Anyone knows how this can be done?

Hey guys,
Here is the link to anyone interested:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ru3up...e_gdata_player
To me it sounds like it's scanning a loop going from fast to slow to fast again(starts with a rapid snare, going to repeating other longer portions of the loop, then off to small chunks again).Sounds like it's speeding down but my belief is that is done by granular scanning of some sort but may be wrong(the mirroring delay confuses me a bit).Considering it was done circa 2001 how could one achieve this back then(perhaps a hardware sampler algorithm?) & how would one pull this off today? As always thank you for your time!

EDIT:Damn I forgot to mention WHEN it kicks in!It's that bit on 2:27-2:34.

You mean the bit at 1:34?

2001 wasn't really that long ago was it (am I that old?). I mean sampling to a computer and editing (although with limited by memory) has been possible since the late 80's if that's what it takes...

No idea personally how it's done, but I'll bump for one of my fav. bands

I started getting into digital audio/synths around that time but my experience was more around Re-Birth/Reason than editing & the only synth I had was a 303.I knew nothing about editing audio let alone how a hardware sampler worked(apart from an SP-303 sampler i got some time later, that is far from getting complex things going).

Yes, the sound mangling on 1:34 has the same philosophy but at 2:24 it takes off nicely. Was computer software able to pull it off back then?I really know nothing about computers of that era other than you felt like a king for having a 20GHz hard drive!!My impression was that it was a sampler's work but i can be mistaken.

Definitely one of my favorite bands since 1995 too M.O!!I always keep coming back to them for inspirational creativity.Leeb's basses have scarred me for good.Thank you for stopping by...!

Explore the stereo part of this effect. I think a lot of that effect (very cool) is the extreme automated panning. If you pan that hard and fast, you are essentially splitting your left and right channels into little chopped up pieces anyway. See how close that gets you.

Sounds like a simple hihat roll followed by another sound run thru a delay thats timing is being automated or maybe just a time stretcher.

I isolated the 2 channels so i can have a clear view as to what's going on.
There are no stretchers involved. It's a grain-like scanning of the loop as initially thought going from ultra-fast stutter to small segments(comprising of 2 hits the most), then fast again. It's not a delay on the side either(or so i think).Sounds like it's programmed too.

What I need to know is if there is a stutter-like program/application that lets the user decide how long i can scan a snare for instance, before moving on to a different portion/sound.So far all i've come across are quite abstract & unpredictable as to which part of the loop will get affected next.

There's always the option of manual editing too but i'm just wondering...

Geist allows you to do per-step: repeats of a sample (from 2 all the way to buzz), reverse a sample, down pitch it, as well as add effect chains and re-sample "onboard." It is manual editing made as fast as possible. It can definitely do what they did in that FLA song if a glitch or stutter plug-in -- like stutter-edit -- is too random for you.

[Thankfully the forum parameters were changed so you can now write stutter.]

I think you could make something like that on the octatrack by animating start point and length of a sample (lock them to the fader), not sure it's granular enough though.

Otherwise I can always throw out the catch-all 'yeah, can probably be done in NI Reaktor'

I listened alot to FLA back in the day, up until 'caustic grip' which I really still don't really gel with then I got into other stuff. I recently 're-deiscovered' them and the last couple of albums I like.

I guess I have to give Geist a try, thank you for this!9 times out of 10 i prefer manual editing so this sounds like the next best thing for me.

What was so politically incorrect about the word "stutter"?

Yeah, programming start points can give similar results, didn't think of that in the first place.

Reaktor...Jack of all trades but i belong to those who think it's frustrating for its own good & always felt it's getting on my way.Might re-discover it one day though, definitely not closing all doors just yet...

When it comes to Frontline i give the impression that i'm one of those fans that accept every single fart they output. However i really, really love the way they do music. It feels like their music stands out better than your average EDM/EBM band.My humble opinion, that is...

BT wrote a plugin called BreakTweaker (at least that was the developer name) that could probably do this...

But you can do this effect (and I'd bet that they used one on this particular track) easily with a granulator. KTGranulator is a free VST that does this and I'm sure there are other more robust plugs around.

There's actually a Reaktor ensemble that's been around since the early '00s which combines a step sequencer with a granular synth into which you can easily load your own samples. The name escapes me at present but each step features independent settings for pitch, granulation and playback speed.

It's now called stutter edit and iZotope bought the rights to it.
