Thanks for all the replies by the way, nice talking about this machine. | Yea, mostly perc sounds. And mostly drum samples, except for the BD, which i use the P-I machine quite a bit. But i have a few BD samples i made using Punch that i use in the MD. I've been experimenting with loops lately as well. When i had my last one, it was my main hub. Sequencer, drum machine, sampler, master clock.

All good, I mean this is not about comparing drum machines any way.
I just prefer the sound of the MD personally. Maybe ill change my mind in a few months but if you asked me today I would trade them.
But for now i have both and i like it that way |
I don't have a Tempest, too much $$ for me =o] But i lust for one like mad.

Sounds good. Yeah I am messing with loops allot lately also, mainly for fun and experimentation stuff.
It sounds capable at being a main sequencer from what I read.
I have not yet stepped into that, about half into the manual at the moment.
You make me think how I will feel about this and the tempest in a few months time.
I actually purchased the Tempest in the very early days. I spend quite a bit time on the Tempest.
May I ask you why you would trade the Tempest for MD? Again more curious then anything, I always like to ask these questions.
I always like to know why certain producers prefer some gear over other gear.

the sequencing on the tempest isnt the greatest, the sound the times i have tried it seemed off, i dont know what the deal way,
i would rather have a md controling a vermona drm, those sound much heavier then the tempest,

Also if the machindrum was manufactured in china not only would it be cheaper but it would probably be MORE reliable.

Hey Mr. Techno! Congrats on joining the Elektron flock...
I've been having a blast with mine, wish I had more time with it to really dig into it, but I've had it spitting out beats from the internal machines, along with samples, and MIDI triggers to my Virus TI2 kbd, and it all sounds heavenly. The P-lock capability is just immense - and there are other tricks I haven't even delved into yet (machines that can trigger other machines, LFOs being rerouted to other machines, not to mention I keep hearing about this CTR-AL machine).
For a first piece of Elektron kit, I think the MD is a huge win. I was also looking at the Tempest, but wasn't really into the sounds I kept seeing on YouTube demos. MD demos just clicked with me, as I'm mostly going to be using this for electronic noodling. But... if the need arises for some more authentic acoustic drum sounds well, I'll just ring my brother up and sample some of his real drums.
Looking forward to hearing what you come up with! I'll try posting some stuff as soon as I get more of a handle on my process.

Of course, i may end up not liking it at all, but i'd like to find out! Obviously, i'd like to have BOTH, but that's not a option |

Sooooo much fun | I must try that, haven't went near that side of mine, just got my studio up n running after a 2 year hiatus and its the first time I've integrated the MD in my setup.
Can anyone recommend some techno/electro samplebanks/sample sites with good quality one-shot samples (not loops)??
I'd appreciate it.

I would sign up to the Elektron forum and have a look in their download section.

Yeah this is also my first bit of Elektron kit and I am now tempted to look at the other range of gear. It's funny because all I wanted was a simple drum machine for some new sounds, now after 2 weeks I feel I can almost create full tracks on this thing, still trying to get my bass cuts right. Have not yet had much success with creating nice bass sounds.
Stabs and percussion have been a major win for me, also creating crazy ambience sounds.
Have not yet messed with the sample stuff, just placing my focus on the synth side and see what new sounds I can create. Have made some fat sounding kicks and killer sounding snares.
Love the FX selection also, lets see if we can post some audio examples over the next few months.

My experience with the Tempest has been a great one, to begin with I was unsure of its sound, and even today I am still a little unsure.
It does excel in glitch style sounds, also I have made some crazy bass sounds and stabs on it. Percussion sounds I have not had any success with, except glitch style sounds.
Its groove by Mr Linn certainly hits the spot. Sequencer the best I have ever used. I just wish the MD had a visual sequencer like this.
However after comparing the sound side by side with the MD over the past few days, I just find the percussion sounds on the MD to be stronger, sharper and more defined. In particular the kicks. There is a certains smoothness to the MD percussion which the Tempest lacks.
Whilst I do not need more reverb, delay and other FX it is great to see the MD have included theses FX onboard the machine. I just find it is handy to have FX like this on a drum machine sequencer as it opens the door to more creativity quickly.
It's nice to see how your new snare patch sounds with a little reverb splashed on top.
In regards to the Elektron user community I actually downloaded the sounds these cats have created, and I must admit I was not all that impressed.
Most sound really muddy and lack definition. Also they are way to distorted, sounding.
Anyway nothing better then creating your own sounds I think.
The MD and the Tempest are not preset surfing machines, they both require allot of time to get in deep and create your own sounds. |
