Moog Little Phatty

I own quite few synth now but no analog yet.
The voyager is a bit too expensive but the Little Phatty looks interesting.

Does anyone own one? Can you recommend it?

well looks like ots more performance oriented. just a few knobs for real time control of basic sounds. the voayer has a lot more knobs to tweek good for sound design and wierder sounds.
but i havent heard teh phatty yet so who knows, maybe the small amount of sounds/knobs/routings are THE best sounds , thus, dont need any more.

The only thing I don't like about about the lil phatty is the knob layout.

Resonance and Fliter on the same knob?!

What the f--!???!!!!

I think it's a good synth for people who don't play synth... if that makes any sense.

I messed around with one for a few minutes at the Moog factory in Ashville, NC. First of all, they look 10x cooler in person than in the photos. Also they layout isn't bad at all. If you have used a Moog Source then this is a major improvement on that idea. It sounds great, and is really functional. I wouldn't mind getting one (or a voyager rack) to take live. I'm not taking my Voyager Signature out to random clubs and all, but the phatty would be nice. For the pricepoint it's pretty sick, and the non-tribute ones will be even cheaper. Well worth it IMHO.

At the same time, for "real synthesists" that likely already have some CV control gear, there's simply not enough CV io on the unit, and you'd probably if anything just want a 2ndhand voyager.

I'm not crying that I don't have a phatty, but I highly recommend them to people that would simply want one really nice analogue synth in the studio and not break the bank. It sounds LOADS better than software emulations, and it's really great. If anything and you really need another oscilator, just hook up the ring modulator pedal or the lowpass pedal and you can probably figure something out.

I grabbed one. I like it. Sounds great. Your choices are Phatt Ass or SE1X. I would suggest try getting both, I know I want an SE1X :) My Phatt Ass is my controller for my Omega 8 as well. Makes me happy

I tried a pre production unit and thought it was a very cute synth. Sounded very nice and did what it should. A second hand voyager might be better if you can get a deal, but I think the little phatty is a great synth (apart from the stupid name)

You are right, that is boring. Sounds nice though. I hate the fact that he says "the money setting" is when the filter is overloaded. I think it is a sweet sounding synth and I just dread the idea that it will just be used for all those PHATT sounds as opposed to the variety it is capable of. I think those PHATT sounds are impressive but are tiring and boring... and in tracks, you need all the other more subtle stuff more often. Moogs can do that too!

Anyway, I think it's a very nice synth for the money.

I still cant choose between the voyager blue and the phatty, but since the phatty is such a must have beauty ill better get both :-) im planning a nice multifunctional setup for live usage and at home aswell containing the Toft ATB 16, daw + screens, 2 auratones, patchbay, some outboard in softbags and the moogs... atleast that the plan for 2007, im kinda sick of doing foh for coverbands right now so im looking for some new horizon :-)

cheers

I agree that the resonance / filter cutoff toggle is a glaring limitation.

its not really a serious limitation. You can assign the mod wheel to filter and then tweak the resonance. tweaking cutoff and rez at the same time isnt a big deal to me as you have to stop playing anyway.

great synth btw. very close to minimoog sound but with a real nasty edge to it.

imo the lack of noise generator is limitation. I use it in almost every bass and lead sound.

Why ? Right hand plays the keyboard and left hand turns cutoff and resonance knobs at a time ?

moog little phatty

See if there is a filter pedal jack that can be plugged into on the back panel of the phatty.
If there is you can control the filter with the pedal.
I have a vintage minimoog and before i had it midied i used to be able to control the filter with the pedal and the mod did the vibrato and my left hand could go between the wheels and the resonance to change the sound in real time as you like.

I have a Moog Little Phatty. It's quite a nice synth.
I am using it as both a synth and a controller for my little home studio.

It compares well with the Model D and can make many of the same tones. They both overlap
but complement each other. The Model D to my ears sounds "wider" than the LP.
but that could be just my stretched tuning of the Model D. I wouldn't swap either of them
or sell the Model D now I have the Phatty. I play them both differently.

The Phatty to my ears has a tighter more precise sound - it's got a lot of definition in the low
end. It doesn't need the overload, but benefits form it, like the OSCar does, in some cases.

The guy who does all my synth repairs (he's a wizard BTW), reckons the Phatty sounds like
an OSCar, but I disagree. I have both and at least my OSCar sounds quite harsh nasty
compared to the Phatty, but they can both do real smooth too. I think the Phatty is a
close compare to the Source, but has better ergonomics and a future retro look I l really like.

The Phatty definitely
has a big sound. It's got a great keyboard action, I think it's sourced from the same
bods who do Yamahas, so it is very good. The knobs are all solid and the build looks and
feels great.

The "Stage" version is coming out, if you want it. I recommend it both to those who are looking
at their first analogue synth and those who either have analogues already and want a
Moog and those who have a Moog Model D and don't want to take it on the road. It's
a little ripper.

Here's a snap of my work desk, with the LP pretending to be a controller:

I have also ordered a Toft ATB-16 (which I am hoping will be here soon) to replace
the old mixer, so it was a good Christmas for me - what happens when you don't spend
all your money on stuff like ipods, xboxen and other stuff....
