It can get similar tones when using the Low Pass filter, but unlike the Roland filters, this doesn't lose low end or volume when turning the resonance up. It has nice tight portamento like the 101 does, and the envelopes are nice and snappy. It has more sound creating possibilities over the 101, but the 101 has that damn sequencer =o]

Lack of firewire on new laptops forced me to look into a USB interface. There aren't as many choices out there compared to firewire interfaces. The Phonic Firefly 808 Universal was the best fit as far as specs were concerned. I had one of their Helix boards that worked very well, so I'm taking the Firefly for a spin.

Got my sweet rackmount sliding tray. Drum machine to the left; keyboard on the right. I'm set.
Need to pivot a drum machine the size of an 808 to slide it back in however, but that's ok.

No no no... You are suppose to say that it doesn't come close to sounding like an sh-101. I have an sh-101 and don't plan on getting a minibrute, so that is what I want to hear.
Sort of. I'm a bit overwhelmed with options to be honest lol. Whenever I think I know what I want I discover a new set of modules which leads to a wild goose chase.
I know I want to explore new sonic territory, something I can't easily get with my fixed keyboard synths.
I've recently become fascinated with east coast synthesis (wiard, make noise, etc "buchla" style). I want to learn more about it but it's hard as there doesn't seem to be much info available online (other than module manuals). I've read the Aalto manual and have been playing around making patches with that as preparation lol.
I will most likely buy a module this week simply to be able to test the new case. Still not sure which module but I've narrowed it down to a handful.. I'll post back here when I get it.
@krushing: always found the acidlab stuff looked cool & well made. How is it soundwise? How is the sequencer to handle (the unit you pictured is a V1, correct?)?
Still on its way to me from Klaus. It's the V3 version (V1 doesn't have the white/black keys & it's smaller overall), I'll try and remember to post some initial impressions once it's in my hands. Probably Thursday or so...

The sequencer on the Acidlab is very good, much better than a X0xb0x in my opinion. X0xb0x sounds better though. Or at least sounds better than the Acidlab Bassline 2 I had, no idea what 3 sounds like.

Hey MinoCan, just out of curiosity, why an AV instead of a simpler, cheaper XT or Express 128? Same number of ports afair
I can answer that, from my POV (I just bought the same machine)
I found this one cheaper than the newer Midi Express 128 (which is a stripped version of the MTP AV).

Hmm...I know nothing about interfaces, so I need help here.
I was considering the Steinberg UR824 because it's pretty well regarded here, but I looked up this Phonic thing and it's like half the price - that's why I'm suspicious.

I understand, I checked it out thoroughly. There's a long thread over at HC about it that is pretty positive. However, HC has been down for at least a day, at least from my office. Also, the Phonic reps are in that thread answering questions. Mostof the negative comments I've seen come from people who don't own the interface and haven't tried it.
I might have passed it by were it not for my positive experience with the Phonic Helix 18 board that I used to own. It was a great product that was also relatively inexpensive. I looked at the Steinberg, the Presonus, and the M-Audio products before going with the Firefly.
**** edit **** HC is back up, and here is the link:

Yes it must be like a child in a sweets shop (that is the part I envy you for) but then you need to make hard decisions (that is the part where I always fail).
But I agree I would also go for the weird stuff. I know that with the right modules you will aparently get the best sound...but to be honest, with all those nice synths...I would not be looking for "better sound quality" in the first place...but rather for something "special"...

I had the exact same experience. I found mine quite cheap on the Muff's BST board.
I think I'm destined to own nothing but Ensoniq gear. This is the second TS10 I've picked up for pocket change. The first cost $30 and was traded for a Little Phatty a few months back. This one came in a bundle with a some other random gear which will be sold (TR505, RA50, amp, speakers, mixer...). It's been in its case in a closet since 1993. I said to the guy selling it, "wow, this keyboard feels new!" He replied, "It should, it probably only has 5 hours of playing time on it. My father bought all this stuff new, tried it out for a few weeks and it went into storage."
Who spends nearly $4000 on whim hobby? Because that's about what this collection would've cost new. People are nuts. Those stickers came right off, to my great relief.
About USB mode - only six inputs / outputs seem to be enabled, and you need to use FireWire to use all eight, according to the first page.
I really need eight inputs, so I can record a DMX with its eight outputs.
Take a look at posts 48 and 52 in the thread. Anderton clearly states that he was able to use all 8 inputs at 96kz over USB. While the number of outputs isn't mentioned, I would assume that all 8 would work.

Serves me right for not reading the entire thread.
Looks like I'm getting this instead of the Steinberg.

I doubled back and re-read it after your post to make sure. I just got it and haven't tried to max it out, but I will definitely do so this weekend. My initial impression is very positive, with the exception of the pots being attached to the board and not secured to the case. The unit looks very functional rather than sexy and seems to be very solid.
