pencil and the darkness of the 4033.

Sorry if this is confusing, i just can't get the sound I want with the two mics panned out. It's too wide :)

Hi, folks.
I bought an Apogee One a year and a half ago as kind of an "emergency" audio interface. I had just purchased a Macbook Air and my old interface was firewire, so I needed a USB one quick.
I've been very happy with it, though have needed more inputs and am looking at other USB interfaces.
I'm hoping for a 4-in, 4-out interface, 2 bypassable preamps.
I'm also kind of on a budget as I'm going to grad school soon. Otherwise, I would buy an Apogee Quartet and be done with it. heh
The new Scarlett 6i6 looks perfect, and there aren't many other interfaces of that configuration that even exist (Presonus Aubiobox 44VSL and Native Instruments Komplete Audio 6 are the only ones I can think of).
I know that I can't expect the moon from stuff in this price range, but I'm hoping for something with relatively quiet preamps.
I'm wondering how much of this has to do with available gain and how much has to do with just the overall noise level of the circuitry.
For instance, the Apogee One has 63db of gain, but gets a little noisy at high gain. The existing Scarlett interfaces state 55db of gain, but I wonder if having an external power supply (as opposed to bus power on the One) helps keep the noise level down on the preamps.
I'm not necessarily using mics that need a ton of gain, but I am recording fairly quiet source material sometimes.
Suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

The thing is, I'm finding myself having to EQ in a lot of mids and highs to get not just these but most of the vocals that I track here to cut through the mix, so I'm wondering if I'm doing something wrong of if there is some other issue?

My chain is simple: vocal>AT2050>Focusrite Scarlett 8i6>Logic Pro

I just want to know if these raw vocals sound ok or are they too dark? This is file is completely unprocessed.

Recently got some HS50 monitors modded from Zenmod. Beautiful clear but def lacking in the bass department. I use A steinberg ur28m and it has some great monitor control options. Here is my question: Should i run the monitors thru the sub, or just put the output on another output that way i can activate the sub when i want/need it. On one side ive heard the sub can color the monitors, in the other end i do understand the crossover aspect of running the monitors thru the sub is easier. anyone with suggestions?

SN: I heard the monitors pre-modded and post modded. If you have HS50s def send them to zenmod and get em modded. The monitors sound, well......they dont really have a sound. I have done some quick mixing and def can tell the mixes translate much better.

I am looking to get a good but cheap microphone, probably an omni, for testing sound levels of various sources. The name of the game here is:

1) low self noise
2) A flat frequency response (not essential, but the closer the better).

The aim is to get a mic pre combo reliable down to 10-15dBA, or close to this.

Any mics around the £200 mark max (but definitely those cheaper are even more tempting).

Any advice or Microphone suggestions i should look at would be great guys!

A few in the list so far are:

Naiant X-O (specs say 15dBA)
Behringer B-5 (specs say 18dBA for the omni capsule)
MXL (specs say 17dBA, but i think this is a cardioid pattern, so not omni?)

I did think of a Rode NT1a, but been told directional mics are not ideal for sound level measuring, not sure myself if this matters as long as i point it properly at the source?

I currently have a Desktop Konnekt 6 Pre-amp. Someone told me i can short an XLR cable to discover the pre-amp noise level. If I have done this correctly, it's giving a reading of 17dBA. Is this sounding about right for this soundcards Pre? I may change this too, as i wanted lower than 17dBA noise floor.

Hey everyone

After all the praise here on GS I'm considering dipping my toes into the world of dynamic mics, but was just wondering if anyone here has had any actual real world experience of using a SM7b with an RME Babyface to record vocals, was the lack of gain an issue or was it no problem?

I don't really have a big rock voice so to speak, so I suspect I would end up having to crank the gain high any way I suspect. I think If I had to invest in a cloud lifter too I'd probably just keep saving for a nice tube condenser instead, but am intrigued by the legend that is the sm7b!

I have around $1k of extra incoming, and can't really make up my mind on what would be the best bang-for-buck scenario in terms of improving my home studio.

- Acoustic panels? I could get a lot for 300 euros, but I'm not sure it would make a whole lot of sense since I live in a studio apartment and have two noisy parrots in the same room I do my mixing. It would be like fixing Titanic with a band-aid.

- A sub? I do have good headphones for checking the low end already though (Senn HD600).

- Audient ASP008 adat to replace my ADA8000? Not so sure about this one since I have an MR816 and a Pre-73, and I only need 10 channels max at a time.

- Neve 1073 and A-Designs 500HR? Not sure how much improvement I'd hear over what I have now with just one good pre?

What I have now:
KRK VXT4 monitors, Senn HD600 headphones, enough mics, MR816X, ADA8000, Pre-73.

As a black horse, maybe some plugins? Slate VTM, VCC, Omnisphere? Argh, too many choises.

Maybe a Port City Wave OS guitar cab since I don't have any V30's right now.

Long time reader, first time poster. Hopefully I have this in the right section of the forum.

But, l have been searching around for an adequate way to get a flat, accurate sound in an home studio (my bedroom with horrible acoustics at this point). I don't have a large amount of money to spend: $500 - $600. I have nailed it down to two options:

Beyerdynamic DT880 250 OHM Heaphones w/ the Magni/Modi Stack
OR
KRK Rokit 5 Monitors w/ Focusrite Scarlett 2i4 Audio Interface

Both these options are priced at $580 in Australia.

So pretty much, I am choosing between high end studio headphones or studio monitors in a poor acoustics room. Thank you for any input :)

I'm looking for a good reverb that is easy to use. I don't use reverb on anything else than my drums, mostly just the snare, sometimes a tiny bit on the kick. And vocals. I've tried a few different ones. I've tried one called "Vahalla" that my friend showed me, I really don't like the sound of it, I've tried a free reverb called OldSkoolVerb which is okay. Fruity Reverb 2, the free reverb included with your copy of FL Studio, is much better than those but I'm looking to try a couple more to see if there's some better options out there. I"m looking for either a free one or something that is relatively cheap.

