Hey guys,

First time poster! This forum has helped me out more than a few times.

Ok, so I have owned my Ultralite for some time now and am familiar with it. I recently bought a Moog Slim Phatty and am finding it overly quiet. Now, normally I just turn up the Trim on the ultralite all the way, but I still cant get volume i'm hoping for. I then have to apply more gain in my DAW... this seems odd to me as my Access Virus has no problem being loud with no Trim adjustment.

Hopefully someone can educate me as to why this is or what i'm doing wrong here. I know that the moog is mono so it will output half the volume of a stereo signal... correct? Is it normal to have to crank up the input?

Thanks for the help guys.

Hey there. Hopefully there's a Cubase guru out there that can help me out. I'm looking to randomize MIDI velocity data by a percentage.

I know that you can use the MIDI modifier insert to set random velocity values with a min/max setting, and I know you can use the logical editor to make all notes a random velocity between a min/max value. However, I'm looking to take velocity data that ALREADY exists, and randomize that by say 10%.

Basically, I want to keep the same groove, just humanize it a little.

Please say Cubase can pull this off!

Hi I have Mac OSX HD3 Protools HD 7.32 and C24.
I just bought a complete system and the c24 controller was like new, just demo used. The day after I had problems getting the stereo signal to my monitors. I know it should be wire 1 and 3. When I create a new session I create a stereo sesion. my digidesign 192 shows output 1 and 2 and console as well.

Another problem. I cant go into Vegas mode or use any of the master buttons, monitor mode, windows tools&functions etc. I tried to find any function key or whatever I need to press at the same time. The manual just says press mode button to switch between stereo or 5.1 etc. But I cant. The Mute is active and I cant inactivate and mono to :(

I cant do anything offline, test led or something nothing else. I was thinking if there is any way to reset the c24. I tried to reboot power off on...
I just sold my last expensive analog gear (Neotek Elite) for easy all in one studio. Ive been trying to get signal out or release the mute button for 40 hours now. I dont feel that this makes everything so mutch easier and direct. This was supposed to give me full time of composing insted of alot of hazzle and shit.

IAM NOT IMPRESSED......
Please help.
Kind regards
DSD is nonexistent. Tape comes in about one out of ten projects.

What I've noticed is that the sample rate doesn't matter. A good mix sounds great at 16bit 44.1khz and 96khz won't save a bad mix.

So my point is that sample rates are overrated.

I am having latency issues when over dubbing. I use direct monitoring when using protools but I am only using PT when I am at home and for mixing. I use reaper mostly for tracking. I have a few options. I am looking for the simplest option taking the least amount of set up and space. i use my eqiptment as a mobile rig

Set up. Steinberg MR816, Digimax FS 8, Project Mix I/O

Option 1

Mini Mixer (TRS) Use the monitor outs and the direct out (that I am recording) on the interface, routed to the mini mixer. And mute the channel in the DAW

Option 2

Same as 1 but instead of using the outs use a mic splitter before it hits my interface use an additional preamp in to mini mixer.
I have preamps and a rack splitter already.

Is there any advantage to this over option 1 other than additional volume control.

Option 3

Mixer (XLR), Route the mixer outs to the interface and the outs of the interface to the mixer. Monitor from the mixer.

Is there any basic mixer that will do this I don’t need any groups, sends, fx or any thing like that just in’s out’s and faders.

i see people using set up 3 all the time but normall in a stationary setup. i presume it is to take advantage of effects for the foldback mix.

im not sure it would be suitable for me due to the additional space needed

Any other ideas let me know thanks.

Presets on midi controller

So I finally started messing around with my Akai mpk 88 controller trying to set up presets because let's be honest, my workflow was not going anywhere just pushing random keys. Now I've managed to screw some stuff up within my controller as far as playability. I'm reading the manual but it's not very detailed in my opinion. I took the first preset which was called live lite and turned it into "Studio" meaning studio one 2 pro. Now I've got like 5 plus buttons to push, "Preset, edit, global, preview" modes. What do I do? I want to be able to record from my controller inside my daw and also use the arpegiator for tap tempo with my daw metronome. I'm very confused cause right now I messed something up to where on my keys they sound funky. When octave is set to 0 it's not really 0. They keys don't all play. When I go to -2 some more keys play. But I can never go up and hear anything anymore. So a +3 is useless as of now. What has happened? I want to be able to be inside a virtual instrument and use my knobs to turn the sound into my own. How do I do this? Right clicking on a knob and learn midi cc and moving a knob doesn't work.... Thanks for all who help me out.

Hi Forum

I have a tracking date tomorrow and will be using an A&H ZED R16. I also have access to a Focusrite Saffire audio interface that can plug into the lightpipe of the ZED and give an additional 8 i/o.

I am also using a bunch of external pre's like API and Neve.

I have two questions that are confusing me a little that I'd love some advice on. The first involves routing; if I use external preamps they have to plug into the line in on the ZED channels, and then go to firewire after the pre section of the ZED. Does anyone know the optimum gain staging for the ZED preamp to not color the signal too much? It seems that no gain is not enough level to go to the DAW, and i am wondering if anyone has used external pre's with the ZED and can advise how they gain stage the ZED pre.

The 2nd question is if I plug in the Focusrite to get another 8 channels for tracking, how do I monitor those channels if I do not monitor post DAW? The 16 channels on the ZED go to the stereo buss and have no latency as I am actually monitoring the analogue path before any conversion.. but how does that work on external pre's? Do I perhaps patch the analogue outs of the Focusrite to the aux return of the ZED, or even setup a sidecar mixer for those channels?

The demos and video demonstrations on these kits are pretty good. They have a nice sound and it seems like you can get moving pretty fast on mockups. My concern is there's only 7 velocity layers and the library is only 3 Gigs which is kinda small compared to Vienna Jazz or BFD.

Any input on their kits would be greatly appreciated.

So, I recently built my first hackintosh as a studio computer and I'm very happy with the result.

I got a great spec machine for a fraction of the price of a Mac Pro, and I built it into a 3u rack unit so it integrates well into the studio.

Yeah, there was some messing around configuration-wise but nothing too painful. The tonmacx86 forums are a great help for anyone considering this.

There are motherboards available still the have 2 x PCI slots so I was able to use my Core HD and Accel cards.

Anyway, just thought I'd share that.

Hi Everyone.

This is my first non-classified post.

I bought a Sonnettech Echo Express SE recently to host a UAD-2 card and send my video monitor through for my July 2012 Macbook Pro 13". I run Logic Pro 9 and Wavelab 4.0 through Windows XP (2002 Service Pack 3) on Parallels Desktop 8.

Sonnet - Echo Express SE Thunderbolt PCIe Expansion Chassis

It works. I've been waiting years to do an upgrade, and I never expected to be running on a laptop, but it's working. I might get mac mini in the future.

Anyway, this post is a warning to you if you are thinking about using the Sonnet EE SE - it is GREAT... it works, but the FAN is INSANELY LOUD. I have emailed tech support and the best they could do for me was suggest I unplug the fan. I did that, but between the UAD-2 and the video monitor tasks, that sucker gets hot, both the UA card and the Sonnet guts.

So I searched gearslutz and sure enough someone found a great improvement, to use a fractal 50mm fan. I ordered one from Newegg for less than $10 shipped, and it arrived today. It is installed and cut the noise down SIGNIFICANTLY.

There is still audible noise. Probably more than the rated 20dB because the case is amplifying it - it's mounted on a plate that's just making it louder. Probably dampening that plate with some dense rubber could help out. They have that product for cars, maybe I'll try that out. I think that's the majority of the fan noise. By itself (not mounted), the fan seems nearly silent.

Soo.. the stock fan is rated at between 7-10 CFM airflow depending on the voltage and amperage - I don't know the spec for the Sonnet. And 29dBA noise.
::EVERCOOL Thermal Co., Ltd. ::

The Fractal fan is rated for 7.6 max airflow.. so on the low side, and 20dBA noise.
Silent Series R2 50mm - Fractal Design

Now that my AC unit has shut off, I clearly hear how noisy it is. Welp, back to under the desk... Still a GIANT improvement.

If you have found a better solution, please share!

