Looking for help with old school tom replacement

On a recording the drummer didn't always hit the toms hard enough. I am looking to sample the best hits and replace the rest of the album with those. I am on 2" tape. I am able to turn the tom hits into midi notes using a DM5 in realtime. I got a MPC2000XL hoping to sample the toms and trigger them with the DM5. But now I am not seeing where in the manual it explains how to trigger the pads with midi notes. Can this be done or did I get the wrong sampler? I am a newbie at this and figured it would be as easy as assigning Midi note names on the DM5....guess not.
