What exactly is that big black thing on the far right side of his studio? Is that some sort of musical instrument? I don't see any plugs or wires. How does it work???

That's called a mellotron. It plays small tape recordings of notes struck on instruments from the caveman days when the keys are pressed. It doesn't need electricity because it's powered by drugs from the 70s.
As an owner of two Jupiter-80s, I am not quite sure how to understand this comment...
On Howard Jones' Facebook site, we find: Do follow us at https://twitter.com/howardjonesHQ too for all the latest and some well deserved nostalgia since the number 30 is v significant this year- (wonder why!!)
...and on his website: Next year will be the 30th anniversary of the first single release...
...and on Twitter: Complete reform of my studio this week ready for new work!
So it seems that Howard Jones just rearranged his studio setup with classic analogs for his new 30th anniversary project, as he is 30 years in the music business! But this doesn't mean at all, that he suddenly dismisses soft and digital hardware synths...
Quite honestly the only way to know is to ask Howard what hey thinks of the Jupiter 80 at this point. Considering he posted this pic I would think it would be to show his next release will have that classic sound.
The Jupiter 8 vs 80 war is so split, both sides love what they have and see no reason to buy the other instrument. So at this point it's all good.

Don't quite know what you meant, but I took your comment as meaning the JP-80 is ONLY good for wedding bands and not as a pro synth. Apparently that's not what you meant?!? (unless you use both your 80's only at weddings

Ah, not really..., because I've completely forgotten to mention that it was also designed for cover bands. Sorry, my bad!
For some reason the lulz never get old when I see unplugged gear. Unplugged gear though will always sound best on-stage.
It's true! It's equivalent to real-estate home staging. When we were looking for a home I made it a point to say, "Just imagine how it'll look when we have our crap everywhere."
The whole time reading the article I thought it was about Howard Johnson. Only when I scrolled down this page and saw youtube vids with some white dude did i realize its someone else named Howard Jones.
I have no idea who this Howard is lol Oh well cool setup anyways