So I was wondering, do you guys have suggestions for some good plugins, that do the job? I'm currently using Guitar Rig 5 and Waves/Oxford plugins on OS X, think my setup will be in Mainstage/Logic, and need it for both live vocals, bass guitar, electric guitar, electric violin, and whatever else I'll be hooking up to my soundcard...

A friend asked me to recommend a bare bones DAW for mixing some basic rock tunes. I guess someone is going to send him stems, and he's going to mix them (no tracking).
The kicker is, he's running my old PPC G5, and I'm having trouble thinking of what to recommend he pick up. He didn't mention price, but I would imagine the cheaper, the better - he's not looking to get into recording as anything more than a hobby. Probably something off of eBay or the like.

I would normally say pro tools - maybe one of the M Powered suites, or PT Express, but I don't know that any of that runs on a PPC Mac, and besides, he doesn't want the hardware (dongle).

Some light version of Cubase or Sonar maybe? Traktion? Garage Band?

I've been a Pro Tools guy so long that I don't have a clue what's available for the casual engineer.

Any ideas?

Sound comes out of my mh mixer as "main" is selected on monitor controller, just fine, so my routing can't be too far off.
However, only midi plays through my "daw". I suppose, because I am unable to change the output on midi files in logic to an assigned "out", so it is defaulted, as stereo out.
When bounced, all I get is the midi file and nothing else.

Just looking for some opinions here. I'm about to drop a considerable chunk of change (for me at least) on a new plugin, and I've narrowed it down to Nexus 2 and Camel Audio Alchemy.

I've never actually used either, but I've researched them both pretty extensively by listening to demos and watching Youtube videos, and I'm pretty familiar with what they're both capable of.

The music I make is generally in the trance/hard trance/hardstyle genres, so that means I'm focusing a lot on melody and BIG sounds (mostly ITB). I know that Nexus 2 is fairly limited in it's ability to manipulate/design your own sounds, but people seem to rave about the excellent quality right out of the box.

Alchemy seems that it will allow for much more in terms of creative possibilites, but that I may need to work a lot more to achieve the massive/interesting sounds I'm looking for. Also, it comes with a substantially smaller amount of presets as compared with Nexus. I am primarily a preset tweaker (although I'm capable of creating sounds from scratch--I just would rather spend my time arranging).

I already have Komplete 8, so I have Kontakt, which I'm thinking might be pretty similar to the sampling capabilities of Alchemy, but I don't really know.

Have you guys used either (or both, hopefully) of these programs? Is there one you'd recommend based on the music I'm making? And do you feel like Nexus will pigeonhole me too much because of a lack of sound variations (in your opinion of course)?

Would very much appreciate any input you guys might have!

(Also, if it helps at all, I'm using Logic 9, and the VSTs I use frequently are Massive, V-station, Kontakt, some sample packs, and the native Logic plugins)

Hey I just got a brand new orion and a brand new mac mini 17 running 10.8.3
out of the box the orion sounds good on the dac side. When I try to record all I get is distortion and like an eventide harmonizer kind of sound I reinstall the driver and did all the antelope and pro tools 10 instructions for system tweaks .
For a couple of hours all was well, I was recording and it sounded good, and then right in the middle of laying down bass tracks horrible sounding distortions return(this has to be driver related). I am evaluating this product for potential purchase . I am sure antelope will get back to me. I just wanted to check and see if other users are having any kind of issues running the orion with pro tools 10.3.5 ??? do others have a similar system running on os 10.8.3 ?

I've finally decided to get rid of Vista once and for all. I had naturally assumed I would upgrade to Windows 7, but can't help but notice that so many on here seem to be using XP instead of the newer versions. Is it just a matter of economics or is there something I should know before making my decision? Is it perhaps a more stable platform for recording or are users just more comfortable with it? I actually use 3 different computers here at home and have all 3 (XP, Vista 64 bit, and 7) between them. I haven't had any problems adapting so I am wondering if XP might actually be better for recording and, if so, for what reasons. Thanks for any good information you might supply me with before it's time to pull the trigger. Thanks.

I found this discount deal on NUKLEAR. For those who don't know it (it's not very well known I guess) it's an unusual sounding soft synth VST that uses something called pulsar train synthesis to generate it's sounds. Anyway check it out here.

I was using my Saffire locked with my API A2D through S/PDIF and it was working fine. Recently I added Symphony i/o as a standalone converter for my Saffire. Both are connected through ADAT and A2D is still connected through S/PDIF. let me explain below what I tried.

Step 1: Saffire slaved through S/PDIF and locked to A2D, then Symphony slaved through ADAT to Saffire. (Result: heavy rain of clicks n pops)

Step 2: Symphony on internal clock and Saffire slaved through ADAT to Symphony (Result: obvious clicks n pops but lesser than heavy rain)

Note: I still have not tried Word Clock BNC cable option yet. I m thinking to slave A2D to Symphony through Word Clock and then slave Saffire to A2D through S/PDIF as Saffire has no Word Clock IN/OUT.

A friend recently got a MOTU 828mk3 and is using the USB connection into a PC running W7 64bit. The hardware seems fine and powers on OK. Also, the drivers apparently install OK as no error messages are given during installation and it all the usual "successful installation" dialogue appears. However, plugging in the 828 doesn't make Windows do its usual "searching for drivers" dance, and when looking in the Device Manager there are no MOTU drivers listed anywhere. There are a few MOTU programs in the Start Menu but they either don't launch when clicked or show a "No MOTU device found".

From what I can make out either: 1) the drivers appear to be installing but Windows can't read them, or 2) he drivers aren't installing and the installation process is getting it wrong. Has anyone else had this same problem? Or can anyone tell me if there's a way manually search for the drivers or force Windows to recognise the drivers?

BTW, have reinstalled drivers multiple times with USB cable in/out/in a cup of tea, all drivers are latest from MOTU, and have tried disabling antivirus while installing (it's a bit of an XP era solution but worth a shot... not that it worked!). Have also logged this with MOTU support but been told to expect a reply within 1-2 working days so not 'til next week now :-(

EDIT: Have found what appear to be the drivers in the correct place in the filesystem: C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore

There are two folders here: one starts motubus.inf and the other starts motuafw64.inf.

The motubus.inf folder contains:

motubus (Security Catalog)
Motubus (Setup Information)
motubus.PNF (Precompiled Setup Information)
motubus64.sys (SYS file)

The motubusfwa64.inf folder contains:

motufwa64 (Security Catalogue)
MOTUFWA64 (Setup Information)
motufwa64.PNF (Precompiled Setup Information)

I have a large Pro Tools Mix +5 system. External SCSI 15000rpm Audio drive
has died and I am thinking of changing to an external SSD system via one of the G4s firewire 400 ports.

Anyone doing this?... I have been told it should be faster and more efficient than my old SCSI/Apto card system being that firewire can pass blocks of 400mbps as opposed to SCSI managing only up to 120mbps.

Am running OS9.2.2. on a G4 Quicksilver single processor 933mKz. At the moment am running a second internal for the audio which of course is too slow to run 32+ tracks.

Must be someone out there who's ventured into this!...?...

Hi there,

I have a question here...

With a friend, we just bought an analog board.
Until now we used to work All In The Box with ProTools10 and a lot of plugs, but with small interfaces etc.

Now we have a lot of preamps & EQ's prior to AD conversion and a wonderful summing mixer. All we need is an interface between the beast and the computer...

I was thinking that 32 i/o would be great (don't think I'll ever record more than 32 channels at a time), but what?

I don't really want to go for the Avid HD IO, which are quite expensive... We have a PT with the CPTK so, with the aggregate, with could go for another brand and still have the VCA's, and all the useful stuff from HD version :)

I was thinking about RME Converters and interfaces, but don't know what to choose...
And I just fell onto the Orion32 by Antelope.

I wouldn't rely on the USB Interface of this, but n my memory, Antelope had wonderful clocks, so if the converters are up to the reputation, maybe this converter with a Madi Interface would do the job nicely...

What do you think?

Thanks

I'm not the only one either. Just browse any online shops such as Amazon and read all the 1 and 2 star reviews. The majority of reviews are always really low for iLok.

I'd be really curious to know what A-List engineers / producers think about iLok.

