I like to use 2 distortions in series, usually the zvex machine followed by something else (depending on what flavor I'm after). Your mileage may vary and you might not be a fan of power noise, but it sure will maker your kick drums thick and chunky. =)

Hey, I'm looking for a good sub-$100 distortion for my analog synth (DSI Mopho). Would someone with a distortion pedal be so kind to post a demo? First the sound without distortion, then with. I would love to hear a few pedals on something other than a guitar.

Many thanks in advance!

As mentioned above... the Rat pedal works great. I've tried many pedals that roll off too much of the top end when you overdrive them. The Filter on the Rat lets you roll it off manually, or leave lots of top end in. Other's I've tried that I like are the Line6 UberMetal and Bixonic Expandora.

TL;DR so sorry if this has already been mentioned.

I kinda like those $25 Behringer pedals. They're pretty hit or miss overall, but there's a few that I've been digging for synths like the Bass Overdrive and the Fuzz pedal. I'm pretty sure the Bass Overdrive is a ripoff of Boss's pedal, but I still like it.

Try a fuzz instead of distortion.
Try a ring modulator or wave shaper.
Try recording through a synth/guitar amp with a mic.
Try an copy of your sound, where you cut the bass and
distort only mids and highs, then mix with the original sound, lowpassed.
Or try a multiband distortion.

Try anything you can think of...

I'd just go out and buy some random cheap OD/distro pedals. On stereo sources it's fun to use two different OD/distro pedals - one pedal for left channel, then a different pedal for the right channel.

I have OD/distro pedals by Boss, MJM, Alesis, Marshall, Effector 13, Vox, and Prescription Electronics.

All good fun.

For inexpensive and off the beaten path, I recommend the Mellowtone Wolf Computer. It has a nice range of lighter distortion through thick fuzz, and it can also do crazy oscillating, arpeggiating madness.

All the demos online are with guitars, but it works great with synths, too.
