An arbitrary 14 reverbs shootout

Inspired by Grumphh's thread, I thought I'd use his clean samples for an arbitrary reverb shootout, with no purpose other than some fun.

The attached sounds include the same 6 clean samples used by Grumphh to show his Alesis Wedge processor, so here I am using different reverb processors.

I did NOT try to go on a 5 hour surgery for each processor. I simply grabbed the samples, then dialed in some quick values (strict 2 minute tweaking each, and go) and rendered to audio (no additional processing was used at all), so yes, as such, this is not a fair shootout, BUT there will be blood (), which is the main purpose of a shootout.

So take a listen, and choose your best (or least worse, whatever) 3 [only] reverbs from the list (1-14).

When we have enough votes, I will unveil the reverb processors I used (there were 13 different processors, hardware and software, mostly hardware).

I just thought it would be interesting how taste and perception could orientate the results.

Thanks for playing...

The poll will close in 4 days.
I will bump this 1 time every day for these 4 days as I think the more votes we get, the more interesting the results might be.

Edit: the mp3 format is 320 Kbps, so that's not too bad.

I'll bump it along with you. Reverbs are to important not to be bumped

However, i can't listen properly to the clips atm so will vote later (which will also give me a reason to bump)

Listening with a party upstair and speakers the other way from where Im sitting but scored them quickly while listening anyway.
It does look awfully like a curve of my attention span though, and Im mostly listening for how the tails break up more than the space as thats my favourite bit.

The 13 got scored so on a quick 1-10

Right, the purpose is to take your picks based on your pure audition taste without the influence of brands or models.
I set the poll to close automatically in a couple of days as of now. When it's closed I will unveil the brands and models used.

In the meantime, I would say I find it nearly worrysome that we have only 16 voters so far out of dozens of auditions.

I think that speaks loads itself.

Hats off to all the ballsy slutz who already voted so far. But don't worry, we can be pretty sure the "experts" will come up with their smart remarks precisely and only UNTIL the poll is over.

Here are impressions written down as i listened.
As you can see only a few were ok to me. If i didn't write anything i wasn't impressed :D

1 bright, deep, long, white noise, high freq, ok
2 darker, flat, shorter, less white noise, still bright
3 grainy, deep, medium long, white noise, bright
4 smooth long, bright decay, flat, not ok
5 grain, bassy, shortish, flat, not ok
6 white noise, ringing, longish
7 smooth, shortish, middy, boring decay
8 grainy, deep, shortish, nice tail, high freq content, ok
9 no high freq? long, boring tail
10 small predelay, shortish, dark, small
11 predelay, slight grain, long, medium depth, bright, ok
12 very bright, long, middy tail, white noise
13 very bright , grainy, shortish, flat, not-nice decay
14 smooth dark cavern, long, darkish decay,

So 1, 8 and 11 it is for the best ones to me.

But what do I know? All different, btw, but those are the ones that made me take notice for a variety of reasons.

Curious to hear the results in a couple days.

I voted yesterday and I actually forgot which ones I voted for but I'm pretty sure it was 4, 6, and 11. I don't consider myself a reverb connoisseur/snob, so I don't think that any one reverb was unusable, but it would have to depend on the material and the context. Also, I didn't base my decision on each reverb as a whole, rather, I based it on how it worked with a given sample. In other words, when one reverb sounded outstanding to me with one or two of the samples, I chose that as a favorite even though it may not have sounded that great with the other samples. Also, some sounded good to me because they sounded realistic, others sounded good because they didn't.

Some sounded grainy, which I didn't like.

Some had longer tails which tended to drown out some.

A few, which I forget now (Is there a way to post who voted for what?), had a delicate balance which I liked.

But isn't reverb the kinda thing that you'd have to spend a great deal of time making sure all the settings were very close to each other before you could judge them honestly?

Yeah, it didn't strike me as a particularly scientific test, so I just voted on the three that I liked for whatever reason. As somebody else stated, some I liked because they sounded real and some I liked because they didn't sound real. All I could vote on was what was there.

Thanks all for chiming in slutz.

Just a note that there is absolutely NOTHING to worry about this poll/exercise.
- There are no right/wrong answers (as clarified in the OP, this is just for fun and there's nothing scientific about this):
a bunch of reverbs, hw and sw, processing the same 6 samples, mostly random parameter values... which 3 do you like the most? Ie., a very straightforward exercise.

- This exercise and the soon-to-come brand/model-unveiling should serve you guys all individually so you draw your own conclusions or questions... that's all.

cheers

3, 4 and 8.

There are major differences, as it was pointed and analyzed. Very interesting! It makes me realize I really like the warmer ones and don't care for the "metallic" ones with imprecise decay.

I only voted for 10 and 11, couldn't decide on a third. Some of them seemed to ring quite a lot on the static note one at 15 seconds in (6,7,8 and 9?). Number 1 was a bit 'phasey'.

Alesis Quadraverb (#4) was one of my three favorites. I guess that's not surprising since I used one in my live rig for many years back in the 90s.