Hello,
this matter concerns me for some time now. It's about snare widenning and I do not mean the usual techniques of stereo imaging, doubling. panning or reverb to make it bigger.
What I refer to is that the initial transient of the snare hits in the center and gradually the sound opens across the stereo field.
I've heard it in many songs and different music styles but a clear example can be heard in : TUS - ?????? | TUS - Hsouna - Official Video Clip (HQ) - YouTube (Don't mind the song just go for the snare sound at 3:50 it sounds very clear).

1. Is it automation? 2. A plug in? 3. Another technique?

I've tried sidechaining a mono snare track with a stereo one with reverb but I don't get the gradual opening.
And if this is automation how does it work? I work with Nuendo 4 and I think I can only automate the panning from left to right not the opening from mono to stereo.

Thank you for replying...

So, I'm finally going to make a few more upgrades to my Gateway DX4200-09. It originally came with the Phenom 1 quad core cpu (1.8 GHZ) and draws 95 watts. My power supply is 300 watts. I can buy the latest Phenom 2 quad core 3.4 Ghz for $94.99 but have been advised that I should upgrade the power supply since it draws 125 watts. Or I can buy the Athlon 2 tri-core (3.2 Ghz/95 watts) for $69.00. Both will fit in my current AM3 socket. Anyone care to offer up some good advice. I am using Reaper and don't plan on doing anything too major (10-12 tracks and not a lot of effects). I would appreciate any input since I am still really new to the DAW world. Thanks.
I know you could say the signal clipping 5db and that would make sense but what does the % mean?

I use ableton and I see that the overdrive effect has a "drive" in % as opposed to the saturation effect which has a drive in Db.
Alright so Ive been lucky enough to purchase a copy of the Waves Mercury Native bundle and have aquired several other individual and bundle forms of other software compressors, eqs, and etc over the past several years. I still till this day have always wondered what everybody else out there has thought of to be the best software "in the box" compressor. There are some great ones out there and they do a great job of emulating their analog counterparts. Having Mercury I own every Waves compressor there is from the CLA-76 2A 3A(Universal Audio), Puigchild 660 & 670(Fairchild), V-Comp(Neve 2254), SSL Comp(Original SSL G Comp), API 2500(Self Ex), H-Comp, RComp, and the C4&C6. I have also bought the Softube FET Compressor which sounds amazing, the Sonnox bundle with the Dynamics Compressor which creates great punch and snap in snares and kicks, Sonalksis Bundle with the Uber compressor which i can only describe as phat sounding and loud, T-Racks CS with a Fairchild model, and a LA-2A model. I havent boughten any UAD plugs yet but a Satelite or PC card is next for me definitely. So with this being said I would love to hear everybodies opinions, experiences, experiments, and comments on what compressors they like, dislike, use, or dont use. Have fun posting, enjoy and as always peace and prosperity to all the fellow musicians out there. kfhkh

I hope someone can help me here...

I updated my system to OS 10.6.8 (thinking it would make it more stable), however, now my Powercore FW has stopped working.

I updated it to the latest drivers, installed all the necessary downloads and when I look into the powercore application, most of the plugins are "not available" aside from a few which state "bundled"

When I try to use them in Logic (8.0.2) they all come up as "Disabled" and I get this message from Console:

"The communication between the Plug-In and the PowerCore driver failed. To reactivate the PowerCore plugin, save your project first and reopen it to continue to work.	Logic Pro"

Would anyone have any idea why this is happening and how I'd remedy this?!

Any help would be highly appreciated!

all the best

One thing I cannot find information on is how to expand the number of inputs in the Focusrite Forte interface. I was looking at the ART TubeOpto8 or the Focusrite Octopre mkii but the Forte does not have an ADAT connection. Is it possible to use these with the Forte to get 8 mic pres or is there another option to expand?

I want to expand so I could be able to mic up a drum set. I DON'T want to have to sell my Forte to get something that works with ADAT but if there is no other way, I would like suggestions.
Thanks

I'm using Cubase 5 for Midi and audio sequencing, and i'm controlling a few outboard synths via a Motu Midi Xpress.

Everything is fine except for the timing of external midi seems to slowly slip out of time over the course of a session, and i need to reopen the session to return it to the correct time, before it inevitably slides out again.
Obviously this is causing some amount of frustration. Has anyone dealt with this/know how to fix it?

Cubase, for the past couple of months, has decided that it does not want me to do anything productive; i.e, tracking, mixing, inserts, volume adjustments, eat a sammich, nothing. As soon as one of these operations is performed, my asio meter goes ape-shit. It lags to the point where even if I do eventually remove my inserts/sends/etc, it still remains slow, nearly frozen. I'm running Cubase 5. My sessions aren't usually TOO heavy: anywhere from 6-8 instrumental tracks usually.. and vox vary due to arrangement. I've optimized my PC for DAW related functions, ran virus scans, uninstall/reinstalled Cubase. I'm not sure what more I can do to aid this issue with my asio meter.

Specs:
Windows XP Professional
Windows Service Pack 3
AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 6000+
3.01 GHz, 3.25 GB RAM

I'm using a Steinberg UR28M interface as my soundcard for playback. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

So it's the last day to buy this plugin for half price.
I always buy the TDM versions as I have a TDM system.
Also, if I ever go to a AAX system, I'll have these in place for AAX DSP.
Anyway, is this plugin worth it? I already own their Compressorbank and own some top notch compressor plugins like SSL Duende, UBK, Waves Compressors, Softube CL1b etc...
I do love their Analog Channel as I have that and a couple other plugins they have as it is a great company.

What do you guys love/hate about this plugin.
Thanks,

Good day gentlemen - kfhkh

I am very proud to present the Magic AB plugin -
its the no-brainer way to do A-B mix referencing inside the DAW -

This is something i have struggled with for years, as there is no particularly elegant way to Reference the DAW mix, with several other tracks instantly. so ultimately, i decided to design a plugin myself that did exactly what i wanted.

Just pop the Magic AB plugin at the end of your master bus channel (or before your room acoustic plugins such as ARC) and load up the tracks you want into MAGIC AB. from there you can set the start points to where you want in your reference tracks, loop a section, adjust the relative volumes, and then enjoy A-Bing your mix to other tracks.

For myself, i think one of the most important aspects of ABing is the time it takes to switch between tracks, the longer it takes, the less information my brain can hold - the quicker the better for critical evaluation. So with MAGIC AB it can be instant, or if you prefer you can use the Cross fade function to fade to silence between tracks.

Here's what the GUI looks like -

and there is a video guide here -

here's the rest of the features list etc -
and it is MAC/PC - VST/AU/RTAS/AAX 32/64 bit so everyone can enjoy

web page - Magic AB - Sample Magic

Magic AB is both an indespensible mixing tool and a serious workflow improver that allows the producer to:
Perform instant AB references: to compare the track you are working on in your DAW with a commercially produced reference track. Like the production values of Daft Punk? Or Pink Floyd? Or Nirvana? No problems – import your chosen reference tracks into Magic AB and then flick between them and your own in-progress track using a single mouse click.
Hone in on the details: play/cue the reference track from the part you want to hear and loop the section you want to focus on – there’s no need for tiresome rewinding and endless internal waveform navigation.
Compare multiple mixes quickly and simply: create and save your own ‘go-to’ playlists to radically speed up mixing and mastering.
Balance the relative volume of mixes: so that you’re always comparing like with like. This is a particularly fucntion for mastering sessions.
Give your ears a chance to recalibrate: with manually changeable crossfade times. Flip in an instant, or allow a transition of up to 2000ms.

i really hope it helps everyone get their mixes done faster and better than ever.
if anyone has questions, i'll be around to answer them.
regards
Marc Adamo

Heya guys, I'd love your thoughts on the benefits/differences between Ableton's Push, Maschine, and the Akai MPC studio.

All three obviously have their own DAW/sequencers, and I'd consider Ableton superior to the NI or Akai sequencers, but how do each of the controllers fare when used in say, Logic, or Reason or Cubase, and NOT in their respective sequencers?

I'd love to test drive each one for a month... but can only afford one of them.

Background: I use Ableton in the studio, mostly for personal/artist projects, but I use Logic and Reason professionally for underscore/jingle writing, and Cubase for vocal or drum sessions. I'd imagine Push would be great to incorporate Ableton into my live work. (Pardon the pun)

I own Komplete, and love the NI stuff, and I think I'd get a lot out of Maschine, but is it really only worth it to use the Maschine sequencer? Is it limiting it to NOT use the sequencer? I haven't worked out whether the sequencer rewires into say Logic or ProTools etc. or whether you go back and forth.

