electro harmonix 2880?

Have anyone tried this one around here? I´m tempted to use it as kind of a schetch pad. I have a friend who has the repeater this should be similar but sound better from what I have heard. It´s also way cheaper BTW.

Studio or live? If its the studio, i'd use Ableton live for realtime looping. Way more flexible than a pedal.

looks interesting..
I like hardware units, ableton is great, of course, but...
I like hardware units. (did I just say that?)
Beautiful as a scratchpad in a hardware setup. it seems.
the converters maybe soso. there is USB.

thanks for the link, maybe I'll just go for it, for the live gear setup.
a couple of questions pop into my head:

-will my computer recognise it's flashram cards as yet another volume?
-through the USB?
-how fast/tight is the sequencer?
-midi clock? will it loop ok? (I know it's a looper, but it is a GUITARPLAYER looper. the "reviews" in the link are completely useless.)
-will it do fine as a waveform looper? e.g. for use as an oscilator?

Yeah it looks nice, I guess it´s not exactly cheap but relativly so compared to the repeater. The cool thing about the repeater though is that it has FX send/return.

My thought for this is to run it in tandem with a sp1200, drop stuff from vinyl or what ever straight to the 2880 and perhaps come up with some crazy shit and later retrieve it to the computer.

I have thought about Live but while it´s sertainly possible to do the same it´s also possible to use the computer as a phone/TV etc. but sometimes it makes sence to just have a real phone or TV. I dont know maybe it´s that the right (or is it left I never remember) side of the brain get to work to much with the computer and sometimes I feel it can have a negative effect on creativity.

even if you have a nice computer looper, it is nice to have a hardware one too. Personally, after looking at the live documentation and talking to people who use it, I think it is missing some important features that are common on hardware loopers, especially for someone who wants to emulate classic tape looping and thinks that midi synch on a looper is worthless. (like me)
If you look at the price of the 2880, make sure to look at the price of the foot pedal too, as it really needs that to be useful. the foot pedal takes it over the price of the repeater, if I recall correctly. The new roland looper looked great until I read the manual. then I discovered that they forgot to implement a simple feature that was common in the last generation of loopers (line6 and boomerang), namely, the ability to play or record stuff at slower or faster speeds, and then change the speed, changing the pitch as well. in other words, emulating changing the speed on a tape loop.
they must have been too busy putting in worthless midi sync features. That oversight makes it useless to me, but if you don't mind it, the boss rc-50 looks like a great bet.
personally, i am looking at maybe getting the 2880, but I am ggoing to wait until the new boomerang looper comes out (rumor has it sometime this fall) before I decide.

Bear in mind that there's yet another 'Rang at the drawing board.
Release date unknown.....
If I understood Mike Nelson correctly, it will practically kill all competition

I believe the one on the drawing board is the one i'm waiting for, and I plan to wait for it to come out before i get another looper.

I have to clarify that Mr. Nelson is planning to release a looper this fall.
But the on I mentioned is further down the line (hush, hush)..

Anyways, here's a brief description of the looper he's going to do first (pasted from an e-mail):

Quote:
Hi ,
We will be releasing an effects pedal at the summer NAMM show and
following that with a new looper in Oct 06. The looper will have true
stereo recording, vastly improved audio specs, long record time, 6
loops, multi level undo/redo, multiple loops can play synched or
unsynched, and a slew of "utility" features such as an octave down
effect for creating bass parts, auto fade out, metronome, etc. It will
be roughly half the size of the Rang(TM) Plus!

I would be nice if these units have Flashram cards or something like that?
I do like to switch sets when playing live.

yah, i've seen it. It looks nice, but there are a coule of things. For my hardware looper, I would kind of rather just have a stomp box than a rack unit that would need a rack and a separate pedal. Also, the other loopers that have come up on this thread have all been 1/4 to 1/2 the price of that thing. I really like building loopers in software environments for ultimate versatility. I want a hardware one for simplicity and convenience. I'm not really into paying more than about $600 or so for it for that reason. It would be for messing around an d for gigs where I didn't want to bring my laptop. For less than the price of the looperlative, you could get a maxed out mac mini and a little audio interface and rack them up, and get a midi pedal and set the computer to boot straight to your softwar llooper of choice, and have a lot more versatility.

I've considered buying one of these pretty soon. I'd have to put it on layaway, but it looks like alot of fun.
