Virus ti Ableton (Ive never been ITB before!)

I just want to sequence the virus using ableton. I have the ti vst installed and thats not the issue. I want the audio to come out of the virus hw outputs, WHY is this such a ballache?? Ive watched several videos but they dont deal with setting up the virus so I can just use the external hw outputs of the virus.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, Ive NEVER tried to use vsts before and previously I was using the virus as just a midi module with a midisport uno (with abelton). I want the convenience of the plugin for editing and management and automation but this routing audio to and fro in abelton is NOT fun at all.

Thanks to any helpful souls out there....

FWIW the demo song for virus in ableton works fine, plays etc but I cant play the keyboard and hear sounds, which as you can imagine is disappointing...

b/w this is why I cant be bothered to use a computer usually with music... no music gets made just researching preferences for routings and other B.S. until my motivation is completely drained...

ITB= PITA (for the uninitiated)

Ok, I have been trying to do this as an external instrument instead, but my version of live lite doesn't support external instruments so I suppose that I will be forced to do this routing in ableton.

Also, can I not automate the clips by just arming the track and twisting the knobs? Im seeing demos of people opeing arrange view and then assigning each param to be automated in its own lane... What a PITA. Can this really be? this just seems really far from a concose creative way of working, with the simple midi/usb hub these things were possible. Im reaching for a new level of control but it seems the TI is just giving me headaches.

ARRGH how can people work all ITB I doubt I will ever know...

I hear ya man.. The funny thing is you can only use one instance of the TI in VSTI mode I just use it like a regular synth via midi works for me.

Good luck

Set up an audio track alongside the viru track....arm it

Make sure you have the virus set to outputs not usb....to automate close the virus vst..then click on the virus track...in the bottom left there is a box thats the virus vst...cluck on the arrow on top of the box, it will expand...click configure then twist any knob on the hardware or software and itll come up and you can automate it

I use the TI in ableton three instances at a time using the usb outputs...i can automate pretty much anything and its really intuative...just hard to explain to someone who hasnt worked ITB..but trust me it works

Yup but from that one instance ypu can run three separate midi tracks...so essentially you can run three instances, not one

You can also layer all sixteen parts witthin these three tracks

Sorry to pedantic but that's slightly wrong.

You can only run the one VST plug but can have 16 midi channels although only output audio through three different stereo channels. If you want to run in mono you can obviously turn this into 6 mono outs.

You can have three tracks running from the one instance, so essentially its like having three instances...thats all i meant

Just to be clear you can only run one instance of the vst

I still disagree with your use of tracks?

You can have 16 separate 'instruments' playing 16 different (what I would call tracks) on 16 different midi channels all carrying their own automation. To me that's like having 16 instances albeit through 3 stereo outs.

In Virus Control for each part (4 total if it's a Snow, 16 total otherwise) there is an output field (it's in red in the attached pic).

By default it comes up as USB 1 L+R, simply select one one of the Out channels (1 for a Snow, 3 otherwise) instead. You can choose stereo or mono as you see fit.

Cool then we disagree

Id call it one instance, three stereo output tracks (six mono), 16 layers, lol

Do I have to assign the virus as a control surface (it isn't listed in the preferences choices)? I have the tracks set-up and the polar knobs themself control the patches but the keys don't play the notes... I have the tracks set to 'all-in' and I have tried many of the other selections for the midi in and I can't play notes on the keyboard, only draw them in and tweak the knobs... I didhave it woking for only a moment but I had to be recording to hear the keys?

So Im not alll the way there yet but its getting close... I have managed to make a few little tunes just penciling the notes in but eff that...
