to me,, what you have is what is important. Lusting after something else instead of rolling with what you have is a bad plan...

Put your car on the track and race with it.....

take red ..yellow, and torquise......make a great painting.

this is true... I am actually pretty excited to own what I do, and I don't feel bad about not having a CS-80. it's not stopping me from writing good music. of course I want more though!

JD-800's and Virus B's are so cheap right now everyone should own one.

Time proven top 3 most used here:

Analogues
Jupiter 8
Jomox Sunsyn
Andromeda

Digital or hybrid
Kurzweil 2661
PPG Wave 2.3
Access Virus TI

Above is my working setup that covers 90% of all needs, although further dozen of synths wait to jump in when necessary.

From what I have/had:

- Roland JD-990
- Arp Odyssey MKI
- Roland Juno 60

Quite a reasonable setup imo.
A nice poly, a great digital/rompler and one of the most flexible mono ever.
Give me that, a Mackie 1202, a DP4 and a 707 and I rule the world.
Well... my world!

I can do everything I want/need using the following 3 synthesizers:

Alesis Andromeda
Waldorf Q/32
Korg Z1/18

In fact, the first two would be just enough ...

Monkey..I wonder if having fewer choices facilitates more focus and forces you to extract more sophisticated results from what you have?

I have so much stuff right now, and with some of it, I haven't even scratched the surface, haven't become intimate with what it's all about. I'm sure some people spend hours with a Virus C.. I love the thing, but if it was all that I had,, I'd end up knowing it like the back of my hand.

Of course, what we WANT vs. what we NEED are two completely different things. But with these 3 you can do pretty much what any pro can do.

Changing my mind here... My three would be upgrades of three synths I already have...

1). Upgrade to Virus TI 2 Keyboard (from TI 1 Polar)

2). Upgrade to Yamaha Motif XF7 (from MOX6)

3). Upgrade to Roland Jupiter-80 (from Jupiter-50)

I could see replacing the Prophet 5 with some other analog poly. Sound-wise I'd probably choose the Voyetra 8 but the interface might drive me batty if it was my only analog poly. You couldn't really go wrong with Prophet 5/Jupiter 8/Andromeda/OB-Xwhatever/Xpander for that role.
If I could only have 3 synths I figure that means one analog mono, one analog poly, and one digital to have the kind of sound palette I'd want.

So of what I have (as well as what is currently available right now), I'm sticking with:

ARP 2600
Prophet 5
John Bowen Solaris

However, if price is no object and you can include unreleased synths, I'd probably go:

MacBeth Inferno
Schmidt 8-voice
John Bowen Solaris

Which (considering all the vintage synths I have) is amazing that I'd pick three modern synths. Truly a synth renaissance right now.

I am going to have to go with:

PC3K8
Code 8 (loaded)
DSI Prophet 12

That should cover all of the bases

I could spend a lifetime with my current big three:

- Mid-sized Dotcom/MU-format modular (yeah, I know the rules said no modulars, but that's what I use).
- Nord G2 expanded
- Machinedrum UW

I have other stuff but to some extent it's redundant with the three above.

OP-1
Octatrack - technically a sampler, but can act as a synth
EWI 4000S

Though if I can't have the OT, then:

OP-1
Virus TI2
EWI 4000S