Also, I'm looking for an easy to use, good sounding filter. Something with just a low cut, high cut, resosance, and maybe a couple more parameters. Again, I'd prefer it be free but I can drop a couple bucks on it if need be.

Thanks guys!

I am wanting to upgrade my 3 pc. bluegrass bands live sound. We currently use a typical yamaha 12 channel pa that is good at making us louder...thats about it. We only use 6 channels and the effects sound horrible, so it's time to move on.
I'm also interested in using the rack for recording, live and or tracked into a babyface.

The band is - guitar, banjo/CBG and stand up.......three vocals. For the stand up we are using a AT831 lapel condenser that works great, but the other instruments are currently being DI'd through PADI's. All of this is working out fine, But we need to sound bigger and have a much sweeter vocal chain. And again, I want the setup to double as our front end for recording.

wants:
-Nice $1k or under 2 channel strip for the lead vox and guitar di.
This would be the primary Pre/DI for tracking also. Ribbons would be involved, so ample gain would be a plus.
-Multi channel strip with DI's and at least low pass filter, but ideally a bit of EQing ability.
-effects on vocals only
-some sort of summing box
-stereo power for running mains and monitors. We rarely need to be loud and would likely just line this set up out to FOH when it needs to go big.

This all can have some color to it as well. we aren't looking for pristine clean signal and prefer it to have a little analog/old time feel.

And dynamics are pretty important to our show, we tend to be hard/soft - loud/quiet within songs.

I'm not looking to spend $2k on this, but don't want to build a rack that only does what I already have.

cheers!

Hi, I'm not sure how long this has been going on, but I haven't used them in a few months and I'm only noticing it now.

There is some sort of static (white noise) hiss coming from the tweeters of my monitors. I can hear it from listening position from both monitors. They both give it off with the same volume and changing the settings on the back has no effect. This still happens even if I only plug in the power and nothing else, so I know it's not some issue with any other piece of hardware I own.

Any suggestions? Thanks!

Hello everybody

My needs are a bit specific, so I couldn't find any conclusive info yet. I'm looking for an audio interface that doesn't break the bank (as cheap as possible). No recording done, so no need for mic preamps or a dandy A/D.
I'll use it for audiophile listening which is why a good D/A converter is very important. If this was my only need, I'd go for an ODAC in a second.
However I do work with sample libraries too. For the recording through my digitalpiano I need low (and I mean LOW!) latency asio drivers, preferably multiclient. I think I'll go the external way, other than that no preferences for the connection type.
Which low priced audio interfaces would fit best? Is the Steinberg UR22 a good choice? How's the quality of it's dac (is it suited for audiophile listening)? Can anybody comment on it's latency? Or is there a possible to have a multiclient asio driver for the odac?

Thanks for all suggestions

I've searched the net and read quite a few threads around here on GS and I know it's been covered to death but what you would recommend besides the highly suggested ME-1NV? Just out of curiosity. My budget is roughly 1k to $1200.

Right now I'm leaning towards the Bae 1073 dmp. Would anyone recommend that? or has any experience using the sm7b with it?

I also own a sm57. My current setup is just a presonus firepod as my interface. From time to time I also play with my Tascam 424mkIII so I would like to be able to run my pre into that as well with no problem.

I know the sm7 is gain hungry so I want to be sure my pre has enough clean gain to power it with the least amount of noise.

I just missed out on one on craigslist that was mint going for $860 and unfortunately they are hard to come by used it seems so I might be forced to bite the bullet and purchase a new one. Makes me wish gearslutz had a classified section.

None the less, I'm curious on some of the other recommendations.

I produce electronic music and just finished saving up for a new computer which I'll be using to write music on over the three months I have off school. I had never gotten around to buying an amp and just plugged the AKGs straight into my interface, which I now realize didn't give them as much power as they needed. Also, although I've burned them in, I've never spent a whole lot of time producing with them so it wouldn't be a loss if I sold them (I didn't know them inside out). Should I sell them and get cheaper cans that aren't entirely reliant on power like the K701s, or should I keep them to produce without an amp?

Hi there,

I have my studio in my bedroom (ok, not a studio properlly speaking but, this is low end theory, right?) so I can´t make so much noise, due to neighbors, family, police:cop:...

When I record guitars i need to do it via reamp (this way in an hour or less the job is done) but I cannot get the natural sustain of the real amp, otherwise the tone and the feeling are really the same but the sustained notes simply die after just two seconds.

The recording path is
Guitar -> Palmer audionomix passive DI Box -> Mbox 2 mini -> Pro tools -> Mbox 2 mini -> Palmer DI (in reverse) -> Blackstar Ht5 -> Sm57 -> Mbox 2 mini -> Pro tools. mezed

Is there something wrong in the chain? What can i do? Do I need a dedicated reamp box instead of the reversed-DI?

What you think?

Hi all!

I´m looking for a pair of monitors... I spend some time producing some deep house music just for fun and I've been using headphones (senns HD25).

I want to get the best bang for the buck and I ended up with short list:

- Equator D5s;
- NHT Superpowers;

How can you compare these two?
I may add a sub in the future, but when I think of that I wonder if it wouldn't be better to get some yamaha HS80m or the new HS7/HS8, and I would be spending less.

I work in an untreated living room with around 20sqm.

Thank you!

So basically, i want to record some live covers and originals for youtube. I am recording the video with iPhone (i don't care about vid quality really) but i have recently invested in a few things :

-Roland Tri capture audio interface (one xlr input, one 1/4 jack)
-Shure sm 58 (vocals)
-Akg perception 120 (guitar mic)

I also have a couple of stands. I am recording all these instruments into ableton at once, through the two microphones

(just to note: i've plugged the AKG 120 into the XLR input (phantom power) and the sm 57 to the 1/4 jack (using an XLR to 1/4 adaptor))

but i'm having problems:

- There is a LOT of vocal bleed into the AKG mic (i would even say the akg picks up more sound than the sm 58 itself) - the signal input is really soft at like -20 DB.
-The quality just doesn't sound nearly as good as i'd hope - i'm not even sure but i've looked at a lot of compression/eq tutorials and this has worked, but i'm really having an issue with the pickup signal from the sm58.

