Percussive sound in Goodwill & Sling - Take You Higher

There's a song called "Take You Higher" by Goodwill & Sling, and I'm curious about a percussive sound they have it in.

It occurs first at ~0:54 seconds, when the bigger part of the track kicks in. I'm not sure what the name of this rhythm actually is (I think a sextuplet), when you have six notes in the time of four beats.

Anyway, what is the percussion sound going on here? Sounds like a weird verb'd out snare or hit of some sort... I'm hearing it more and more nowadays.

Thanks!
