I generally use a Tube-Tech CL-2A optical compressor before the Phoenix. Not a huge fan of VCA compressors for some reason.

It's more of a soft limiter than a compressor anyway..with big balls.
As I said , Phoenix is fantastic for classical music or pop . I just listened the demos again and I'm very impressed .

No no, not so much in to what they call trance, i do like the progressive variant though, and some melodic house stuff too. But I like to play and make everything from breaks and indie alternative to cheesy slutty piano club tunes.

Actually I think the Phoenix can work great on a lot of different styles of music; rock, dance, classical etc. It's just very different in use then a VCA comp for example. There are plenty people who use both at the same time, each for it's own effect. Both indie rock producers and slick dance dudes.
