How to make Battery and External Synths Play Nice Together?

I use Battery 2 for all of my drums, and while I love it in so many ways, it's kind of been driving me crazy lately.

Specifically, its getting it to sync with external synths.

For example, I'll have Battery playing all of my drums, but when I try to add a bassline with my SH-101, the timing is off. It's makes its very hard to get a groove going when the bass is constantly lagging behind the drums.

I'm thinking that my problem might be due to latency?

I'm using a pair of MOTU UltraLites with latency of 128 samples. When I try to go below that, I get pops and crackles.

Any suggestions how to deal with this problem? Would ditching the UltraLite's and getting a PCIe audio interface allow me to get lower latency? If so, how much lower and which interface(s) would you recommend?

Here's my current setup:

- E8500 3.16 Ghz with 4 GB of RAM running Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
- MOTU Ultralite (X 2)
- Cubase 5
- Battery 2
- Waves Gold Bundle
- Various outboard synths including SH-101 & Omega 8
