Totally inspired

The weirdest thing has happened since getting the Minitaur.

Over the last few days I've been "On a mission"

For some reason the Minitaur has made me get all creative and go back to basics and have fun.

Ive been firing it through pedals guitar amps,fx and out then back in,throwing multiband gates side chained from drum loops and all sorts.

But its also made me go right back to basics with things like Omnisphere. Hitting INIT patch and starting from scratch. Watching the proper tutorials on the filters and envelopes epecially the mod envelopes

Especially great is it made me properly map my impulse keyboard via automap to Omnisphere to have proper hands on control which has made a HUGE difference.

Its made me realise how much having knobs and spending more time on understanding how sound is made and then pushing it as far as you can is so hard to do quickly with a mouse and VSTS.

Ive had loads of synths over the years but its like the simplicity of the moog has made me open my eyes properly and given me an understanding of synthesis. Its not like i didn't know what i was doing its more i was doing it without taking proper notice and having a half understanding of what i was doing.

It is a bit of a 1 trick pony, it is buggy with its USB on (my) system, but it sounds awesome and is so much fun to twiddle. If it broke tomorrow and was a door stop its the best £400 ive spent just for one of those very elusive dont happen very often DING DONG moments.

I also wish id not sold everything so much now, but as they say "you need to go there to come back".

Now to look at going modular on GOOGLE

Same thing happened to me. I dont know if its the one knob per function or what, but it is a very inspiring synth in it's simplicity.

You can do a lot more than bass with it, I've been using it for a lot of mid range stuff and arps and such in addition to bass. Works well for a lot of those things. Thinking of picking up a CP-251 for it to expand its capabilities a bit and give me a little "taste" of modularity.

Careful, now...

I did almost the same thing. Still have my 2 modular systems configured in Excel, but I'm following Reptil's advice and sitting on it for a few months before committing. Still torn between 6U of Eurorack and just going fully 5U DotCom. Eurorack is tiny and has lots of options, but the Sound of 5U is more about what I'm after. Best to sit and wait...

I as kidding actually (sort of)

Im all over Omnisphere at the moment now Ive got it sussed. Making the most amazing pulsating rhythmic pads.

I really dig stuff like Guy J. I love the weird hypnotic pads and sounds he has evolving through his tracks and thats exactly what I'm getting back out of Omnisphere using all the mod envelopes and stuff, utterly amazing and great fun.

Adding a touch of ubermod and using alloy 2 mutiband dynamics on the gate modes to further add groove is mental

ah the fun of it all

My modulars are virtual, sadly. I'm still insane enough to be pondering how I can save up $15,000 for this:

Synthesizers.com

Just not in the "crashing tidal wave of electronics" case configuration. And with my choice of modules. And like a total geek, I downloaded the synth builder, and poke and tweak my ideal setup every few weeks...

Electronic music has to be some kind of madness, I swear. But, such a WUNNERFUL madness! I laugh my evil laugh...

You could just start with the DotCom Entry Level System. Its about $1700 all total and you can even just pay off each module once per month for a year if you don't want to buy it all at once. TBH, that's been one of the ways I have been considering going for a while now. If I go 5U that's probably what I'll do.

Besides with modular, you're getting mostly just one piece at a time. A system like you posted would likely be built up over a period of time rather than purchased all at once.

if you build a modular slowly you will probably have a better understand of what everything does.

On the above two suggestions...

You're right that I can buy a basic 22 unit case and stick in enough modules to replicate a Little Phatty or something, and build from there. But I'm kind of there already. Sort of. So I'd rather start off with something more ambitious, like the 44 unit guy, which is... around $6,000. I might be able to swing that in the upcoming year. Maybe.

As for what all those crazy modules do, I'm mostly up on that too. I understand what the Dotcom stuff does, and most of the crazy Eurorack format guys. Now, knowing what to do musically with those kinds of manglers, that's another story.

i havent posted much here in the yrs ive been registered... but i preach this all the time, on every forum ive been a part of... knobs n sliders are much more fun than flippin thru menus.. u can actually tailor the sound ur lookin for, and not have that "preset" sound that everyone else is using.. seems like it goes on deaf ears, until a person actually has a "hands on" experience.. welcome aboard! lol