And then there's the Akai... another sequencer to learn. But such a history of beatmaking... Problems of convergence! lol

I dunno... they all look inspiring.

Thoughts? Anyone using more than one? Anyone triggering Ableton clips with Maschine? Anyone playing Kontakt's pianos with an MPC?

Cheers! freshflowe

So I'm one of those people who doesn't always trust computers that I did not build myself, or at least have some hand in. I've been lugging around my desktop rig for gigs lately with plans to build a rackmount machine once I had the funds. I entertained the idea of a small form factor case but it just doesn't appeal to me.

I've recently got my hands on a 6U Roll-X by SKB and am in the market for a rackmount case for my new build. I'd prefer something in the 3U - 4U range, and have looked around quite a bit. My main issue is that of depth, as most cases that I'm finding on big sites like newegg and tiger direct are too deep for the Roll-X. It can only support cases up 17.75" long.

I have found one site that has a number of cases available that fit my requirements, but I can't find too many reviews on them. (Plink USA)

I'm willing to give them a shot, but I was wondering if anyone else has been in my shoes before, or if there are perhaps better options out there for what I'm wanting to do.

Here's a link to the SKB case if anyone wants a closer look 6U Roll-X Rackmount Case

TL; DR: Need Rackmount Computer Case/Server Chassis, 3-4U, Less than 17.75" deep

Thanks!

Hey everyone!

I record all my band's tunes at my home studio before having them professionally mixed. It's saved me a ton of money on plugins which is great!

Now here's the problem, we did a cover tune just for fun which I don't want to pay to have mixed. I've managed to get everything properly mixed myself, but I have no good plugins for the keyboard tracks (I recorded MIDI tracks). The song is Pink Floyd's High Hopes (to give you an idea of the piano sound we want).

Any good free piano plugins out there? Only ones I can find totally stink!

Thanks!

Hi Guys,

I have been impressed with what I've read / heard of the Mixosaurus "Kit A" virtual drum kit plug-in. It's one kit only, sampled in ridiculous detail for a total sample size of over 100GB. (See mixosaurus.com for info...)

Recently, the CEO and developer announced that for personal reasons, Mixosaurus would be closing shop and not producing any more sampled drum products.

They are selling their remaining Kit A inventory (the only version still in stock being an internal hard drive), at half price.

I am very tempted to buy it... but equally I'm concerned that it may not remain compatible with future versions of NI Kontakt (which is the host it runs in), and that it may end up being an investment that suddenly I can't use.

What do you think about this? Will there always be a way to use the samples even after a few years when Kontakt has evolved and changed, or am I better to go with a living, supported product such as Ocean Way Drums?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Cheers,
Mike

Recently I've been having some issues with my MPK49 in ableton.

When I leave the record on a track, then record something with Midi then take it off it comes out way diffrent. (like a sequencer, sound quality, velocity, level, etc...)

I made sure I was on Ableton Preset, I checked my mod wheels, checked to see if I had the arp on, control bank, even restarted it (Unpluging it and then replugging it back in)

The issue is still at hand, I have the latest version of Ableton 9.0.4 (I believe) I don't know if I did something to my keyboard or not... Lately I've been setting a notepad on it(on the pitch wheel and mod wheel area), and my phone (On the drumpad)... but I highly doubt that is the issue.

Anyone got any ideas? I believe I'm still under warranty but it would be a pain to go through with all that.

Hey guys,
I just got Iris and want to use the aif files that come stock with Live 9 Suite.

According to the Iris Manual, wav and aiff files are acceptable formats.

http://www.izotope.com/products/audi...Help%20PDF.pdf

I've heard that aiff files are basically the same as aif files. Is this an Iris bug, then? Or, if the formats are indeed different, is there a nifty device that I would be able to use (preferrably a slick plugin that I could open with my host DAW) that could quickly do the conversion for me?

Thanks a bunch,

Hey guys, newbie here, and i really need ur help. Been trying to install Discs 1&2 of Digidesign Strike Virtual Drummer version1.0, and it keeps installing files in the wrong places on the Mac HD. Having to use the Mac HD until I can get a new external HD in the next two weeks. Background: I got an iMac (10.4.11) with protools 7.3 on it, got the DIGI 003 Factory deal a few years ago and virtually havent really used it until now. Im trying to install Digidesign (not Avid) Strike and everythings being installed in the wrong places on the HD. This last time i tried creating a folder (Strike) to change install location of the files. The Strike files on the HD are as follows:

com.digidesign.strike.plist located in Mac HD>library>preferences
Strike Content 1 &2 Setup.pkg located in Mac HD>Library>Reciepts
Strike data.1-6.big located in Mac HD>Library>App Support>digidesign>Strike
Strike Setup is located in Mac HD>Library>Reciepts
Strike.dpm is located in Mac HD>library>App Support>Digidesign>Plug-ins

Are these the correct locations they should be in?? The basic install didnt put them there the other two times i tried, this last time i created a folder (Strike) and the files ended up in the above locations. My question is this: Are they in the correct places?? I know when ive loaded PT, theres nothing under audiosuite or in the inserts on instrument tracks. No Strike. Am I missing something obvious here?? Please guys, any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks

Alright dudes, I've totally decided against East West products thanks to many people here explaining their problems of spending hundreds of dollars for buggie shit and no refund or tech help.... so eff that.

The next logical step is to spend thousands on specific orchestra chamber libraries that run on separate little bundles for my DAW (logic).

SO!

This is going to be the set up;

~Logic 9.

~Orchestral Tools, "String Runs"- looks awesome... Jason Graves uses it... Tomb Raider and Dead Space soundtracks ruled pretty hard.

~Orchestral Tools, "Berlin Woods"

.... the product info says they both work with the free Kontakt Player 5 or Kontakt 5.

So! What are the differences between KP5 (free) and K5? I read that the free version lets you play non-licensed software for like 15 mins without recording it. Then again if you upgrade from the free version to the full Kontakt 5 version its only 115! Wow! Awesome! idk if Orchestral Tools is licensed... and... idk... this is all just new and stupid to understand.

Also... all of you who have hard-ons for synths and whacked out drum samples that you point and click in your beat laboratory need not reply about how "You should get the full version of Komplete! It's only $500.00 worth of 9,000 samples you'll never use!"

Someone out there with experience in this crazy "I'm going to **** up somehow and buy the most wrong, non-refundable product available" **** sandwich of a software world.... please help.

Hey everyone I'm new here, but I've been lurking around on this site for months trying to sort out my problems. No such luck however. I'm running Cubase 5 on Windows XP using mostly Waves plug ins and here's where my problems start. I seem to be running out of ASIO time, and I dont know why. I have 4gb of ram to play with and I've used CCCleaner to shut stuff down at startup so there's nothing running to suck up all the ram.

A friend of mine who also runs Cubase recommended that I freeze the tracks when after I get the sound I'm looking for, and that should cut down the CPU usage. Only problem in doing that, is that after I freeze the track it won't play back the audio.

Another thing that happens is that no matter how many times I save it, or how many presets I create, once I shut Cubase down and come back to it later it resets all my VST plug ins to default.

Please help I'm literally going bald from ripping my hair out.

Good Morning, afternoon...evening?

I own Digi's Eleven Rack and I'm absolutely in love with it, the sounds are great and, aside from winning the lottery and buying all those amps, seems to be a great solutions for my needs. I also own Guitar Rig 5, it has some absolutely crazy possibilities.

So, here is my problem, when I'm playing outside of Pro Tools, let's say I just want to open up Guitar Rig's standalone version and use their effects, how do I get a dry signal coming from the Eleven Rack? I know how to set the inputs in Pro Tools, perhaps this is as good as it gets, but it would be really awesome to have that dry signal outside Pro Tools as well. I've been strongly considering buying another interface...but that just seems like quitting.

