Cubase 6 midi help for two hardware synths

hey guys i was just after some help from someone knowledgeable.

i have a copy of cubase 6 and i am a bit in the dark about how to set up my two synths together. i have a mono evolver keyboard and a nord rack 2x to run to my focusrite safire pro 24. i am assuming that the evolver's keyboard can be used to trigger the nord and have both synths able to received midi from cubase. currently i don't know what channel settings in cubase and the synths are going to work nor do i know which midi modes to use. at the moment cubase isn't receiving any midi.

cheers

How is the midi all connected? What interface are you using?

nord midi out > safire pro midi in
safire midi out > evolver midi in

Safire Pro only has 1 in 1 out, so I suggest setting up like this:

Evolver midi out > Safire Midi In
Safire Midi Out > Evolver Midi In
Evolver Midi Thru > Nord Midi In.

You're going to want to have the Evolver on Midi Channel 1 and the Nord on Midi Channel 2.
Setup these up this way in Cubase Midi connections.
On a Midi track in Cubase, your In is always going to be set to Evolver
and you can then select either instrument on an out, the evolver will control both this way.

The downside to this setup is the Nord's knob movements won't be recordable in Cubase, but i'm sure you can set up the evolver's knobs to control the nord. I recommend getting a Midi interface with more than 1 in 1 out.

mind as well just get a 2x2 usb midi interface, that way both the Evolver and Nord can have dedicated ins and outs. That way you can have the Evolver controlling both instruments and be able to record knob movements etc. from either instrument.

honestly, midi interfaces aren't all that special and there's not too many options out there anymore. Just get a m-audio midisport, you can even just get a 1x1 since you already have 1x1 on your safire. Cubase will see both and route between them. If you're going to expand to a bigger setup, than I'd suggest something more robust like a MOTU, but for a 1x1 or a 2x2 a m-audio should do fine.
