Thread Starter | Live bass Juno-106 ? what about Mopho X4 ?
I've searched the forums alot, but couldn't find a lot of info for live-specific duties with the Juno-106. I would like to know if anyone has experienced it for live bass synth duties and if it turned out to be fat enough for their needs ? It's only 1 DCO, but it has that fattening chorus and that HPF that actually boosts the low end in the first position. Think 80's michael jackson, madonna style bass synths.
I was also wondering the same thing about the mopho x4, it has a unison mode that could make it pretty fat i guess, but I've never played one, not sure about the filters either.
Thanks.
Francis.

I have a Mopho x4 and it's monstrous for bass. Additionally it's got very flexible modulation routing, separate glide control for each oscillator, etc.

Thanks for the quick replies !!!
So i need to figure out whether I'm into monstrous or excellent bass ?
Could you describe both basses, which one is more wall shaking ? which one has a more convincing envelope for songs like madonna's into the groove ?
THANKS !

I'll go further than solipsynth and say it's monstrous AND excellent! Mine will definitely shake the walls.

I love the bassline in Madonna's (Into The Groove), I don't believe you will get that sound from either of the two synths you mentioned though. I believe the bass was done with a DX7. Buy that for $400 or so dollars and save some money. Your back might hate you for hauling that beast around for gigs though as it weighs a gajillion pounds.

Hi, I should have been clearer, I'm not looking to have that same sound as in into the groove, i love that bassline a lot too BUT...
I just want to know if, with a similar filter envelope setting, the Juno 106 would be convincing or if it would be lacking in the bass department. (for live playing)
Know of any youtube clips of bands performing with a 106 for bass duties ?

The Juno 106 is certainly capable of some bass...and it doubles as being good at pretty much all bread and butter... Maybe not the most amazing synth in terms of flexibility, but if you are creative you'd be surprised what you can carve out of it...especially when you add effects.

Anybody ever used one specifically live and for bass ?? I would love to hear hands on experience in that situation, like if you used anything to fatten it up to compete with the next band's bass player ?

To check out a Jun0-106 live check out the band JunoWhat?! They are deliciously old school and not only use their Juno 106 live but named the band after it.
Lots of clips on their site: http://junowhat.net/
I think the Juno is tons of fun and great for bass. I may be parting with it soon and potentially make room for a DSI synth as I have two vintage Rolands, a Minibrute and a Moog on the way.

Francis, check out the band The Rapture. I've seen them live a few times and they use a 106 for bass and its the loudest, most powerful and room shaking thing I've ever heard, just about. I have both a 106 and an x4 and I was shocked at the bass sounds this band gets out of the 106. I think both synths are great for bass but something is just a little rounder, warmer and pleasant sounding about the 106 imo. Both synths have fantastic sub oscillators which go a long way (the x4 has a -1 octave square wave sub on osc 1 and a -2oct square wave sub on osc 2), and yes, as someone said, of course they can be synced for a deep, pure tone. But ultimately, call me crazy but I think I'd go with a 106 for bass at the end of the day, despite it only being one DCO. I've also gotten my 106 to do a fantastic DX7 bass sound. Maybe I'll post some samples later.

Get the 106 then save a little extra cash and buy a TX7. Then you'll be golden. Then save a little extra money to fix the voice chips when they croak |

imo if you want good bass out of an old roland, 101's the way to go.
