Which Hardware Chorus?

I'm giving serious thought to selling my Lexicon MX400 and getting an Eventide Space, which will leave me short of Chorus/Phaser.

Any suggestions for reasonably priced (ie, £100-£200) analogue chorus pedal/rack?

Thank you, sirs.

Maybe you should check out the Ensoniq DP4.
Haven't heard one in years, but never remember hearing anything that sounded better as far as hardware is concerned.

My first choice would be a Roland SDX330.
I compared the Chorus I get from it with the ones I get from my Sony DPS-V77, which is a fantastic multi-effects unit, and I think the Roland wins.

If mono is ok, probably a cheaper Boss unit would be a good choice.
I only have two RRV10s and they are pretty cool, and the other units seem pretty good too.

Behringer CC 300 is cheap, good and analog, not bad for the price of 30 Euros. Mono In, Stereo Out. Several Combinations with the 4 switches are possible. Roland Dimension C Clone, but I never heard a shoot-out.

That's pretty high praise for the DP/4!

But yes, it's a fantastic unit, and VERY good on both chorus and esp. phaser. A bit dirty, a bit lo-fi, but that should make a nice complement to the Space...

I know you have a certain price range in mind, but the Moogerfooger Cluster Flux is absolutely stunning and is the best chorus/flange you will ever hear. It's expensive, but it's the last chorus/flange you will ever need.

warm, classic sound.. CE-2.

boutique modern sound that can be more transparent and subtle, becoming one with the signal.. with tweakability and separate processing for L/R , if you choose so. well, and a hefty price tag.. Diamond Halo.

these two seriously float my boat. had a friends CE-2, and am probably picking one before the year's end. Diamond.. out of my league. in the same vein as CE-2 but more $$$.. and not in pedal: DM300, AD202, Yamaha 1010. of course they do fantastic delay and flanging as well

phasers: depends what flavor you like...

classic jet/jarre: small stone vintage units
classic 70s swirl: phase90 mxr script cs
6/12stage: mooger fooger
10stage 70s.. genesis .. mxr phase 100
tangerine dream... code krautrock phaser (shulte RI)

love phasers. if i could id have 10 of them..

Do you think the MF-103 would be a good choice for one's only analog phaser? I.e., does it work as an "all-purpose" unit? Have had my eye on one for a while...

could be. i had only that for the longest time and didnt complain. however, it works best with brighter sources and lot of harmonics.. its just a tiny bit dark-ish. not much. so it loves solina strings,, andromeda, oberheims, in general curtis chip based synths. 12stage set on slow is absolutely gorgeous, but it overtakes the sound completely. you will probably use 6-stage most of the time.

not for rhodes, clean guitars, some darker digital synths. for that i think a phase90 might be better, still searching for solution..

fwiw i paired MF with a vintage small stone. cant get any more classic/famous phasing than that.

you could also have a look at Maxon vintage series phaser (its a recent pedal).. forgot the name... it has 4/6/8 phase settings.. and sound gorgeous.

two parameters are important with phasers: number of stages, or choice of number of stages... and circuit design. as these vary in results greatly. so not all 4stage sound alike at all.. case in point: small stone and phase90,

Depends what vibe you want of course, but I love my Dynacord TAM21, which I got cheap, but usually goes for more than your budget. Also love my Roland RSP-550, especially for its ability to produce a chorus which works amazingly well on bass, kind of like a Dimension D. That cost me £60 on the bay. Also like the modulation stuff in my Dynacord DRP15 a lot. Just a few suggestions, millions of boxes to get mod fx from.

Note that the Diamond has an automatic electric -18dB pad that may come in handy if you connect a Line signal from a synth. If you open the box it can be disabled.
