Different genres and some of their iconic artists

Hey guys.

I'm basically a Noob to electronic music. I enjoy producing it in the studio, but don't really know much about it, further than Deadmau5, Skrillex and David Guetta

What are some of the different genres of electronic music and , in your opinion, some of the best artists out there?

Thanks!

Ok. So I had a chance to listen to at least one track from each artist.

So Far Luciano and Kraftwerk are my favorites!!

I hope not to offend you in any way, but the most difficult thing for me is having to listen to 10, 20 or even 30 minute tracks.

I know every art form is to be looked at within it's own art form point of view. For example, you can't judge Picasso's work by looking at it with a Van Gogh point of view. But I'm still having a hard time with Villalobos' 37 minute Fizheuer Zieheuer, for example.

What should I look for in this form of electronic music? I've realized that Villalobos is very into sound, and that's actually the thing I enjoy the most about his music: The way he makes it sound almost alive. But it still doesn't justify (in my opinion) a 37 minute track.

Even though my original question was about more mainstream and trendy kinds of electronic music, like the ones being direct inspiration to pop music producers today, I've still found your artist suggestions pretty cool and, in a way, it enchanted me to more ''vintage'' forms of Electronic Music.

I hope you can still reply with some of the more modern and ''mainstream'' artists.

Thanks a lot!!!!

Apparently max is asking for some inspirations for his own work. He said he likes what he listened so far but he has some problems with some of the tracks because they did not match his style (too long, too "overthought" or "intellectual" etc. - sometimes this happens to me also and Kraftwerk is not for everybody because of their oldschool sound).

I don´t want to sound rude but recommending him some trash does not seem very helpful to me. Anyway, I´m not a big fan of mainstream music and the artist he mentioned in his OP but I do not see any problems in recommending him some of the better stuff from the electronic underground. Maybe not mainstream enough but at least he has the chance listening to some outstanding artists.

If you like the sounds of Skrillex try some of the harder and darker Drum and Bass stuff like Noisia, Black Sun Empire or Calyx. Perhaps Depth Charge aka Jonathan Saul Kane could be interesting too (not quite sure but this is something that only you can decide).

If you like Kraftwerk but are looking for a more modern electro sound you should check out Drexciya (eg "Wavejumper") or AUX88 (eg "I Need To Freak").

If you are interested in House music watch "Pump Of The Volume" on youtube. An excellent documentary about the history of house music. It lasts only 1 hour but you will learn a lot.

Thanks a LOT for this reply .

I actually Am a very mainstream guided guy, and my dream, really, is to produce music for a lot of people to listen. But I obviously need better inspiration than just what mainstream artists offer.

Thanks for your help =)

Shpongle, Younger Brother, Hallucinogen... pretty much anything Simon Posford is involved in really.

Hallucinogen is goa trance... Shpongle and Younger Brother are a little harder to classify. Mixtures of goa, ambient, downtempo... good stuff all around though.

Just go to beatport & juno and listen and see what YOU like.
Theres thousands of titles on there and all it takes is some genuine interest and a little effort on your part.

Its pointless asking complete stangers to help influence your own musical direction.

Good luck

Two old school favorite genres that have a cool as f**k pure class vibe to me but require more patience than modern electronic, and some newer electro, which skrillex essentially came out of. Can't f**k with the original "walkman" (the Sebastian track below) to this day it kills everything.

Atmospheric drum & bass:

LTJ Bukem - LTJ Bukem - Suspended Space - YouTube
Seba - Seba - Valley Of The Moomins - YouTube
Big Bud - LTJ Bukem - Big Bud / Pure / State Of Mind - YouTube

Downtempo:

Kruder & Dorfmesiter - Kruder & Dorfmeister - Hifi Going Under [Main Version] - YouTube
Massive Attack - Massive Attack- Teardrop - YouTube
Thievery Corporation - Lebanese Blonde Thievery Corporation - YouTube

Electro:

SebastiAn - SebastiAn - Walkman - YouTube
Justice - Justice - Genesis - YouTube
Busy P - Busy P. - Rainbow Man By RealNeo - YouTube

Thanks for the blog suggestions.

My initial question was about guidance to some of the genres, not my musical tastes. I know what I'll like, and what I won't.

Thanks !