I have an inkling; that the reason the SM 58 isn't picking up much vocal is because it's connected to the 1/4 jack instead of an XLR input. But also, i have no idea how to isolate the guitar only when recording with the perception 120 (as my vocals also are picked up quite reasonably).

Keeping in mind that i want to record this all at once (no overdubbing as it will be live), does anybody have any suggestions?

One time I placed it on a different surface and that noise disappears. I play with a band a used this guy with some passive speakers. Recently the squeaking noise comes on just about 90% of the time.

I also connect it through a Xenyx mixer and today the sound just completely cuts off, I know it definitely has to do with the cable connection if not the XLR socket on the channels. Is there anything I can do? I wouldn't mind opening it up and taking a picture for you guys.

Hey,

Can anyone explain why my ears get sore and tired when listening music for long periods on my Sennheiser HD-25 headphones through Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 audio interface?

I notice it immediately that when I switch the connection to the normal computer headphone jack I can listen to longer periods without my ears aching. I'm not making this up as I bought the interface mainly to improve my listening experience but unfortunately while it does make the audio fidelity better, it also makes the listening experience more unpleasant.

I also have a Rane Sixty One DJ-mixer with built-in converters and I can listen through it as well with no ear fatigue. Somehow just the Focusrite interface makes this. Maybe it has something to do with the way it makes the higher frequencies more sharp? I can also verify this experience with my KRK rokit rp5 monitors even though it is not as apparent as with the headphones.

Hi all:

New to the forum - was directed here for expertise in setting up a small room for practice / recording (I primarily play guitar). Right now, I've got a 3/4 stack in one corner and a combo stack in another along with a semi-permanent bookshelf. Everything else (except for the shelving system I've installed into the closet) is completely movable. Below is a drawing of the current layout.

I'm looking to put a recording desk together to record demos and jams with friends. I have the computer, monitors / stands, input device, etc., but am looking for some help determining the best location for placing the desk, with respect to monitor placement. Would it be best to squeeze the desk between corners so that I have the window centered behind the computer monitor (screen), or should I put it on the longer wall and somehow do something to tame the window and closet side reflections?

I know this thread has been posted a million times before, and I feel like I have probably read every one of them, but with the changing times, and advances in tech, and monitors that were once expensive now being available for cheaper used, I figured I would start a new one.

I am currently using Event 20/20 P's, which I bought new and have had for a decade now. I have never been totally thrilled with them, as I feel they are not very true. I will add, due to the constraints of my apartment, I am working in an untreated room.
I am thinking about getting new monitors, would like to stay under 500.00, need something good for working on Rock/Metal mixes, and would consider buying used.
Any suggestions? Go.....diddlydoo

Hi there,

This is my first post, and I am trying to learn the best way to capture my playing and singing simultaneously in my studio. I find that no matter how hard I try, I cannot seem to get the emotion and texture to my recordings when I try separate tracks / overdubs. However, I would like to isolate my vocals from my guitar as much as possible.

Microphones are not an issue, as I have plenty in my locker, including a stereo pair of CAD e70's with either omni or cardioid capsules, a CAD GXL3000 (cardioid, omni, figure-8), an AKG c3000, a pair of AKG C1000s's (cardioid, hypercardioid) a few different MXL mics (a pair of 992's, and a 993), an SM57, an SM58, and a few others.

However, I really need to understand the best way to isolate the sources to make mixing / tracking more discreet. I have looked at several microphone placement diagrams, but I would like to get the opinions of the GS community on advice for making this happen.

Thanks in advance

Here's a little acoustic guitar shootout I did with a newer SMT version MXL 990 microphone, and an older THT MXL 990 Microphone. SMT = Surface Mount Technology, THT = Through Hole Technology. It's a different way of attaching components on a circuit board. MXL is moving to SMT since it's probably cheaper, but I think it sounds better on the stock microphone. The difference is more apparent in the raw WAV file than the mp3.
The huge downside is that it's almost impossible to mod a SMT mic.

Anyhow, here's the results. The Alternating versions alternate every 4 bars, always starting with the SMT.

Both mics same source through an Apogee Mini-Me preamp/converter. Gibson Songwriter Deluxe, Pro Tools 8. The mic is about 3 - 4" at around the twelfth fret pointing back at the bridge.
It's a used card that I got with an old 01v console, so it could be bad.

Hello fellow GS users. I am looking to get 2 channels of compression. I currently have none.

Are there any compressors that could be used for mixing and mastering? I know there's a difference in these two applications, but I can only afford 2 channels currently. What happens if you use a "Mastering Compressor" for mixing? What happens if you sue a "Mixing Compressor" for mastering?

Can anyone recommend anything in the $1,200-$1,500 per channel price range?
Thanks.

I'm looking to upgrade my interface from a Saffire pro 14. I like the look of the liquid saffire and have read good reviews on the unit. However the babyface has really caught my eye and I'm wondering how these units stack up against each other.

Obviously the ls56 comes with more I/o, but I'm really only currently looking to use two microphones at once while recording, so I am mainly interested in the liquid pres vs that of the babyface. I believe I can expand on the babyface with external pres in the future which is something I will definitely want to do, but I don't believe out can fully bypass the saffire pres.

I'm looking for any advice, I'm using a windows computer so apogee is out I the window.

Would I be better spending more on two quality mic pres with solid conversion in the babyface or are the liquid pres worth it, alongside the extra inputs?

Thanks in advance.