Any help, from all you fine people in forum land, would be greatly appreciated,
Sorry for being scatter-brained, I'm buzzing off three energy drinks hittt

First post here, need same....Trying to explain....
Oxygen 25 connected with camera connection kit to Ipad 2. Mobilepre USB connected to MacBook, working fine with Ignite, Garage Band, etc.
I tried to record a track in garage band, opening a real instrument track and playing Ipad, connecting its audio output to mobilepre line input. It works, GarageBand in my MacBook records the Ipad audio, but while playing and recording I can't hear any sound, nor in my studio monitors nor in my headphones (connected to the outputs of the mobilepre). Anymore, I tried to do the same connecting to the line input my yamaha workstation PSR 1500. This time worst, no sound, and no record at all...
Another question related. When I record voice in Garage Band and want to listen the other tracks only in my headphones while singing, monitors doesn't mute. I obviously can turn off the volume of each monitor, but I think must be a better option...
Sorry for the long text...and perhaps the silly questions...

I've done a fair bit of searching and don't seem to find any other forums discussing this specific issue, so I'm hoping it's just me and someone can help!

I just moved into a studio with a buddy of mine, and we decided the best course of action was to use his computer and 828 MK II as the primary interface. Everything works great, except for getting any Windows system sounds (or iTunes, etc) to play back out of the MOTU. He's using Windows 7 x64. The Main L/R outs and all others work just fine in our DAWs, but not in Windows. When you select them as the output in the Windows audio mixer, the VU meter next to the volume slider doesn't even light up. The way he's been getting around it is to take the headphone out on the front of his computer and Y-cabling it into the front inputs on the 828, and then sets up a cue mix in the MOTU software to get it to route those front inputs straight back to the outs. It works, but it feels stupid and wrong when I know I should be able to go straight out of the outputs on the back of that damn interface.

He swears you can't do it, and I swear that there has to be a way to. Anyone have some insight?

I don't want to record on my laptop
I have a mac desktop with snow leopard I am good with that
but I do want to use my laptop to perform
I have the mks sensation which has great EP's

I want to use it in conjunction with overloud
through protools
but whenever I do a big crescendo many notes with the sustain pedal on
the cpu overloads.
It doesent crash but it does temporarily shut down.

also when I play Alicia keys for kontakt
it pops and crackles even when playing sparsley

will buying more ram solve this?

I can afford 100 bucks for new ram
or I heard about people putting in a faster amd processor in this computer
it is not supported by Toshiba and it is a hotter chip but people say it works and fits

or do I need a new laptop

I really don't have the money for a new laptop
but if I have to can you make a low cost suggestion?

I wouldn't want to spend more than 500 on a new laptop
again I don't need to do any major recording just want to play a piano plugin live

Ok so I just bought a Computer Music Mag thinking I'm going to get satson free. Little did I realize that this was some stripped down version that has a lot of the features missing and also comes without the mix buss plug. So here's my question? So is this CM version sonically identical to the Full version with the Fat option turned off? Also if I put these on all my channels will I get the console cross talk characteristics and non linearities or is that only on the full version? Finally the gain knob on this doesn't have output compensation so I basically put a trim plug after the Satson CM and trimmed down the same amount that I've gained it up. I'm assuming this achieves the same end result as output compensation. I do however like the Hi and low pass filters which are very musical.

Also as a side note, do any of you use the CM studio set of plugin's that come as a free download if you buy any CM mag? How good are these and would you recommend any of them?

I have just £200 to spend on a motherboard and processor. £220 is my absolute max. I can sort the rest of my pc out no worries its just the chipset advice please.

I will be using Ableton 8 suite, cubase 5, Adobe audition and vst's but at a learning stage after completing a digital audio course so wont be pushing my system any time soon in terms of workload.

So... im currently looking at an i3 with the view to upgrade to an i7 in about 12 months. can anyone suggest a good chipset combo to start with particularly the motherboard (sata 6 usb 3 are my preference). and maybe point out any pitfalls with the whole "upgrade your processor only" route.

Im a bit of a mental mess at the moment so im not really doing a good job of scouring forums in the small amount of time i seem to have. i have looked but i apologise if i have missed a similar or related post.

update: ok so scan uk are willing to give me an i5 3570k with a z77 mobo for £220. but the mobo is a basic gigabyte and its not the form factor i wanted, not that that matters too much to be honest.

There´s always things in technology in the DAW world that gives us great promises and hope for a better day, but waiting for these technologies is so frustrating.

Is it because they are announced too soon and developers and manufacturers can´t implement them quickly enough? Or is it because they don´t believe in them and fight the change or are just lazy?

I´m sure the ones that will embrace these new technologies would make a LOT OF MONEY!!! But it seems they don´t like money.

First there was 64-bit. Thank god it´s finally here, although even to this day still not complitely. Many developers still making them. This change surely separated the men from the mice. The wait was so frustrating and it took many many years. But now it´s here and it´s the best thing! boing

Second there is Thunderbolt. It was announced like two years ago? But still there isn´t even one Thunderbolt audio interface on the market. Just few adapter and separate box solutions, not true Thunderbolt interfaces. My USB slots are full. My Thunderbolt slots are empty. Don´t have FireWire slots anymore and wouldn´t even want to buy a FireWire interfaces anymore, because FireWire is dead. Don´t want cumbersome PCI-E cards. Don´t want crappy performance USB 2.0 cards. I believe we are still going to be waiting 1-3 years for Thunderbolt. Sad but true. gruudge

So what´s the next thing we´ll be waiting impatiently? I´m sure there will be something.

Hello everyone!

So I'm currently lost in a jungle because there is so much information considering everything, so I tought I just ask pro's, who's about to become bro's in future!

So I work in audiovisual product studio, and we are planing on buying new gear for everyone, audio, video, wacoms, etc.

I currently have fast desktop PC, and a pretty decent laptop.
Zoom H4n witch we use for field recordings etc
Rode NTG-3 shotgun mic, long rode pole (use it to connect to zoom)

Akai APC40 and Akai MPK mini (I produce music as well)

So I am considering that I will need to fill up that 15k with decent gear witch might serve me in future, but currently I have no idea what I might need, maybe I haven't tought about something important etc.

I need help choosing audio interface, for recording, playing live with APC is NI audio 6 any good? By features it fits my current needs but I think that might be not enough in future, so its better to buy something that lasts without need to re-buy new gear :)

Next thing is monitors, seen a big discussions about active/passive, any ideas?

Maybe you would recomment me any other things witch i might have overlooked?

Thanks for support!

Hello everybody !

I am in a need for a little help.
I`m composing music for a film, the job is done and i have a full timeline.
a few days ago,the director gave me a newer, edited version of the film.
lots of things moved around quite drastically, which was known from the
get go.but its still a big PITA.
scenes where shortened, and now i have to fix things up by moving the
whole block of music further and recompose the empty space.

up till now, everything i finish,i lock to SMPTE to avoid stuff moving when
changing the tempo.

yesterday when i unlocked the regions and moved the tempo track, all hell broke loose !

regions jumped out of the grid, which was to be expected.
but my really big problem was that, events within the regions moved around
in the region itself...

this is a huge issue for me.
I have a lot of tempo graph work going on.
and 89 channels.

I am looking for a way to group the tempo track with the regions on the tracks,so i could move them around without hindering me work.

and if its not possible, then something like "insert bar/time" like in DP.

any help would be highly appreciated !

Thanks ahead

(by the way i love uad plugs i bought alot of them and will keep them)

but i think im totally missing something. i hate having to screw with the apollo mixer and and bring the faders down and up in pro tools and the apollo software back and forth every time i want to listen to playback. and there is a ton more latency and even in the analog mode with the d-box there is still some form of latency that i cant figure out and it's driving me crazy. and i know it has alot to do with pt 10 and the delay compensation. but it's just not working at the moment any ideas. to help me out

I need a USB board with at least 20 channels that simultaneously send all to the computer. What I've noticed by browsing Sweetwater is that only the 16-channel boards send all the channels to the computer. The 24-ch boards only send the busses and things like that.

Technically, I don't need a board, but something that can take analog inputs and send each channel to be armed for recording inside the computer. I'm using Reaper as my DAW (LOVE it!). Right now I'm using a Mackie Onyx 1640 which has 16 channels. Just give me 4 more channels and I'm good! This project is for my church so they're looking to get a new interface for this project. I appreciate all the help slutz!

Hi,

I am trying to copy a project from protools to Logic. I have all the plugins working in both hosts, and I have transferred the audio files.

