RME Fireface UCX

Hey everybody,

After six years (that's right, SIX) of using this:

yesterday I purchased this!:

Right after I hit 'submit' I will be installing it so that when I return from work today I will be able to jump right in and rock out all night.

So, obviously this is a rather extreme jump in quality from where I was, so my excitement level is the highest it's EVER been when it comes to purchasing any piece of gear. I'm through the roof man.

I'm curious who in the electronic music world is using one? And/or what are your thoughts and experiences with this nifty little box?

frank

I love it. Love it. Totalmix is so confusing but there is nothing it can't do!

Enjoy it and become very familiar with the latency free monitoring fx. Sometimes I actually put them in the recording chain.

ONLY complaint is the midi cable and the remote cable wont sit as solidly as they should in their ports. The power cable too. The preamps in it sound great, and I havent had any clock issues with an ADA8000. Try it with an iPad!

How are the effects (reverb, delay) sound on these? Are they easy to add to tracks and then record into the chain?

I'm thinking of this as a kind of audio interface and mixer all in one, with a potential for mixing away from the computer.

I got mine just last week, so take my comments with a pinch of honeymoon-related salt.

My other interfaces are a Steinberg MR816X and my old, but trusty, first-gen ULN-2. Due to a downsizing of my home studio I had to get rid of the MR816X purely because of it´s physical size, and the ULN-2 just doesn´t have enough channels for my current workflow.

My first impressions of the UCX are very good. It´s really small. It feels heavy and solid. It´s been amazingly stable at low buffer sizes so far. The pres are nice and clean, but not as good as the ULN-2 (subjectively speaking). Sonically the UCX is, to my ears, super clean, and possibly a bit brighter than the ULN-2. All round I actually think I prefer this to my ULN-2..

Hey everybody,

So sadly I haven't been able to use this as much as I would have liked over the last few days due to work, but I have messed around a little.

I have encountered 2 blue screens of death. That was a few days ago, it could very well be my computer (I'm running a 4 year old Dell XPS), but I just thought I'd mention this. I haven't experienced it over the last 2 days. I also have not updated the firmware for PC. So the blue screen could be for any number of reasons. I'm not blaming the unit.

The sound quality on this thing is awesome. I instantly could hear a MAJOR difference in my monitoring. My room kind of sucks, but in my AKG 402's the clarity is absolutely outstanding. I'm blown away. The detail in all frequency ranges is so distinctive, it makes eq'ing so much easier for me. Also, this thing gets loud. Very happy with that.

That said, I agree that Total Mix is very convoluted, but I haven't read the manual yet, so I'm sure I'll be able to wrap my head around it. No fault on anyone but me on that front.

Also as mentioned in another post, I am very disappointed with how the remote control connects to the back of the unit. It doesn't sit solidly and kind of hangs on an angle. For the cost of the unit, this to me is a major oversight. Honestly, in my opinion this is something that could have been easily avoided, but anyways. Aside from that, I love that the control wire is VERY sturdy and long, which makes volume control EXTREMELY convenient for my setup.

Instantly my analogs sound so much better. My recordings are better. I'm very happy with this unit so far. Will post more as I get more acquainted.