Hi all. New here, this is my first post (Although I have lurked for a while).
I'm a BTEC Music Tech student and I've just been given an "unconditional" for a Music Production degree at UCLAN. I usually work "inside the box" at home, but I want to break out of it for uni and was wondering what specific outboard gear you would advise is absolutely essential to a fledgling producer's home-studio, on a tight student budget. I don't mind buying second-hand and I don't mind having slightly older gear if it means I get a better sound for my cash. I mainly work on extreme metal and hip-hop, odd match, but there 'ya go, haha.
Thanks in advance for any replies.

Is it worth getting a relatively reasonable condenser microphone such as MXL990, Nt1a? (Will be buying secondhand, unfortunately there isn't any bargains out there at present.) Or going down the very low end with the Samson C01 & Behringers so that I can also get a pair of monitors!

I'm looking at acquiring an Ashly SC-50 blueface compressor in a trade. I happen to have a rather large stash of vintage transformers and I'm wondering if I might be able to squeeze a bit more mojo out of the Ashly if I were to modify it with some vintage Sowters, UTCs, Stancors, or Triads on the input and output of the compressor. Has anyone tried this on an Ashly SC-50 (or a similarly-styled VCA comp, for that matter)?

I am encouraged to try this mod because of the apparent similarity between the Ashly SC-50 and the beloved DBX 160x--which has a transformer-coupled output, I believe. I am also familiar with a transformer mod that people seem to like for the ART Pro-Vla--likewise, I'm wondering if a similar mod might be useful for the Ashly.

If anyone has DIRECT experience, I'd love to hear from you! Also, transformer gurus' input would be most appreciated--especially anyone who has experience with adding transformers to the ins or outs of a non-transformer-coupled compressor.

Thanks very much!

Cheers.

Link: PreSonus Eris Monitors

I'm waiting for reliable reviews of the new Eris monitors to appear. Assuming all goes well, I'll buy either a pair of E8s or E5s. If I go with the smaller E5s, I expect to add a subwoofer for a 2.1 configuration ASAP.

I'd prefer to go with the E5s for a couple of reasons, but I worry that bass response that only reaches down to 53Hz will not provide an accurate representation.

I've been applying a steep high-pass filter above 53Hz to various tunes and then flipping the bypass on and off. With the filter in place, the bass is seriously diminished (listening via decent headphones). If this is not a reliable indication of the E5's performance...please clue me in.

Reasons to choose the smaller E5s:
1. $300 vs. $500, less expensive.
2. 80 watts vs 140 watts, cheaper to run.
3. Small less-than-optimum mixing environment, so "less boom" is better.
4. I can add a subwoofer later - probably better than a pair of E8s. Turn off the sub when not needed.

Any advice welcome.

Hi Guys,

Really enjoy reading on this forum and such a wealth of info here. I'll be hooked to modding equipment in no timekfhkh...anyway,

I recently purchased a used MXL V69 Mogami Edition tube mic off of ebay and first tested it last night. Ensuring all of my connections were good, I turned on the power supply unit and the phantom power on the Scarlett 8i6...

...nothing. No response whatsoever. I shut off the PSU and phantom power, disconnect mic and open it up to inspect internally. Everything appears intact and mic has not been modded, still contains original tube as well. Again, I inspect all connections thoroughly. I power the mic up and again check my monitor levels, ensure PSU is on and phantom power engaged. Still nothing. The tube appears to be in good shape and almost new as well, but I have no prior experience with tube mics so it could be something that I am unable to see.

I'm bummed out to say the least because this mic looks almost brand new and I would really like to add it to my gear. I am expecting to come home and check the cords to make sure it is not an issue with them but I do not have another 7 pin cord though, unfortunately.

How can I further the troubleshooting with this mic?

Is it possible the tube is no good anymore and can a bad tube kill the signal like that?

I'm hoping it's just the tube, which I intended to replace anyway, but I'd really not want to have to deal with the hassle of sending it back and all that; but if attempting to locate the problem is going to take hours of special attention and equipment or component swapping, this thing is going back asap.

Any experience or advice that you think will help is greatly appreciated.

Hiya, I'm about to upgrade my studio equipment! :D

I have a very cheap (s#it) £30 Behringer 302 USB interface and a PG58 mic (My old AKG headphones aren't working anymore, so I got to change them..).

I was seriously considering buying the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 Bundle, which comes with the 2i2 USB interface, a mic (CM25) and headphones (HP60), both exclusive this bundle and said to be "studio quality".
I can get this bundle 'round here for £200.

My question is: Has anyone ever tried/tested the mic and headphones that comes with this bundle? Any comparison with other brands and models?

I don't know if I should buy the interface only (£120) and buy another pair of headphones like the ATH M40fs for around £70 + a condenser mic for around the same price, or even keep using my PG58 mic and spend some more on the headphones, as I was gonna use them for mixing, just for now.
I'm not even sure if I should buy just cheap tracking headphones + a cheap (but good) monitor set like the M-Audio M40s (£100), although mixing during the night would be big plus.

As you can see, I'm very confused with all this options, and I'd appreciate someone else's opinion.
My budget is ideally something between £200 - £300, but the cheaper the better!

Thanks very much!
Min 16 channels
At best with direct outs and several tape returns.
I'll be using in hybrid setup for some tracking and much mixing.

Have been looking at Soundtracs, Soundcraft, D&R....

I need more options, and hopefully some consensus!! ;)

Or if you think modern consoles for $1500 trump older ones, then feel free to suggest me modern alternatives. But I doubt it...
Thanks!!!

Hello,

I need a mobile solution for composing/mixing. My Lenovo X220 sound card just doesn't do it, so I'm searching for an alternative.

I went to a Hi-Fi shop and listened to the gorgeous-looking small Fiio E10 and the new E07K USB DAC/headphone preamps. They both sounded nice, remarkably crisper and more detailed than my computer's internal sound card. But they weren't able to play with Pro Tools' biggest buffer size of 1024 samples. In Reason it was a bit better, but still too bad to use it with midi keyboard. ASIO4ALL drivers were unstable, sometimes giving the sound and sometimes not at all.
Does anybody know if there is a solution for the problem or should I look for a different DAC?