I'm having trouble in Protools seeing what the plugin settings are. In Logic, I can switch the view on a plugin and see all the setting values. Some plugins in protools show the values when you mouse over the knob graphic, but others like Massey CT5 do not. Is there a way to see what the plugin values are so I can copy them into Logic.

I realize I could eyeball them, but I'd rather just have the settings as they existed in the original protools project.

thanks

What can be said to be a "pure" benefit of 64-bit (vs 32) as far as audio computer is concerned?

Main benefit, as we all seem to know, seems to be the option for oodles of RAM. Other than RAM, 64-bit seems to hold a small advantage of computing speed over 32-bit (?). There is also the issue of however an application can read both 32- and 64 bit plugins and add-ins. But that seems to be more of a compatibility drawback than a benefit.

Other than the above, I suspect I belong to a large crowd who is lesser informed about this. Me - and many others - still has the option to buy the 32-bit version of the latest update to our DAW choice.

If we don't need oodles of RAM, and we want to avoid dubious stability of 64/32 bit bridging ... what other "pure" benefits of 64 bit will we miss out on, if we refuse to go 64 - for now?

Hi everybody,

I am having a problem with one fader in the Extender of a Mackie control Universal Pro.

The problem is:

Fader one: When I move the fader from Cubase/Logic, etc, the fader moves in the Mackie... But when I move it in the mackie that doesn't affect the DAW, returning to the original point in the mackie (because it is readint the position from the daw)

I took it to a mackie official service in London, and after they worked on it and tried it with tracktion on a pc, it worked fine there, so they said it would be a problem with my mac and set up of my daw/ mac.

I don't think that is the reason and that is because:

In my mac I have Cubase 7, pro tools, logic and Ableton live (all originals, no problems of cracks here)

In every daw I have the same problem except in Ableton Live, where that fader its working...

But, Something quite important that I have notices is that when moving the rest of the faders, midi in and midi out signal appears constantly at the daw (cubase, logic, live, etc) but when moving that faulty fader, midi in moves constantly but midi out moves intermittently, on and off. That I think its the reason..... Maybe the midi out reads whats in the daw and copies it in mackie, but as midi out its not working properly in that fader, it cannot read the information properly and therefore returns to it original point.

I wonder many things.

1)Why it works in tracktion and live?
2)Is it possible that a midi msg worksat its 50%? Being digital I though or it work or it doesn't but not just "it works more or less"

To the first question I think that maybe tracktion and live are more sensitive and even if it doesn't work properly it can still read , and in the other daws just if it doesnt work on it 100% it is unable to read it...

Those are my thoughts, but I am lost in all this...

Any help, advice or thought it is really more than appreciated.

As you can see, this is driving me nuts!

Thanks so much!!

All the best!

Hi all,

I finally decided to quit using my gear as VST instruments in cubase, and it's pretty amazing. Even though my midi signal goes through four devices and so my audio cables go through 3 (Firestation to Motu 828mk3 to monitor) ... the lag is basically zero.

However, I have one synth that will only sync the LFO/ARP via midi-clock, and when I enable this feature in cubase it starts out very snappy... then decides to add 1/4 second of lag from key press to noise. This is really annoying.

As soon as a unclick send midi-timecode through the midi-port, the lag returns to zero. Then if I wait 10 minutes and re-click send midi clock in cubase sync prefs, it's good as new.

Anyone have ideas here? I'm using an M-Audio Fast Track Pro as my midi port, but it seems to work fine. MOTU 828 and that seems fine too... so I assume it is cubase?

Trying to do a "Bounce In Place" type thing in Pro Tools 9 (on a Mac).

Have a lead vocal that got Melodyne treatment. Want to get it bounced to it's own track now.

No matter how I route it I'm finding I have to turn the fader of the source track down a good bit, otherwise it clips the new track.

Is there an incredibly easy way to do this and have it the EXACT same level as the original source track?

Hello, this is my first post on this forum as i haven't really even progressed into getting any betters speakers than the ones i originally purchased 2 years ago (Logitech 540's) which have now got superseded by 530's? But basically till now they have been good enough for me but now i have seen how good a decent pair of speakers are im looking for better.

Im about to get some BX5 D2's because of the good reviews given and they are going to suit my usage quite well, the only problem im having is wiring them up. I don't have alot of money so i can't just go out and get all the best gear, intially i was going to get a sound card http://www.amazon.co.uk/Asus-Xonar-5...rds=sound+card which i then didnt really know how to setup... Most people mentioned using a TLS to 3.5mm and doing it that way but i was thinking that would make me loose some sound quality? Then i saw people using M-Audio fast track pros which are really easy to setup but cost to much for me to afford.

I also want to be able to connect my ps3 to it also, my ps3 can use RCA as it's output for sound and i was wondering would this usb audio interface would work http://www.amazon.co.uk/Lexicon-Alph...I1W5U5BG8D702R
Would i be able to use the interface like this? PS3 RCA cable - Female RCA to Male TLS - TLS input on USB interface. Would this work?

As you can see i have absolutely no idea about all this audio lingo and it's very confusing for a newcomer...

Any help is greatly appreciated. And again, i do not have a lot of money.

I have been having this issue for a few weeks and it seemed to randomly appear. As of now, if I want to playback a session I have on one of my internal drives it will play back normally, however if I make a new session on an internal drive it will playback only white noise. This happens if I try to record or just import audio with one exception. I will get normal playback and behavior if I create this session on my system drive. While this is a decent work around for now I can not keep making sessions on my system drive.

This is especially confusing because this is a new issue. I have never seen this happen over about a year of making, editing and using sessions on all my drives. The issue has presented itself on all of my external and internal drives with sizes from 500gb to 4TB. The only drive it works on is my 1TB system drive. All my drives of Mac OS Extended Journaled Drives and I do not use a RAID system.

I am running PT 9.06 on Mac OS 10.6.8

Thanks

Hey guys, I know there are a lot of threads on external HD's but I haven't quite found what I'm looking for. I'd like to get the best external HD's I can get for my new Mac Mini that's coming in later this week. I know that 7200 rpm's is a must. I'm looking to spend $300 - $500 for 2 drives.

My questions are..

1) What is a reasonable seek time for recording audio? I run sessions with around 100 tracks and use many VST's and samples.

2) Does it matter if it's powered by my USB3 port or should I be looking for something that has a power supply? It would be nice to not worry about extra cables but I won't sacrifice performance if that's a factor.

3) Any particular brands I should be looking at? I want USB 3. So far I'm leaning towards Lacie as it's a good mix of being inexpensive & reliable.

Thanks for your help!

It seems like I write something at Gearslutz only when I need help..

We have a live recording computer set up at the FOH console of our church. We record the Sunday worship sessions (31 tracks total, 24bit/48kHz, 30 min to 1 hr long) with Nuendo 2, and I copy the entire session to my USB stick. Then I bring it home and copy to my Macbook Pro, open a new Pro Tools 10 session and drag the wav files to PT to mix. Most of the time there is no problem.

What's happening recently, though, is that the audio tracks do not sync up. some tracks are 1/2 second delayed than others. At first I thought there might have been an error while tracking, but when I open the session in Cubase 5 to check, everything is perfectly in sync.

Why is this happening? Are there something not compatible between how Nuendo records wav and Pro Tools handles that? Any idea about the cause of this problem and/or the way to fix it?

Hey guys!

I started recording with a M-Audio Fasttrack USB and quickly upgraded to an Mbox 3 (4 inputs model). I was disapointed when I noticed that even though there's 4 inputs you can only use 2 at a time. And that it has only 1 headphone output.

Basically I'm looking for an interface that has at LEAST 4 inputs that can be used at the same time. 2 headphone outputs and of course 1/4" output for monitors. Could be USB or FireWire. Has to be compatible with Reaper. And I want the best quality possible in a 500$ range.

Anything comes to your mind?

I'm looking to transfer some of my Waves stuff. I'm unclear on the proper way to do it, and I figure someone on here surely has had first hand experience.

Firstly, do you need to have WUP active in order to transfer? Secondly, my understanding is the transfer fee is waived for lower end packages. (namely in my case, it's Kramer TTT that retails for 399). Is this the case?

