some first impressions from the first (retail) unit.
really well built. solid frame, quality knobs and switches. feels good.
clear attractive design. the face plate has a little sparkle in it. very nice.
the sound?
it just sounds right. not a bad sound out of it so far.
nice fast envelopes. musical oscs & filter.
functionally, deeper than it looks. lots of delving to be done.
lots of tempting ins and outs - just been using the main CV in and Main audio out so far, not yet tried the 3 individual VCO CV ins or osc outs. ken gave me a taster of sequencing the oscillators individually via the separate CV ins. holy crap, it makes a lot of noise for a little unit.
in short? instant classic. |

I needed a small controller keyboard to go in front of my computer; I got fed up with reaching behind me for a keyboard when programming plugins.
I bought this one, which seemed the best out of those in the shop:

If you're able to solder at all, the regulators are really easy to replace. I'll have a blog post up in a bit, but the regulators themselves are the five bolted down packages in this photo:
While you're in there, replacing the battery is a very good idea. I installed a proper battery holder:

Pete | Excellent advice. I actually recapped the power supply a while back and that cured a random reboot problem. I should do the regulators as well. It seems that most of my problems have been power related...

its been AGES since I was able to post in one of these threads!
so I've decided to spluge this month on some tax deductable "tools"
first up, since the headphone output on my Zoom H4n is dying (made that poor thing bend over backwards & it finally gave in to some harsh conditions on a shoot on the moores), ive decided to finally get myself a proper location recorder, for use on the location film work I do as a recordist. so first up, a Tascam DR-680
from there I needed a new hardcase to house it all in (DR680, H4n, NTG2, Headphones, 3x EW500 transmiter + recivers, 3x ME2, wires)
& lastly, I'm looking to pick up a Mackie Control Universal. I've been using a Behringer BCF2000 in MCU emu mode for the last 5+ years (& its served very well for the price) but I'm sick of having to remember all the shift keys, having the screen emulator disjointed from the hardware, & really want some touch-faders! I'm schedulled to spend the rest of the winter hulled up in the studio work post on an indie feature, so having a proper layout wiill be a real boon! touch-sensative automation yo!
that lot should do me until next year, when I'll pick up some more radio mic's, & possibly an electic cello! |

Never listen to opinions regarding gear. For every 50 nobodies on Gearslutz that say a piece of gear doesn't sound good enough to cut it, I know at least one somebody who is cutting it in NYC with that piece of gear. ... www.diehipster.com |

Just picked up an OB-8 about two days ago! It's really blowing me away.
Here's it on a stand below my D-50. The D-50's old, though. Bought that in '89 new. I can't get over how big the OB-8 is. Both the sound and the size of the board!
Attached a quick soundfile I made after about a half hour of owning it - the title theme from the movie, "Terminator". Three tracks, no processing, EQ, Reverb, Compression, etc. Just played straight into my converter. Track 1 is a simple sawtooth bass, Track 2 is brass with an opening filter for the chords and Track 3 is the lead which is a pulse wave on unison with some portamento. All panning is from the voices in the OB-8. Can't get over the raw sound!
And yes, that's the songbook for the Buffy the Vampire's "Once More with Feeling" episode on my piano! I'm a big Buffy fan.
Regards,
Frank

Sounds amazing. Congrats on a truly great purchase.
Heck, I'd be happy with just the D50

It's my second one. I kicked myself for selling it the first time. Ballsy, versatile monosynth. I love it to pieces <3