Couple of my friends have the Focusrite VRM Box, I will check that. I think I don't necessarily need the room emulation, I've tried TB Isone and feel that it somehow works, also I've heard that the VRM is not totally free of issues.

What about ESI Dr. Dac nano? Anybody have comments about that? Or anything else? Both latency and sound quality wise.

It also comes down for me to what is easier to get - buying from outside of EU would make me pay much tax. The Fiios are in a shop around here and both ESI and VRM are listed on Thomann.

Regards,

I'm in the market for an interface soon so I've been researching different models in preparation. I plan on picking up a pair of the Equator D5 monitors so initially I'll just need an interface with a decent DAC to run to them. But ideally I'd like to give myself room to expand for recording in the future.

For tracking a band, I'd need 8-10 analogue ins and preamps to go with them. A matching number of outputs would be nice so I'd have the option of running the band through processing and back out into the front of house board when playing live. I could settle for 2-4 outs though.

Now I could try to find one unit that has all the I/O and preamps or I could pick an interface based on converters and drivers and get a separate unit for preamps. (I suppose I could go for external converters too but that seems a bit excessive for my purposes)

I was looking at possibly getting a used MOTU 828 MKII/III with the usb connection. The issue there is it only has a couple preamps so I'd need to buy external pres. If I'm gonna have to do that anyway is it better to get a more barebones interface, something like the Tascam US-1641 or US-1800? And then add something like an octopre to that? The benefit of that approach would be not having to spend as much upfront since I'm not actively recording at the moment. Then once I actually have the need for the pres I can add those in. And I could still do quick and dirty demo recordings running naked into the interface and then possibly re-amp afterwards.

I'm hoping some slutz can suggest a rig on a tight budget. What would you get for most bang for your buck? Should I go for something like the Tascam upfront for my monitors and then add on gear down the road? Or should I invest in an interface with better converters? When it comes time to record, what should I be looking at for quality pres on the cheap to match to my interface? Or is there some magical device that has what I need for a low sum of money that I'm somehow not aware of?

I'm running windows and would prefer USB for maximum flexibility. It'd be convenient to be able to plug my interface into a friend's laptop instead of having to rely on firewire or pci. I'll probably be buying used so factor that into the price calculation. Ideally I'm shooting for around the 400 range, cheaper is always welcomed of course.

What say ye slutz? hittt

Hi guys, my first post!

Im totally new in the world of speakers, im currently using a Monster Beatbox iPod dock to listen to music on. I do not mix music i simply listen to it.

However i'm really missing that stereo sound that my friends speakers have, so am looking at getting my own pair, i just use iTunes to play music.

I am currently looking these....
- KRK Rokit 5's or 6's G2.
- Mackie Mr5 or Mr8 Mk2's.
- Acoustic Energy 301's
- Yamaha Hs50's or 80's.

Now im not an audiophile and mainly listen to bassy songs and am not looking to buy a sub as i dont have the room about (4mx6m), these would be situated near a wall so front firing bass port is preferable.

Anyway having a tough time deciding so any opinions or advice would be appreciated. cheeers.

Hello!

I am new to recording and would like to buy a mic for my baritone or bass voice (not sure which) as well as high voices, and piano and cello.

I would prefer something like $100~200 or even up to $500.

One time I was using a headset connected to a Audio Interface from my university and I was pleased with its recording quality. It couldn't have been more than $50 dollars. But then they changed the all the headsets that had a low quality recording. But then I found the previous headset lying around and tested it, but without the audio interface, and it had a hint of the previous nice recording quality but was bad, I'm guessing from the lack of audio interface.

It was a plantronics mic that looked kind of like this: Amazon.com: Plantronics .Audio 355 Multimedia Headset: Electronics

If my understanding is correct, is audio interface supposed to enhance the quality of the input and output sounds?

Anyways, I was pretty satisfied with the quality of that headset and so I guess I can a mic that I can be at least satisfied with, for less than $100. Could anyone recommend one?

If a mic is good at recording bass voice, does that mean that it won't be good for recording high soprano voice?

Hi all,
Been working on recording of this song for a cover demo. A couple of questions:
1. In the verses, the backing vox that go, yea, yea, yea, yea followed by the ooh part. Is this just a simple part of the vox only or is it blended with a woodblock mixed underneath? Sounds like both to me. You? Also is there an available sample of this anywhere? Can't seem to locate one. If not, I will record the vox part and layer in woodblock (if you all hear it the way I do)

2. In the chorus section there is a synth part that ramps up and repeats witha modulation/pitch shifter. Any idea how I could create that? Was thinking using a slow ddelay that is synced to tempo followed by a chorus/pitch shifter fx. Any thoughts?

Thanks for your help. Btw, will be using a Roland Juno Gi and various plugins to try to re-create these parts.

I just bought a 2i2 + AT2020 instead with a cheaper USB Mic. From what I read, cheap interfaces (~$100) simply aren't worth it. Although they may have a built in pre, it really doesn't provide a whole lot more than interfaces on USB mics like the Blue Yeti.
This is a topic that comes up here and there, but I'm still unsure what the general consensus is regarding this.
Another annoying comparison thread I know. I've got some Event 2030 monitors on order, but the shipping has been delayed another month or so. Am thinking of perhaps going with the Eve monitors, however they are more expensive (especially the 207)

So I was recording a live gig last night, using a Sennheiser e609 on guitar. There were some crazy problems with the guitar level jumping in volume and I figured it was just the amp, but it did it with 2 different amps so it had to be the mic.
The issue is, it doesn't make sense. I listened back to the recording and it's not as if there is just a level drop because the spill from the drums is the same before and after the drop. When I boosted the gain on the channel shortly after the drop, the spill from the drums starts to dominate even. I was also starting to get feedback from the guitar mic!
It seems as if the mic level dropped and it turned into an omni, but how can this be??? If someone had kicked the mic out of the way of the amp and ponted at the drums the same thing would have happened, but listening to the recording, it clicked in an instant and then came back (very loud) in an instant at the end of the set. It did the same in the next band's set.
Does anyone have any clues at all, I'm stumped.
Bad cables/mics usually mean a drop in the total level, not just the thing closest to the mic.
If the e609 had a dual element and one was temperamental, maybe that would explain it?