I did a search and found another thread, and I think all my assumptions are correct, just double checking. Thanks.

Hi all,

I have a very simple setup and wanting to find out the best interface to buy for my home studio. I work primarily in Reason 7 and do not use any external devices and recording is low on my priority list. Pretty much everything is done inside Reason with a Novation 49SL controller for input.

At the moment, I'm running an Apogee Duet which then either goes to:
1. Event TR8 monitors; or
2. (via headphone port) Schiit Asgard headphone amp > HD600

I also have an extra set of monitors that are being used for my turntables/mixer which I would like to incorporate so that I have an option to A/B for Reason using the second set of monitors.

Budget is approximately AU$1K (~USD$1k). I'm looking at getting rid of the Apogee Duet and Schiit Asgard amp and replacing them both with the Dangerous Music Source. This will allow me to plug up both sets of monitors, amp the cans, connect Reason via USB, as well as connect up the turntables/mixer. Then I can use Source to swap monitors and inputs sources (computer or mixer).

Is this the right choice? Will it have good latency for Reason? All the reviews tell me how good it is for monitor control but how well will it play with DAWs/Reason?

Thanks in advance,
Linh

Hi all,

I just bought myself a M-Audio Oxygen 49 (3rd gen) and I can't get it to work with cubase the way I want.

What I want is; when I hit the keys I want cubase to play the notes. I should also be able to record these notes into cubase. I also would like to be able to link my controls (C1 - C26) to VST plug-in parameters. There are also some transport (loop, rewind, forward, stop, play and record) buttons, but for these to work isn't mandatory.

Now I've tried lots of things, visited many forums and watched several video's on YouTube but I can't figure it out for it all to work together. What I've tried:
First, I installed DirectLink for Cubase from the M-Audio website.

Changed nothing
- Playing keys on the keyboard: works
- Controlling the first slider (C1): When Sylenth is open, it controls the cutoff. When Massive is open it controls nothing. I also can't use right mouse > midi learn
- Transport controls: nothing happens

Add "M-Audio Oxygen" as a remote device (predefined in the list, I guess because DirectLink is installed)
- Playing keys on the keyboard: nothing
- Controlling the first slider (C1): nothing happens in either Sylenth or Massive
- Transport controls: works

Add "Generic remote" as a remote device and bound some controllers
- Playing keys on the keyboard: works
- Controlling the first slider (C1): nothing happens in either Sylenth or Massive
- Transport controls: nothing happens

- Linked some quick controls (probably the same as doing nothing)
- Playing keys on the keyboard: works
- Controlling the first slider (C1): When Sylenth is open, it controls the cutoff. When Massive is open it controls nothing. I also can't use right mouse > midi learn
- Transport controls: nothing happens

During the time playing with settings etc I've managed to get the "midi learn" to work on its own (the rest didn't) and also managed to add a quick control (C1 again) which worked but controlled two parameters (Sylenth 1 cutoff (default?) and Mod Env A Decay (set up in quick controls). I can't seem to reproduce both.

Is there anyone here who can help me with this? Is it possible at all?

ok.

So if i plug a mic into the left line in of the interface, i configure my hardware inputs/outputs in totalmix to mono. In pro tools i record arm a mono track. But all im getting is audio on the left channel. If i pan right, it vanishes.

Im just trying to figure out the de-facto/proper way to record using a single mic. I obviously want the capability of panning my vocals from a single mic.

Ill answer questions about my interface setup as best as i can, but im stumped.Im using the setup basically out of the box.

I have vocals I've done extensive automation on, and I want to bounce them so I can import the leveled track into another session.

Problem is, every time I do BIP, it just copies the automation info to the new destination track rather than processing as if I had the "include automation and panning" box checked (which I don't).

It does the exact same thing whether or not the box is checked.

Anything else I should be paying attention to, or is this just a bug? It's happened occasionally in the past, but it's got my workflow stopped at the moment.

I apologize in advance to all MIDI enthusiasts, as I'm sure my amateur techniques and (lack of) knowledge is enough to make you crawl out of your skin.
That said...
This is what I've been doing: Connecting my Casio Privia piano to my laptop via usb. I run VST Host to play various VST's with my Casio, basically making it just an extended "voice bank" beyond the few voices on my Casio. I then the audio from my laptop out to record. I don't use sequencers of any kind, and that is as much as I use MIDI.
This is what I would like to do: My wife bought me an Asus Transformer Eee-pad with the keyboard connection (which includes a USB in). I would like to have the above configuration, replacing the laptop with my tablet. Is there an app/program for my tablet that would work basically like VST Host? I have seen TouchDAW, but it doesn't seem to be what I'm looking for.
Thank you in advance for your help and advice!

I'm new to the forum, so be kind! I've done searches but for the life of me I can't find anything (maybe I'm just not searching with the right terms!)
I'm starting to use a lot more digital mixers now a days, mainly in live but also in the studio world.
I've been thinking of creating a backend website that I (and others if there are multiple engineers on gigs) can use to type notes on the acts, have the set list etc, and it got me thinking, is there a way to control the mixer (through MIDI) via HTML5/PHP/Javascript etc.
I hope this makes sense, if not I'll try and reword it!

I'm using an RME UFX clocked to a crane song HEDD 192. My monitors are connected to the crane song. I'm guessing that something weird is going on with the clock, but I am kinda baffled why ableton is normal but everything else is screwy. If I close ableton the issue remains.

Hi.

I'm trying to make a snare sound in Logic's Ultrabeat with two osc and noise. I want that noise's decay to be shorter or longer depending on the amount of velocity applied. I routed one of the envelopes to be the mod source of the noise volume, so manually varying the decay of that envelope affects the sound the way I want it to.

Now I'd like to control that parameter (the envelope's decay) via velocity instead of manually, but I don't know how. Setting vel as the via source in the noise volume control does not work, as it makes velocity to control the ammount of modulation the ENTIRE envelope (and not only the decay) applies.

Is this even possible? If not, is there a software drum machine that allows me to do it?

Hey guys, I'm looking for some help when using Flex Time to edit multitrack drums.

Basically, I am only using Flex Time to make edits by hand where absolutely necessary rather than using to quantize the drums.

What I am wondering is how everyone goes about making sure that flex time does not cause artifacts, particularly in the cymbals. On some of the tunes I'm doing it is causing a jittery sound on the cymbals. At the moment I am setting up flex time in the following manner:

- group all drums together, selecting editing, and phase locked audio
- set snare and bass drum to the Q
- turn on flex time, automatically analyzes all tracks.
- go thru bass drum and snare tracks to make sure transient markers are only there for the actual transients.
- grab any hits I feel are off time/feel weird.

This has worked well for some songs, but on others seems to cause artifacts. I've researched a whole bunch on the topic but am still a bit lost on how to get flex to sound more transparent.

Given my scenario, is there anything I should be doing differently to remedy the issue? I love what flex time does, but at times the artifacts are unacceptable. Thanks in advance.

Hope you can help, I'm just having a mad day trying to figure the best way to do this:

Got a Burl B2 Bomber AD which I want to hook up to my RME Fireface 800.

So I've taken an SPDIF lead out from the Burl and connected it to the SPDIF input on the FF800.

Everything works fine, but I'm not sure what (if anything) to do about the clock settings?

I have the Burl set to internal clock and the Fireface clock source to SPDIF. There's a screen shot attached.

Is that the best method? Shouldn't I be using the WORD clock somehow?

Help please - am I getting the best out of my set-up?

By the way, for the output I use a Lavry DA10 linked to the Fireface by an Optical cable to the ADAT 2 output.

Many thanks

I'm new to the DAW world. I'm running Reaper on a Gateway DX4200-09 with an AMD Phenom 1.8 Ghz processor. I'm planning to have a faster cpu installed (probably the Athlon 3.2 Ghz Tri-core-it is compatible with the existing socket and 95 watt power supply, the current Phenom 2 isn't). I have already upgraded my RAM from 4 gigs to 8 and I installed a SIIG PCIe firewire card (w/ TI chipset). Unfortunately, I bought this computer right before Windows 7 came out. I've never liked Vista too much (even the 64 bit version). XP was actually better in my mind, but Windows 7 seems very reliable (we have it on my wife's laptop). So, will Windows 7 Home Premium be sufficient or should I go for one of the more expensive versions (Pro, Ultimate, ?) I sure would appreciate everyone's advice, as long as it isn't to junk the computer and start over. Thanks.
Even tho i know there arn't any nektar made templates for it has any one tried it with reaper? how well does it interact with all aspects of reaper?

do people think it would work? and does any one know of any reaper templates for it?

