Integrating an mpc and s950 into my current ableton setup.. help needed

Hi there,

Im a house music producer and i would like some advice on integrating an mpc and an s950 into my DAW (ableton live 8)

My current setup is on a macbook pro running live 8 with an rme fireface400 being my interface. I also have a maschine with i use for drums and samples etc.

Basically i want to get the dirty texture and colour and swing etc that i know comes out of the mpc and s950 but im not sure how to go about making everything work together if i just bought them both..

I want to sequence and add fx in ableton but have the sounds coming from the s950 or mpc? is this possible?

If anyone has any advice on this it would be much appreciated

Not qualified to give advice on the MPC..
But as far as the 950 is concerned, I advise that you give yourself the option of sequencing it from DAW by getting a USB to midi unit (edirol are good) and get a nice simple good quality A to D like a fireface babyface Or an apogee duet to track your 950 sequence.

thanks for your advice, would the babyface or duet run alongside the fireface and what exactly is it doing?

forgive my rubbish knowledge of this if i ask questions that sound stupid im just trying to learn it.

Cheers

i would look in to geting an innerclock systems thingie. that should give you perfect sync capabilities between your daw and your mpc and the 950.

beyond that it's upto you as to how you integrate them together; depends on personal preference. the 'swing' however comes from sequencing from the mpc.

You can either sequence them from the mpc, live or both:

If you just want to add some stuff to your mpc/950 music use midi clock.

You can use both live's sequencer and mpc's sequencer at the same time using midi clock.

Sequencing from live: midi out of rme into midi in of the mpc.

You can sequence the 950 from either live or the mpc. Mpc/live midi out to 950 midi in.

You can always sequence everything with its own midi channel from either ableton or your mpc.

When sequencing with midi clock I never use live as a slaved device.

You can use live as a sound module. Midi out of the mpc in to midi in of your rme. Route your midi channels into the tracks.

You route your audio signals into the rme and monitor from there. In live you would setup audio tracks for each input you use from your mpc/950. Add efx...

Babyface or fireface is made by rme
Duet is made by apogee.

They are analogue to digital interfaces.. And what they do is enable your computer to record audio at very high quality. Which is what you need if you want to accurately capture the nuances of the hardware's audio output

Yes!
I wouldn't get an mpc if you don't plan on using it as a sequencer. Just connect the the s950 via midi & audio to your RME, and record the results.

Get a cf card or sd card for your mpc/950. If your 950 has scsi, use that. You can get a lotharek drive for sd cards to fit in your 950 if you dont have a scsi port.

Which mpc do you have?

I would just sample the sounds from your computer, using the soundcard's outputs, not transfer files via disks and such. This is particularly true for the 950, it's A/D-converters (particularly when overdriving the gain) are half the charm.

Just sample the output of your Mac. (or any other device)
> One (or two) of the RME line outputs to the line input(s) of the Akai S950.