I like the CueMix options with the MOTU 828s but due to reported issues with that unit I am not willing to risk a used one.

I am building (as small as possible) a rack for recording live bands. Primarily live sessions, typically untreated rooms. 8 XLR Pre's should do it, not bothered about preamp quality as I have a separate preamp I'm happy with that is also going in the rack.

Hey there Slutz...

I'm about to have my first CD replicated. My mastering engineer swears by DiscMakers and I'm sure that they provide a great product. Even have friends who have used them. But they are the most expensive option out there.

I can have DiscMakers replicate my first 1000 discs for about $2200.00 or I can use one of the other guys and get it done for about $1500.00, maybe less.

I'm looking seriously at Unified Manufacturing (CD/DVD Manufacturing, Creative CD/DVD Packaging, Duplication, Blu-Ray Replication, USB Vinyl Pressing- Unified Manufacturing). They are much cheaper than DiscMakers and have an impressive client list.

If any of you guys have nightmare experiences with Unified, please speak up and spare me that kind of experience.

Any and all opinions about which replication house to use and why are greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Does anyone know the difference in printing a track at a low level and turning it up or recording at a high level and keeping it lower?
Is there a difference in recording at high levels verses low volume?

Especially on guitar cabs but any other instruments for that matter, assuming that the noise floor is good enough to accommodate both options.

If so, can you please list what those differences are (physics) or from common practice?
I wonder what the net result is when applying such differences in mixing/tracking to different instruments or DI tracks.

Now, I know a little about recording levels, dbVu and dbsf levels, gain staging etc. so this is not really a gain staging question.
Thanks

(It's cheaper (525) If you're in the area and can pick them up).

I can e-mail pics as well.

I am selling them because well, call me a loser, but I cannot get used to them.

Yes, they sound sexual and awesome. The depth is incredible, as well as the fine details (it's like you're wearing headphones); but I am just too used to the yamaha hs50/hs80's to mix properly on the adams. And a pair of speakers that are worth one grand (new) to me aren't worth it to just be "listening" speakers.

Funds could be put into something more effective, like a better quality audio interface, etc etc.

I've been looking at the Focusrite ISA One digital converter card that allows the output of the ISA One to plug directly into the digital input of your recording setup.

It runs about $400 just for the card.

I'm wondering if this is worth it as it only (obviously) works with the ISA One or would it be better to buy an external DA converter that could be used with any preamp?

The main issue is that decent DA converters are going to be way more than $400.

Thoughts?

Once those questions are answered, please feel free to chime in with any tips on upgrading the tubes in this device, or specific reccomendatoins. Although if you reccomend a tube, it would be better if you describe it it impacted the sound of your GT Brick.

I am only swapping out the tube due to curiosity. I also have a mic which uses the same tube, and I figured I could test 2 or 3 tubes in it, and then throw them in the Brick to see if they doi anything I like.

***EDIT**** Since this is a mono preamp, I do not need a matched set of tubes, correct? My concerns should be moreso that they are balanced and non microphonic, with no shorts, is what I am thinking.

In fact, now that I think about it, it seems like they would not even need to be the same "brand", technically. ***EDIT***
PLEASE DISREGARD THIS PORTION OF THE POST. THIS APPEARS TO BE A NON-ISSUE WITH THE BRICK.

I already have sdcs and an sm57, and would like a good versatile mic primarily for vocals but maybe capable of doing things like guitar cabs and kicks. I work with all kinds of bands and 70% are local bands on a budget who generally expect me to master. I inform bands of the advantages of using a ME but the budget often doesn't stretch that far.

So recently I have got into a really bad habit of adding too much top end or exciting the top of my mixes far too much when I get to the master. Can anyone suggest some good monitors with a detailed top.

I currently use KRK VXT8s and some old Hi Fi speakers but I think I need a new addition.

What would be perfect for me should be a the Volca Bass (or a Monotribe) + Volca Drums, and some way to mix the signals with some fx applied to just one of the machines.

I've just finished soldering my patchbay up and everything is coming thru ok, execpt for 6 channels.

I run a digi 001 (using the 8 analogue ins) and an Apogee AD16x (lightpiped to the digi001)

My patchbay set-up

............1-16.............|.............17-32
mic lines from live room |....... Desk line outs......| outboard
1-2...........3-16.......|17-18| 19-24 | 25-32
digi001..| mixer inputs |........|digi 001 | Apogee | outboard
mic pre | mic pres......|........|inputs...|inputs |

Everything is normalled, so if you plug a mic into channel 12 in the live room and put track 12 (Apogee 4) in record-ready, its there.

Now I am only getting hum in record-ready on the digi 001 inputs 3-8. The 1-2 are the built in mic pres, and these bypass the mixer. However, the apogee inputs are sent from the mixer and have no hum.

Everything is earthed both ends. I tried disconnecting the earth at the mixer, but this had no effect.

Plugging in a patch lead into the digi001 inputs (thus breaking the 'normal' connection) eliminates the hum. However, if I patch in channels 9-16 into the didi001 (normally they feed the apogee, hum free) the hum returns.

I'm stumped on this. Figure it must be an earth issue somewhere, but no idea. Any help or suggestions would be great, thanks.

And yes I know I need to upgrade my 001.

Hi, Ive been lurking on here for a short time and Im about to take the plunge and spend some money on trying to create my own music.
At the moment I have no instruments around the house and I use a Acer Aspire laptop.
Ive seen a 2nd hand M-Audio Oxygen 61 on Ebay and have put in a bid.

Im just wanting to know, starting from scratch and wanting to write dance/trance/ambient music whats the best things to buy?

