By the time synths reach the post production phase of a composition they all sound the same anyways lol

I just got a TI Snow and I am feeling the exact same. First hardware synth for me in over ten years. I am totally blown away.

Congrats!

You WILL like it! No doubt.

Keeping in the spirit of the thread...here is the first thing I did with my Snow.... last night as a matter of fact.

Little bit of 80's pop / disco / crap. You can hear that the Virus is not just a Trance machine. Very versatile.

Everything other than the drums in this is Virus. No external FX.

Maybe so...but you make cooler drunk purchases than I do. I think the last thing I drunkbought was a pocket knife lol.

I agonized over buying the Virus for over a year.

Not because of the sound...I just was unsure if the TI function would work in my setup. Luckily I have had no problems so far....and it makes a cool little interface.

You run one instance of the Virus Control VST/AU...and you set that up as a multi-instrument. (4 parts are available on the Snow, 16 parts on the TI / TI2)

The track I did above...I sequenced four separate parts using the multi-setup in the VC. Then, when it sounded like I wanted....I just recorded each of the parts to audio. It was done in Logic.

I did that track sort of as a test to see how the Virus would respond in this kind of a setup...or if I would run into problems.

I think I might have another scratch track I was fooling around with....will upload.

OK here is another short sequence. Nothing special.

I was primarily testing out how well the Virus arpeggiators would sync up so it's just a three chord progression looped and various parts being brought in / out.

Same drumbeat as above....all other sounds from the Virus.

Cheers

and finally....

Because I am a geek and an 80's throwback....here is the first patch I programmed on the Virus.

The intro/arpeggio from Duran Duran's "Save a Prayer". Complete with mod wheel controlled portamento on the outro. I think it sounds pretty close.

I think it all depends on your workflow, existing equipment, and what kind of sound you were after.

I had a Virus C desktop when they first came out. Overall I liked it "OK", but what I did not care for was the hoops you had to jump through to program it, set up multi's, patch management, etc. I don't care for 'Page Diving' on a hardware synth. It sat unused and I sold it.

If you like hands on control and building your own sounds, I would go with the Nord...no question. I think it would be much more immediate. Especially if you have an external FX processor you can pair with it or you have good FX chains already setup in your DAW of choice.

That being said. If you have to have the Virus sound...get a Virus. It is sometimes hard to replicate some of the sounds that a Virus does easily.

HOWEVER.... If you already work with softsynths...I would recommend saving up more and getting a used Snow or some variation of TI. The TI has a much wider sound palette and I personally do not think a TI sounds similar to a C (or any of the previous generations). YMMV.

Best of luck

I have Komplete 7 so I have a ton of quality soft synths... it's just they are so uninspiring. I hate using the mouse to turn dials and drag faders. I also have a Slim Phatty... I love it because it's hands on. I am in need of a poly synth... it'll have to be a VA cus my budget is no more than $800.

The TI puts me off cus it relies mostly on its software. I want more hands on. I think I'm going to go with the Nord since you say the C is a pain to create patches with. What kind of effect plugins would you recommend for the Nord?

I recommend Valhalla Room for reverb and a good programmable delay plug (which DAW are you using?)

Also set up a distortion / saturation plug. I use Logic and Reason's built in stuff mostly.

For me...about 90% of the effects I use are either reverb or delay...sometimes with a bit of distortion at the source to add grit. Nothing too fancy.

Dont go for a Nord Lead. Nords are good for piano/keyboard sounds, not synths.

Congrats !!

Actually I have a question for you TI users
I can,t for the life of me get my TI to
transmit program changes over MIDI

I,ve tried everything, prog change enable is active
have never been able to get the TI to change patches on other synths

Any suggestions?