I'm upgrading my system, and contemplating the best route to setting it all up.

I don't completely understand the technology of word clocking, so this is where the questions come in.

Currently, I run the Lynx thru its ADAT card into my Pro Tools rig. The Lynx is set to its internal clock, not sure if the PT is somehow piggybacking on the Lynx clock. Hence...not sure how that works.

I'm expecting to replace my current interface, likely to a Focusrite Saffire Pro 40, which also has ADAT in/outs, and run it hand-in-hand w. the Lynx.

It has been suggested to consider a Lynx USB card to replace the ADAT route. I can't really afford to do that, unless... of course, folks on here convince me it's really the way to go.

Initially, I was expecting to run the Lynx to the Focusrite, and then on to the Focusrite, and then by Firewire to my computer. Is there a known detriment to daisy-chaining one digital signal/clock through another? In other words, will I be much better off offering my Lynx its own dedicated digital path, rather than sending it through the Focusrite?

I know the Focusrite is limited to 48Khz. I'm presuming that one can only use a sample rate that equals or is lower than the lowest sample rate unit in the chain?

Thanks for any input you'd be willing to give!

Here is an odd question that I do not see any discussion on...

Today I did a little experiment....I have a Focusrite VRM box laying around...and I decide to connect a preamp with digital outs to the SPDIF input on the box.

Then, I go into my DAW, select the VRM box as the interface, set up a record track, and guess what? It automatically locked and passed audio INTO the computer from the SPDIF input!

So...it got me to thinking...if this little Focusrite box does it maybe other headphone DACs do as well. SO>...has anyone tried to do this with any of the USB headphone DAC's out there that have SPDIF inputs on the back? Using the SPDIF input routed as the input for recording?

There is one called the FUBAR IV that looks interesting. I don't really record more than two channels at a time....and if I could get a really high quality headphone DAC like this as my input source it would be kind of cool. I can't find any literature that talks about this so I thought I would ask.

Thoughts?

Workflow

I feel as if I make way to many threads asking stupid things and cluttering up the forums. I’d like to try something new and perhaps any future thread makers can take my ideas and repeat them, or...

I feel as if I make way to many threads asking stupid things and cluttering up the forums. I’d like to try something new and perhaps any future thread makers can take my ideas and repeat them, or not.
So I’d like to just say that I’m going to list out all my problems and gear so I can get issues worked out in one thread rather than a million random ones spread out.

My first issue is with my workflow. I always seem to start up machine 64 bit on my pc and get to it that way. I’ll open a vst usually and just start hitting random keys, and if I like the sound of something I’ll try and remember the keys or finger placement and reach over to wherever my machine may be and hit all the buttons in order to just record. (Usually forget the keys and never remember what I play) Then if I get something recorded I’ll usually hit another bank pad like (B) and do drums.

Now as far as layering sounds and spreading things out as far as drop outs and crazy things that make up a whole song, I’m not exactly sure how to do that. I usually only stay with one tone throughout the whole song because that’s all I really know how to do. (I know it sounds boring and yes it’s taking its toll on me) Then I’ll somehow throw some random effects on if I please to and not knowing my effects and what they do I try and just turn some knobs and call it good.

BAM!!! Music made people!!! Wrong!!! This workflow sucks and I need some new ideas fast!!! I’ll never make music this way.
Then I also have many DAWS that I can use but I know and have been told to just pick one. I‘d probably just pick Studio one 2 pro to start with because it looks the best to me.

So first thing is first with DAWS in general, they seem to be great but very complexed. I mean I’m trying to figure out when and where you use a mono or a stereo track. What’s the difference and why should you choose one over the other.

I know how to drag and drop machine onto a track I’ve created in order to use it but I start freaking out trying to arm the DAW and work by my piano which is away from the screen. So what I mean is I want to be able to hit record on my AKAI MPK 88 sitting on my bed and know that 2 counts are going to go by and then I start playing. (Instead of using my mouse and finger clicking everything I do) Personally I don’t know much about presets on DAWS, PIANOS, and etc, but would like to very much.

Talking presets takes me into my next problem. How do I save a solid preset or presets for future use on VOCALS? I must say this is the downfall to my production right here. No joke, I should record myself sometime doing vocals and all the crap I go through. I set my Universal Audio 6176 next to my vocal booth so I’m walking around less but it doesn’t help if the volumes sound like crap. (Reminder, I’m a total NOOB on most of this stuff) So I’ve armed a track inside of my DAW and the instrumental I’ve created is playing. I throw on my headphones and walk into the booth. I make one large track and just copy and paste it so it’s super long and that way I don’t have to leave the booth until I’m done cause it’s one part all the way through.

(Good or bad?) Then sometimes I’ll be on the microphone and the volume is low and I can’t hear myself and or the 6176 is making me sound like crap, so I leave the booth and start turning knobs left and right not knowing what’s good or bad, then re enter and check the microphone again. I have a Neumann tlm 49 and really would like to know what this thing really sounds like, instead of crappy sounding audio.

So there is a bit of information for you to read and take in. I have more but I feel it would be just repetitive at this moment in time to write. Let me know what you think and if you can help me out.

Thanks!

Which interface would compare to my Duet 2 ? (as cheap as possible).

Hello to you all,
I'm new to gearslutz, this is my first post so I apologize if I have posted this in the wrong place. I have searched a lot of older posts and cannot seem to find the info I require so I decided to post my own thread and hopefully get the answers i need with the help of all your collective wisdom.
I will be posting more as I come to add gear for what will be at the very least a semi pro set up.
I am needing to replace my audio midi interface. I need at least 8 inputs (although 10 or 12 would be a nice option just in case) but only two outputs are really necessary as I do all my production and mixing in the box and I'd like something that ticks a few boxes if possible? I would prioritize something that has good/great conversion, and nice preamps would be a benefit but I plan to get some nice tube pre gear soonish so the conversion and low latency are more important. at the moment I just have the roland ua 25 ex which i use with a mac book pro but as soon as the new mac pro is released I'll be getting that for my studio and I'll be using logic pro 9 still. so with that in mind what would be the suggestions? I'd like something that will cost no more than $1000 if possible, as I need to buy quite a lot of gear to bring my studio up to a pro/semi pro level and funds are not endless.....far from it :)
please let me know if more info is needed from me and my apologies for rambling a tad and if I have posted this in the wrong place?
cheers

Well, I'm Mountain Lion on a 2012 iMac, and have a Babyface connected via USB. I connect the audio out port on the iMac to the optical-in port on the Babyface (via S/PDIF cable). I have two powered speakers connected to the Babyface analog outputs.

Next, I go into 'System Preferences', and select 'Digital Out' for my sound output. Then, I go into 'Audio/MIDI Setup' utility. There, I select 'Built-in Output' as my device -- "Format: 96000.0 Hz 2ch-24bit integer".

Whenever I play something back, I hear nothing. If I open the TotalMix app, I can see the input signal to the Babyface under: Hardware Input...AS 1/2. So I know the signal is getting to the Babyface.

What do I need to do to get output to the speakers? Basically, my plan was to output digital audio from the iMac, and then let the Babyface do the D/A conversion & output to my speakers. Can you not use the Babyface like this?

Thanks in advance for any help...

i just got my brand new RME Fireface UC, Behringer ECM8000, and Adam A77X. After spending the whole afternoon tracking this down, i give up...gruudge

There is no input signal in REW or my DAW to record the microphone. In TotalMix I can see that the mircrophone is picking up a signal (e.g. clapping in front of it), which is also transmitted to the speakers, BUT the programs REW and my DAW don't recognize the signal.

(yes, phantom power is on, and input gain is at such a level that there is already static/hiss and it nearly starts to create a loopback signal).

In the Win7 Playback devices, I selected "Speaker RME Fireface UC" for the output with no problem. But for the recording devices, I select "Analog (1+2)" - also there, the small green level meter does NOT pick up a signal from ANY of the devices listed there (one of which should be the microphone).