Ive got £300, unfortunately to me this a huge amount of money, but as Im creeping nearer 40, Ive decided this is going to be my mid-life crisis

So if anyone can recommend a couple of essentials for a beginner, I would greatly appreciate the advice. From Midi Keyboards to Software, to books any help would be appreciated.
Thanks again

I am looking for a small mixing console w/ firewire for my home studio. Be nice if it had an EQ, inserts & Sends/Returns so I can plug my outboard gear into it. I am on a £500 budget which may sound like nothing to some people.

I have had a look at the Mackie Onyx (Doesn't Have Enough EQ Bands)
I looked at the Behringer XENYX UFX1604 which I don't think has been released yet. But a lot of people have a grudge or gave bad reviews on Behringer so im not sure.

I also looked at the MultiMix 16 which is USB. I havent tried it out yet or seen any reviews on it.

If anyone has any suggestions please reply back.
Thanks

This would be mainly used for making Kemper profiles and tracking high gain guitars. I can add the eq to the Kemper profiles itb during the creation of the profile, so I'm not absolutely sure a cheap eq would make a difference?

Hello folks,
I'm in the market for some nearfields for my home/mobile setup. I have a pretty good idea of what I'm looking for in terms of sound, just not exactly sure where to go from here.

-I would ideally like to keep this under $800 for a pair. Willing to go used.

-I'm fairly accustomed to NS-10s, Hafler M5s, Barefoot MicroMain 25s, Adam S3Xs, and Tannoy Precisions. I've had good experiences with/found uses for all of these, but I especially would like something that is more along the lines of the Tannoys or M5s- that is, something that is going to be somewhat unflattering and midrange-heavy. (my issue with the Adams especially is that they have a habit of tricking me into thinking I'm doing a good job. heppy )

-active is a plus, for the sake of being mobile.

-can be smaller, as I don't have a big room.

-would like to get something with a response down to 60hz if that's even realistic at this price point/size range.

thanks for any and all help. appreciate it! :)

I have the opportunity to get an AKG C2000B. Would it be significantly better for violin? (Note: 2000 not 200).

I have read that the 2000 has some "weirdness" in the high end; I've read similar of the 603/990. If it's the same sort of weirdness then there's probably no reason to get the 2000, because the violin is so much about the high end.

I know the SM81 and KSM141 are good mics for violin -- they're just out of my price range.

Hi guys.

I watched a video of Phil Tan mixing Black and Yellow on kagimedia.com.
I noticed that before he processes vocals on busses he would use the rcomp on singular tracks. In this case with very fast attack times. He also did this on the synths on this record.

Now Ive always been a bit reluctant to use fast attack as people have told me to let the sounds breath and not to cut the initial transient off. Can somebody please explain about why and when I should use short attack times. As always - I know it all depends but I just want to learn. In this case with the synths I would presume he did it to get the drums hitting harder by letting them have more of the transient. But he actually compressed the kick with a short attack time to.(?)

But on things like vocals why and when would I be in need of shorter attack times? I mix rap & r&b records.

Thank you

Hey,

Looking for either a single (to start) or matched pair of ‘decent’ multi-pattern SDCs in the $200-$500 range. Decent meaning I could use it for pro and semi pro recordings.

Standard applications like acoustic guitar (mono and stereo), small acoustic instruments. As drum overheads, in a 4 mic setup (kick, snare 2 OHs). Omni for ambient mic’ing at shows, rehearsals, and in project studio (aware of room quality limitations here).

So far my research has pointed me towards:

Shure KSM141 – nice, but a little pricey considering their flat rep
Apex 185 pair – huge bang for buck, but not sure about the depth and detail
Studio Projects C4 MKII – sound promising, but a trusted retailer told me there’s not much difference compared to the Apex on these
Oktava MK-012 – a top contender, but the omni capsules are sold separately

Any advice or other recommendations?

Cheers

I have rarely used a level meter plugin on my master fader because I'm not sure what I'm really doing. I've been mixing for years making my own master because I can't afford a true mastering house. I use Logic Pro 7 and usually use Eq , compression and an L2 limiter on the master fader. The master fader and loudness visually doesn't always translate to a good loud mix.

My question is how do you use a level meter and other plugins or analysis type plugs on your master fader if your in the box (daw)and in my situation. I realize there's many variables and a proper mastering pro is prob best. I do rock, pop bluesy stuff. I'm mainly trying to match song to song levels and trying to figure out the level meters role. Song to song in loudness and dynamics vary but Id like some pointers on level matching. Any advice in laymans terms appreciated. I also have some spectrum analysis plugs but have no idea what I'm looking at or how they work. This topic should probably be in things you should know by now but are afraid to ask...or something like that. I trust my ears but I'd like to learn to trust my eyes a bit more...thanks

Hey everyone,

I posted this question in "Stellar CM-6 mods" but haven't had any response so I decided to create a thread...

I recently bought a BeesNeez K7 capsule and got a 2nd one for free!

I wanted some opinions on what dual diaphragm vocal/instrument mic I could put the second one in. Less than $500 would be ideal.

I was thinking perhaps the Stellar CM-6, MXL 960 or the Rode NT2-A.

Cheers.

Im thinking of purchasing a new preamp but was wondering if I would be OK running it in to the old channel strip for compression purposes.

In other words, if I purchase a good PreAmp but run it in to a not so great pre (ch-strip) to use its compressor, will I be "a dog chasing his own tail"?

The other option is obviously by a nice compressor as well but moneys tight.

If the "GS low-end favorites" Gap, FMR, Grace actualy a boost/upgrade over the Eureka? Especialy FMR, its so cheap I worry there cant be much improvement at all. . . . .
Sold as stand alone unit like the golden age pre 73. I think they should do this to aim for the beginner market and they will have a low end but high quality at a low price. They would make future business with new trusted customers. I think they should do this

I now want to record the results and am thinking to use a portable recorder such as the Zoom H4n (other suggestions welcome). The H4n records at 24/96 and the preamps can be bypassed using the trs jacks. Would this be a viable option or would I be loosing some quality compared to say, recording back into protools?

