External Sequencer with Korg Electribe - Can still record motion sequence?

On a Korg Electribe EMX, if you control the notes themselves for all the parts from an external multi-channel MIDI sequencer, is it still possible to record motion sequences directly on the EMX itself, so that the source of the note messages and controller messages are the two different devices?

If anyone has an Electribe, I'd like to know. Basically, it means you have a bunch of motion sequences recorded on the EMX, but the EMX doesn't have the note on/off messages stored as part of the pattern, thus by itself the motion sequences would be doing nothing, as there is no sound or notes. But the external sequencer triggers these notes, so the motion sequences are then tweaking the sequenced notes in real time.

seeing as the elkectribe itself doesn't record velocity data...great shame..

i use mine as an external module in to my sequencer...the only thing is you need to set up a pattern for the sounds associated with your external sequencer really...and you could have just an empty pattern lopping that contains your sound setup for drums and synths..everything else could be done in an external sequencer/d.a.w.

see the manul here page 79

Thanks, I've read the manual, but I want to know is if it is possible for the motion sequencing to still be done on the electribe itself, even if the notes are triggered from an external sequencer?

I had two ESX's for ages, so I think I can answer this. Short of it is yes you can use the motion sequences without notes in the pattern. You just won't hear them unless you're sending notes in.

If you are talking about using motion sequences to automate parameters on external gear (or software) it gets a little trickier, since it will all be NPRN data, not midi continuous controllers. So you'd have to use something to translate it to CCs.

That's awesome, I'd love 2 ESX's. Did you enjoy them (I take it you did)? I've been on the fence between the EMX and ESX but I suspect I will get more from the ESX. I assume that you can switch between two patterns easily and without delay, even if those two patterns have entirely different samples loaded and assigned to the parts? In other words the ESX is loading all the samples available for other patterns even if you are not currently working with them, to allow for quick switching between them?

You can automate Electribe parameters using NRPNs but you have to reset it after each time you load your daw. At least in Cubase you have to.