Of course, the more conventional uses for the H4n would be great to have too.

Hi,

first of all I just wanted to say that .. I LOVE this forum! Have been using it for years without registering and learnt a lot of useful things!

Now back to business: I have an ESI Juli@ (which I am very much in love with -- I just bought a Roland Quad Capture to "upgrade" from the Juli@, but have found it to be quite useless because its' latency is much higher than my old card (5,8ms @ 256 samples on Juli@ and 13,41ms @ 256 on the QC; the CPU load in Studio One is also a bit higher on the QC)) and would like to (you're still following me?) know what my best options are, as I'm planning on buying a set of monitors and a condenser mic.

What I want:
- a setup with which I can control the volume of my monitors and headphones separately.
- a phantom powered source for a condenser mic
- Just one mic input is enough

So basically, I just want some sort of "break-out box" for my ESI Juli@ to control my monitors, headphones and mic input.

Thank you !!

Okay, so I've been adding some significant improvements to my home studio to slowly take my setup to a pro level over time. I'm getting gear that I won't feel the need to ever really upgrade, only add to.

Completed:
Computer upgrade, i7 3930K, 32Gb RAM.
Interface - RME UCX
Monitors - Yam HS50m
Mic- AKG c214
Expanded I/O: Behringer ADA, soon to get a BLA premium mod

Next up:
Bus compressor - CL Labs 7720
Main monitors: Adam A7x, and/or JBL LSR 8" set
Sub: Yam, HS10W
Preamp: Warm Audio WA12
Distressor
Leasing studio space
Motif XS rack
Virus TI

I'm listing all of this so you have an idea of the level of gear I want in the studio. Not exactly the super-high end stuff... but I want the really good items that are more cost-friendly, without sacrificing in sound and quality. Notthe cheap stuff... but not the top of the line either (which doesn't make sense to attempt to afford until you're making big big money from music.)

So... next up is the bus compressor on my list. I'm happy w/ UCX preamps so I can hold out on the Warm Audio unit. I can get some good mixes on the Yams, so I can hold on on the Adams. I don't need a sub yet until I have a better recording room. I'm technically good on sounds right now, so the Motif and Virus will be additional toys at a later date.

But... i could really use a nice hardware bus compressor unit. I want something that performs very well and will give me those extra few points of overall sonic awesomeness lol, when used right. I think I want a clean one.. just somethign to help me get my recordings more professional than they are. I've gotten very good at mixing and love my software plugins... but the hands on feel of hardware appeals to me. I'm interested to see what I can do with a good unit... maybe some new inspirations will happen.

So.. I'm thinking about the Chameleon Labs 7720 bus comp. I hear it's good, clean, SSL-style compression. Is it good for "glue"? I also love the price tag. $500 is my budget, and I can likely get one used for aroudn that price... new for a little bit more. I haven't seen much come close to this price for a stereo compressor, let alone a good one... aside from maybe an FMR RNC.

Would the CL Labs outperform the RNC? Is there anything else in this price range I should consider? There don't seem to be a plethora of options for bus compression at the $500 and under price range.

So after a fair amount of research I decided to go with the R8 as my workstation.

When all was unboxed and plugged in. I sampled must of it's features such as Amp sims bla bla.. And was very disapointed by the quality of the samples. And for the rest of the R8's layout and it's process with recording I found this rather cheap. I also didn't like how track 1/2 are linked together when it's comes to effects etc.

And for RCA inputs, with 1/4's? Is it possible to fit Red&white into them headphone jack to 1/4 jack?

Did anyone else dislike the R8?

Looking for a refund, but would like to love it, but that seems bleak.

Hey folks, I am working to just do some nice demo tracks of a small (mostly) acoustic ensemble. Congas, Bass Ukulele (UBASS - which will go direct), and an acoustic or an archtop Jazz Box (possibly into a low volume clean Mambo amp).

I want a few inexpensive work horse mics that I can just place to get representation without a lot of fuss.

Some mics that came to mind were:
- Cascade Fat Heads
- Little Blondie

I am thinking of just picking up 3 or 4 little blondies (two on the congas, one on the archtop, one more somewhere else or on the amp etc).

Down the road I might be recording miscellaneous stuff like shakers, cajon/etc but the music will really feature an Archtop jazz box (fully carved instrument - so it has a lot of acoustic tone).

I'm sure I can do better with the pre-amps, but what to get? There are 4 line-ins on the back of the Tascam, so 2-4 channels would be fine. I don't

I'm trying to decide between the MOTU 24I/O and the Focusrite Scarlet 18i20 as an interface for running pro tools on my Windows 7 machine. I would be adding an 8 channel preamp to either provide mic preamps or bring the channel count up to 16. (Looking at PreSonus DigiMax 8, ART Tubeopt 8, or Focusrite Octopre MkII).

I need to solve 2 problems with this setup.
1) I want to record the direct outs of my church's worship service. 16 channels might be cutting it close because we usually have 2-5 vocals, stereo piano, 2-3 guitars, and bass. I would be adding drums mics as well. The board is 24 channels. (A&H GL3300)
2) I want to record music at home, including a full drum kit.

I want to run pro tools because that's what I'm comfortable with. I currently have an MBox Mini, with ProTools 7. I will be buying the newer version of pro tools when I make this purchase as well.

The 24I/O is a PCIe solution, while the Scarlet is USB. Both of them say 'near zero latency', but is this just marketing? Is there much a difference between the two? I know from using my MBox Mini, that the latency makes monitoring out of pro tools pretty much impossible. Would the 24I/O or Scarlett be significantly different in latency, both unusable like the MBox, or both usable?

The cost for the Scarlet is about $950 cheaper than the 24I/O. The 24 I/O would support more channels and be more friendly to purchasing nicer preamps and other gear down the road.

Any advice would be appreciated!
